As noted, the Apple price to upgrade to 3 gb ram is reasonable, compared to other prices available today. It's not as simple as adding another 1 gb stick of ram. Since there are only two slots, you have to take out a 1 gb stick and add a 2 gb stick, hence the significant cost. However, hopefully over the next few months the costs for a 2 gb stick will come down, like they did for 1 gb sticks.

you would need to replace one of the 1gb modules with a 2gb module
I'd be more then happy to buy a 1 GB stick off of you Macbook Pro upgraders. :D

Looks like we have a market for higher capacity RAM now.

Where'd my 7200rpm go? Maybe on a vacation to Santa Rosa...

I think I have made a decision to buy a MBP, but I am going to wait until spring so that I can get leopard as part of it. Also, do you think Intel's santa rosa will be integrated into apple by spring or am wishing for way to much? If santa rosa is supposed to be such a big improvement, then I really don't want to have just bought the MBP and waited for so long to get a model that is clearly going to be much improved with santa rosa. Did you notice they took away the 7200rpm option from the 15'' model? that really sucks in my opinion. It was what I really wanted to get as an add on and I think would have been very useful.

Hmmm, is it me or is FW 800 suddenly becoming very popular? Possibly for those quick back-ups to an external HD for Time Machine when Leopard is released?

Definitely!

Obviously waiting is ok but you do realize that by spring they could mean end of May right?

I would say late spring to mid summer for Santa Rosa PCs to really start shipping. Apple won't be using the Centrino label program and may pick and choose which components of the platform to use. Much of it will be ready before "Santa Rosa" is (like the Crestline chipset). Based on Apple's product cycles, I would say we're at least 6 months away from a major upgrade like this. Depending on the magnitude of the update Apple may push a quick release compared to the C2D launch. But I would say late April at the earliest, but Summer '07 would be the next "window" for new MBP models.

I would cancel that order and get the C2D 2.16GHz 15" Ed for only $1799. Remember it has 4MB L2 cache and according to the CD vs C2D speed comparisons is a lot faster even at the same speed as CD. That plus the FW800 port will make it have a much higher resale value than what you just bought.

I AGREE! Here is a picture of a refurb MacBook Pro a friend recently bought. The box was not damaged in shipment either. That's what it looked like when he took it out of the box!

Are you sure he didn't order a CurveBook Pro?

Yes, I do realize that. I am doing my best to stay on here and post messages instead of studying so that I can fail my third year of law school and keep my educational discount for another year. Seems like a good inveatment to do so.:D

ROFLMAO @ the warped MBP.

FWIW, I bought a 15" refurb MBP and it's been a perfect system. I guess the QC manager didn't show up on the day this guy's notebook went through inspection.

Great news, can't wait to buy one...

Anyone found them at any of their local apple stores yet?

[first post, long time lurker]

If you dont wan't to read my apple store rant, just scroll all the way down to the bottom of this post...

I have to start off by saying that I was definately caught up in all Merom hoopla *hides*, so when it was finally announced yesterday, I headed straight to the Apple store to see if anyone there could shed some light on when they would/should be expecting any. Just looking for a friendly fellow mac-person to talk to, wasn't really expecting definate release dates or anything. I don't have much experience with the Apple store, aside from the occasional browsing, so I really didn't know what to expect from the employees. Needless to say, everyone there was absolutely clueless as to what I was even talking about. I've heard good and bad stories about the people there, and I'd have to say my first real "buying" experience was dissapointing to say the least. It took me 20 minutes and talking to 6 different "Apple Specialists" untill I got to speak to someone who could help me.

So after all that, I was finally told they have no idea when they should be expecting any c2d's. Strangely enough, he went on to say that all the current models are now being sold brand new at discounted prices, $1699, $1799, & $1899 The numbers written on this little business card he pulled out his pocket. I thought that was a bit weird. Before I got a chance to ask him more about the current stock sale, he promptly ran off to do something else. I was so annoyed, I just left.

So I figured I'd head out there this morning and see if I can get someone to explain to me the current stock sale a bit more. And of course, once again, the poor guy looked at me like a deer in headlights, so then I got in touch with a "keyholder". He told me, there would be no sale of current stock, that I was misinformed. If I wanted to buy the older models at a cheaper price, to go online and buy refurbished. I'm not the argumentative type, so I just nodded and left.

*deep breath* :p

Alright here it is...
He went on to say, they expect all the stock 15"'ers on display and up for sale this Saturday. :)

Hmm... that is a really good point I did not think of regarding cherry pickinng what they want from Intel. I think the Crestline chipset is what I mostly interested in due to its impact on front bus performance. So you think it would be reasonable to see Apple add this in by late April-late May? I love the update with the 2 Due, but the addition of the crestline I think would be a wonderful improvement and an inveatment in a meachine that included that would likely be able to last me a really decent length of time.

Mine just shipped today(25th Oct) as well. It originally said 30th as the ship date so I'm stoked. A bit confused why the delivery date is still the 6th Nov though?! Maybe just need to wait for it to be updated when the courier (UPS) updates the info, I can't actually track it through UPS yet. Oh and I'm in the UK.

Anyone hear if they had their 17'' shipped? I bought mine at 9 am EST. Tuesday. It says it's supposed to ship Nov 7, 2006, and be delievered by Nov 13, 2006. I also got the fastest shipping I could get. I'm not complaining, I'd just like to have it sooner - so hopefully that will be the case.

sudden motion sensors?

do the macbook pros still come with the sudden motion sensors on the hdd? i haven't seen any mention of that feature since the last powerbook revisions.

To everyone posting that their mbp has already shipped: you suck. made my order for a 17" first thing Tuesday and the ship date still shows nov. 7. *sigh*

How long do you think my MacBook Pro will take to arrive?
When I ordered my Powerbook, it arrived the following day it shipped. I live in Rome and it came from The Nederlands.

Anyone have an idea on what to do about the missing 7200rpm on the 15" model without having to get a 17" ? I was really looking forward to that when I made my purchase. If you don't have a suggestion on the 7200rpm directly, what would you say is the next best thing in terms of goodies to add on that will serve me well, I am inctrested primarily with speed and and as a close runner up storage.

i just called apple and got this...

you are so right, there is nothing more furstrating than having someone repeat information that is readly available to a consumer on the internet. It makes me mad as a consumer and even more furstrated as an investor who can't stand duplication of processes, although the $81+ is serving as quite a good narcotic to calm my nerves. haha
