Just bought mine. New 17 MBP.

What's really weird is this:

I've never bought a stock Mac; there has always been something I wanted to upgrade or customize.

Not with the new MBP 17". It's exactly what I want. (of course, a better GPU would have been nice, but I really don't care that much since the x1600 will do just fine.)

Quick question since you work at a store and might know this. Will the stores be discounting their current stock of the old line of MBPs and if so how much? Looking at the great deal for the refurbs (1449 for base 2ghz) and I'm wondering what the stores are going to do with their remaining stock. Thanks!

Well I would guess that the units on the floor will become sale items (usually on a seperate table somewhat hidden around genius bar) (thats how it is in my store) but many may just go back to Apple!

You would not believe how many Shuffles my store has!!! and some old Nanos, old this old that etc. This probably mean that they will either sell those items through their online refurb store or sell them off to a third-party distributor.

As to whether you will be seeing any 1449 for base model of the old line... I would say forget it! Thats a STEEP discount but maybe online you could find one for that price. Keep in mind that the longer you wait on those (now old) MBPs the cheaper they will become on Apples online refurb store. Same goes with retail, the longer a product is on (or under) that table the cheaper it gets (to a point).

So of course i am one of the impatient users that needed a Macbook and could not wait any longer. I purchased mine Last Tuesday, exactly a week ago, Should I return it and pay the $130 restocking fee because the new Macbook's should be right around the corner or just keep what I have and be happy with it?

If you can wait... I would consider it. Not saying yes but if it were me then I would at least think about it some because the C2D is a much bigger improvement then what some people in this thread have been making it out to be.

Again just think about it. And read as many rumor pages as you can. Not to say they are always right but they MAY give you an idea...

The iMac is an awesome machine. Both in value and performance.

I sell more iMacs then I do any other Mac. Odd I know. Would have thought the MacBook right?

SOME people like the idea of having the 24inch iMac in their bedroom with wireless internet and printing and keyboard and mouse and front row... you can already (with little effort or extra money) turn it into a media center (sort of)

I'd be getting a 20", for cost reasons, and that the 20" is great. :) I'm not in a dorm room or anything so it's good. I just can't wait to get off windows. Waiting 5 minutes to open Firefox (I'm not joking) is unbearable.

So yes, your do need another physical drive besides the main system drive.

Or simply split your drive into multiple partitions or logical drives. Where's the problem?

That IS cool. 2GB RAM, 160GB Drive, 256MB video... For me, I wish this were a standard 15" configuration that would be available in the stores...but BTO is not that long of a wait.

Congrats on your 17: MBP!!! :D

What a surprise to wake up to.

I called Apple for my 3rd repair, and then they opted to replace it. I was expecting to hear "2.16gHz, 256M video card"... but then the specialist said "since you have the 256 card, we'll give the 2.33gHz Core 2 Duo with 256MB" and i was just absolutely speechless, and i covered my mouth to try not to sound so excited. So yeah... Fed-Ex is gonna e-mail me my shipping labels, and next week I'll have my new Core 2 Duo=). Let's hope it gets here soon, mid-terms are around the corner.

That's a fine solution for rolling back to a previous point in time as long as the physical disk does not crash. I'd still want a backup to a different piece of media.

So....is this Rev B MBP?

I can't buy anything till mid Spring, but all I wanna know is if this is REV B so I don't have to worry about the mooo, or the whine, or the heat, or the thermal paste, and all the other crazy things I've read on MR for the past 6 months....

Hope the Macbook gets an upgrade by April....

For those saying the Glossy screen is standard on the 17" on the online configerur, they must have fixed it because the default now is the regular matte screen.

BTW: I Just say this graph on Gizmodo.

I am anxiously awaiting it's arrival in stores.. I'm going out of town on the 3rd for over a week so I figure if I ordered it online, it wouldn't get here until after the 3rd.. maybe I can buy it while I'm out of town or maybe it will be out in stores before the 3rd? I called the apple customer service line and the woman told me they should be in stores today, but all the stores I called in the LA area said they have no clue when it will be in. Any insight from anyone?

Depending on who you talk to you will probably get different answers. It all comes down to how many and what options you add to it.

What you may want to do it call your nearest Apple Retail Store and ask them to put one on hold for you. (Granted you want a stock model)

What odd is that sometimes the retail versions of the Macs are just slightly different from their online counterparts.

Well yes, but the original poster was acting like running TM on current notebooks wouldn't even be possible. External backups are always a good idea and anyone who doesn't back up their stuff is just knocking on trouble's front door.

If you are near a or some Apple retail store then may want to think about looking for a demo unit or refresh unit that meets your needs and pricepoint.

Thermal paste (manufacturing adjustment), the mooo (fan adjustment) and the whine (hopefully a CD problem, not C2D) should be fixed... heat will probably still be there, though.

I'm not sure about this.

I had heard from the developer grapevine that Time Machine would ghost out the volumes that were on the same physical device. You could select network volumes or other physical drive volumes but not a volume on the same physical drive as the system disk.

This may not be the way it is when it actually ships or maybe Apple is purposely restricting TM so that people won't be mislead nto believing that their system is being backed-up in the event the same physical drive fails.

Stupid graph of C2D notbook launch dates

That graph is so mis-leading because all those PC companies who "released" laptops ont that date didn't actually ship them until more than a month later (I know a couple PC people that still have not recieved theirs!)

Apple did the right thing and waited for more supply of the chips.

It never was standard - even first thing this morning when it went online. At least not on the USA store. Now on the 17" page, the glossy and matte options are flip-flopped from the 15" MBP CTO pages, but the matte option is still checked by default.

Hehe... Although, they have the Merom Intel release date and not actual ship dates for notebooks. All PC makers on that graph had C2D notebooks shipping by 9/5/06 with the exception of HP... HP released on 10/9/06, but graphing that would kinda ruin the joke, eh?

I belive I overheard one of the genius at my store saying to a customer that the MBPs (merom of course) were meant to run at temperatures up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit!!!!

With apple's design standards, heat may always be an issue for some people. In some ways it always has been.

As for moi, I'm waiting for them to put Xeon chips inside the iMacs. With ketchup on them. Thats when I'll 'pull the trigger'

Oh, that and for Leopard (atleast 10.5.3). Thats when I'll really pull the thing, as for now, I'm sticking with my beloved 12" PPC, build 8L127 PB

:D :D

Good info, thanks! I just don't want them to sell out of it altogether. The deal for the MBP and also the 99 dollar nano are both very tempting and I may pull the trigger on them sometime next week. Seems like they are better deals than at the store. I can't add a student discount on that can I? How about for applecare? Thanks again!

Yes.

Not to be mean or anything but look at the tech specs page on their website. That will give you all the gory details about it.;)
