Could the decision not have been due to heat issues? I understand that the 7200RPM drives get significantly hotter than their 5400RPM counterparts.

Most of the upgrade was pretty much predictable, but the hard drive "upgrade" really threw me. Awesome, Apple released a 200GB drive that's slower than my 3 year old Toshiba drive!

Heat you are right im sure but I just was thinking with the c2d being cooler it may not matter but again you are right i guess.

Yeah but the 200 gig model... is that even made an rpm of higher then 4200?

When you have to move the heads for a random seek, there are two components to the seek time.

rotational latency inproves by 0.00158 seconds by spining the platters faster. That's 1.5 milliseconds. But rotational latency only applies to the first sector in a block

On a large server seek time matters much more because the disks are serving the files for many users and the heds tend to move at random. On a sigle user system like a Mac even when multi-tasking the main use of the disk is for large sequential reads (loading files) and seek times mater much less then the sustained bit rate. Seek times hardly matter because the drive is mostly acting as if it were a tape drive.

As far as the graph goes...how many of those companies were actually shipping those in any large quantity? I just read yesterday that most if not all c2d portables were showing ship times of early November. Apple went with the higher mhz c2d and some manufactureres went with lower numbers and shipped a few earlier. They pretty much announced them and that was about it.

you are right... like what i said... that guy's graph is pointless and meaningless

I ordered mine this morning as soon as the site came up...

ship date - oct 30
arrival date- nov 6

i did regular shipping, but i did regualr shipping on my ipod and that came from japan and i got it in two days, so i dunno, i am hoping that i get it in two and not that long...dont want to upgrade shipping, heck i just paid 135 bux of taxes..for the darn thing..

Same ship dates here. I order a half hour ago.

I think Apple uses the cheapest non-ground international shipping option from FedEx. So, at most 5 days. I took my iPod 5 days to get from China to rural New Hampshire.

Negative votes???

As of 700 posts, there are 164 negatives compared to 180-ish positives.

Friends, what gives? If you are bummed that there is not a C2D MB today, that is independent of the fact that the MBP went C2D.

I think negatives should be if you think this was a bad upgrade to the MBP.

edit: fixed typo

I sooooo want one of these!! This sounds much more attractive than a macbook I was originally thinking about getting. I still don't have the cash for one though.

Personally I was hoping Centrino was used in the macbook (sadly it was not) because Centrino means longer battery life (it’s 3:30+ on a pc, so will be much higher on a mac) and less heat. For power and gaming I would simply take out my iMac or my pcs.

What are you talking about? Centrino is a platform spec and a marketing label, nothing more. Both the Macbook and MBP can be considered "Centrino" or more properly "Centrino Duo" notebooks because they contain all the components necessary for the "Centrino Duo" platform. Core Duo "Yonah" CPU, i945 chipset, WiFi b/g, BlueTooth, etc.. Any notebook that has all these things, can buy into Intel's Centrino marketing program an place that "Centrino" sticker on their system. ...Last time I checked, metallic Centrino stickers didn't increase battery life. But then again, people will believe anything -- afterall, a few months back, a company here in the states was selling stickers to put on your gas tank that were supposed to increase gas mileage by as much as 5%.

And no, the battery life in a Macbook would be the same if Apple had licensed the "Centrino Duo" label for it and placed that ugly-ass sticker on there. Battery life in the MB is what it is due to the components and design of the system... Same with PCs. A Mac doesn't magically get better battery life than a PC. It's a balance of what components are in a system and how the system is designed as well as what software is run - and more than just the OS. But, FWIW, Windows actually has some pretty darn good power management features.

Is anyone upgrading their MBP C2D to 3GB RAM? If so, where can you buy a 2GB stick, and for how much?

do you guys think i should just go ahead and buy a macbook then? i would love a MBP, but its to expensive.. im just a highschool student, and the black would really be great.

i dont know what to do :(

If refurb doesnt sound scary to you then you can also consider that option as well. Refurb 2.0CD MBP is now available for only 1449(plus taxes). Sounds like a good deal to me.

I don't get it myself either?  I think people just don't know enough about the C2D chip and it's added benefits. People should read MacRumors Guide about the C2D, Wikipedia, and Intel site to get more info on it.

Yes. This was actually a very good update. More ram, 64 bit support, FW 800, Faster, Cooler, Merom CPU, DL 6x DVD burner.

In high intensity, CPU dependent usage, tests of Merom have been shown it to dissipate slightly more power than Yonah-nope on PC's which are thicker than the MBP, so how do you know the MBP C2D is cooler? The systems have not been run throught the usual tests, they only became available today. I'd wait for a few weeks before making such casual statements about being "cooler".

very good update, and Apple could not have put all of these things or than Merom into the MBP15 at the same time they had all these items in at the introduction of the MBP17? Please, that hardly constitutes a 'very good update', I'd say it's a very, very long overdue minor update to the MBP15.

People alwyas expect more. AAPL -0.41 (-0.50%)...same idea.

pre-n airport cards hidden?

id be curious of exactly the same thing. makes sense if this is something they are gearing up toward.

In some earlier posts people noticed that the new 20" Imac's Airport Extreme (54G) cards were being detected as pre-N cards in Windows Vista (bootcamp).

Can any early buyers have a look at how the MacBook Pro's Airport Extreme cards are being detected under Windows Vista?

I would assume these would make use of pre-N chips as well which could hint at possibly iTV support or driver/firmware updates in the (near) future without having to upgrade the hardware...

Cooler because if you were to compare the CD vs. the C2D with the same MHz, the C2D will be slightly cooler. Although I am no expert and just read about that so I obviously could wrong.

Looking at the specs I'm not too upset that I didn't wait for the new model. Been 3 months since I bought my MBP. Most of the new stuff I wouldn't use. (Though the inclusion of a 1GB memory stick instead of a stupid 512 is nice)

Well that could and probably is more because of closing so high yesturday (sell off for some profit). If the stock goes down tomorrow then we know it's because of the MBP speed bump(upgrade to me).

Has anyone ordered a CTO 15" 2.33GHz from the developer store? I did this morning, and a 20" cinema display appeared out of nowhere. If you go to the USA developer store (a few clicks away from here) and select the 15" 2.33GHz, the Apple Displays section doesn't appear like it does for other configurations and other stores. If you add it to your cart without changing anything, no monitor shows up. However, if you do change an option, you get a 20" display in your cart after adding it. Here's my order as it appeared in my cart:
MacBook Pro, 15-inch, 2.33GHz
Part Number: Z0DQ
Accessory Kit
Accessory Kit
160GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
3GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 1x2GB, 1x1GB
MacBook Pro 15-inch Glossy Widescreen Display
2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Apple Cinema Display (20" flat panel)
SuperDrive 6x (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
The price doesn't indicate any extra charge for the monitor. Yay, free monitor? But, after I placed my order, on the order status page:
MBPRO 15/2.33 CTO
Z0DQ
2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
3GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM-1x2GB,1x1GB
160GB Serial ATA Drive@5400rpm
SuperDrive 6X
15" Glossy Widescreen Display
BkLit Keyboard/Mac OS
Country Kit
What happened to the monitor I didn't explicitly select, but, according to my shopping cart, I agreed to receive? I remember seeing the monitor on the "confirm your order" page, but, in my excitement, I didn't save it or take a screenshot. This was completely accidental, so I won't be very disappointed if I don't get a free monitor, but, it seems like I should get one, according to the way the developer store behaved this morning and still behaves now.

Newegg.com had them a week or so ago for about $589 (ouch). What's sad is 2GB sticks were available back at the end of August for under $400, but people have been snatching them up now that Dell and other big vendors (even Apple) have started offering them. So price is going up....

I'll swap out one of my 1GB sticks for a 2GB to give me 3 total when the prices normalize a bit more. Not worth it right now... OTOH, I may just tough it out for another year and then buy a new MBP that can take and use a full 4GB.

Apple's stock probably always goes up on Mondays when new stuff is expected and down when it is released.

Wow that's nasty. I was thinking 2GB would be like maybe 200 bucks. But I guess not. Lol.

Yes but in my opinion the 64-bit support is a bigger deal then people are making it out to be. Like I said in a previous post... "I unerstand about not needing the 64-bit capabilities but remember that with Leopard not too far off (having all that 64-bit support) then you may want to think about it for the future. After Leopard, more apps will take at least SOME advantage (or maybe all) of the 64-bit power. And after 10.5 64-bit support and performance will just get better (optimization etc.)

And like I said in a previoous reply (page 19)... the C2Ds have much improved SSEx integer units. For me thats a HUGE plus!!!

aka rendering, ripping, and encoding = faster faster faster"

Student discount on the demo units or refresh items??? Well, I am not COMPLETELY positive but if I were a betting man I'd say no, Apple isn't that generous to say the least. AppleCare... I'd be shocked if you couldn't.

I don't have that much experience dealing with the "Hidden Table Items" as I call them.

What 99 dollar nano???

On apple's website they have refurb 2ghz MBP for 1449 and refurb 2gb nano (2nd gen not the new one) for 99 bucks. Both good deals in my opinion!

I saw that earlier today when I was playing with the dev store and a shopping cart. I think that this is a glitch of how the applecare is being displayed back. The AppleCare covers a MBP w/ or w/o up to a 20" display. I'm sure they are not giving away a 20" display to it's developers. If so, then I'm signing up for ADC today!

Congrats on your new MBP!!!
