Centrino (Pentium M) -> Yonah (Core Duo) -> Merom (Core 2 Duo) -> Santa Rosa (Core 3 Duo)...

As someone else mentioned, Core 3 won't launch for years.

Centrino is a goofy, meaningless marketing name for some laptops that have Intel chips in them, it doesn't refer to a CPU. (See also, "Viiv" and "Live"-I can't even tell you what those two supposedly refer to.)

Another "What should I get" question

Ok - so I've decided. I'm getting a MBP. Totally stoked, as this is my first mac, though I've worked with them all year.

I just can't decide between the two models. I know I want 2gb RAM and the 160GB drive. The difference at that point between the upper and lower end model is the 2.16ghz vs. 2.33 and the 128mb vid. ram vs. 256. That difference costs about $250 at the ADC student discount price, which is what I would get.

So what is the real-world difference. I assume the processor difference is minimal? I do alot of stuff with my computer - FCP, photo editing (PS and aperture), Ilife, etc. will I actually notice any difference with that 1.9ghz upgrade?

The video ram is a bit more interesting. I know I can't *Really* game on the mac. But I don't want to totally rule out the possibility, as every now and then I like to crank up ut2k4 or wc3 or something. So - what will the main difference be between 128mb and 256? the X1600 is so weak anyway - will it make a difference? Can anyone point me to benches or real world reviews?

Basically, if I will notice a difference I'm totally willing to pay the extra money for the higher end machine, as this lappy will last me a while (hopefully). But I dont want to spend money on stuff I dont need. Like all of us.

It's been a long wait

Going to be a lot longer wait for me.

I won't have the dough until probably Feb '07

I might consider getting a cheap Dell until then.

blah.

What time did your laptop get shipped and from where? I'm curious because mine shipped today as well. My estimated delivery date is the 27th though.

Apple just replaced my PB with a MBP and it shipped today from Shanghai. I am assuming they upgraded me to the new model and not the old pre-tuesday as was originially told i was getting last friday.

2. The optimally efficient drive for the 15inch MBP is the 160Gb
Is this correct? I've been wondering about calling and upgrading the hd from the standard 120, but the 80gb I've got at the minute is nowhere near full.

No idea myself - but it's something I read a couple of times 20-odd pages back in this thread

Shipped from Shanghai:

8:09 PM Left origin SHANGHAI CN

4:31 PM Package data transmitted to FedEx

I presume that is Shanghai time.

At 6:35 AM PDT I got the shipping notification from Apple.

A simple question

After so many years I still wonder if there is really someone that pays an overprice of more than $500 for a simple expansion of memory from 2Gb to 3 Gb while can be found for somewhat between 129 and 169 (depending on your preference on brand)?

I know that the accessories is where Apple make a lot of money but nowadays is so easy to install more ram and disk that someone in marketing have not realized yet that they are not getting too many users that way.

and that was just the first site I checked to see what the expansion option are... on hard drives is not so bad but the difference in price for Ram is absolutely ridiculous.

You Misread The 2GB Module Price Which Is $680 NOT $129-$169

You Misread The 2GB Module Price Which Is $680 NOT $129-$169. Apple's price for the 2GB module is a totally reasonable $517 Ed or $575 List. OWC Charges MORE not less.

2GB RAM modules are still stratospheric in price. Hopefully that will change in 2007 as the RAM industry shifts it's manufacturing capacity toward making many more 2GB modules than heretofore.

2Gb->3Gb will cost 679.99 from your link. There are only 2 slots, and systems with 2Gb have 2 x 1Gb modules in them.

the 2.16 ($1999) models are in the boston store. they're expecting the 2.33's any day now (this is what i'm waiting for). I haven't been to check them out yet, but i'm getting excited!

Ram

I am not the most computer savvy person in the world. But, I was wondering about upgrading the RAM myself. Having only two slots in the MBP, and the standard 2gb model has 2x1 gb modules, would you have to buy a single 2gb module to replace one of the standard modules?? Or, can one slot fit multiple modules, therefore allowing me to buy a 1 gb module to add to the standard 2x1gb module that comes with the 2 gb MBP. I am very confused about this, and need to figure it out before I purchase the machine.

Basically, what Im asking is if I buy the standard 2 gb MBP model, do I have to buy a 2gb module to achieve full 3gb potential, or can I just buy 1gb, and add it to the existing 2x1 gb modules. ...thats still pretty confusing... sorry....Thanks so much for any help though!

never mind, you guys answered my questions..... i thought it was cheaper updating through apple..... thanks!!

Anyone who takes the time to look on forums like this or research a bit will buy their RAM from somewhere besides Apple. With the new MBP systems though, Apple got a bit sneaky by including 2GB as standard on all but the lowest model - effectively charging the consumer for it no matter what. But oh well.

As for the update to 3GB, Apple's price is too high, but these 2GB modules have shot up in price from a bit under $400 each to over $600 each in the past 5 to 6 weeks. Demand for them keeps growing and manufacturing hasn't caught up. I bet 2GB modules will be back down to the $385 range by January/February - I hope. Because I'd really like to upgrade my new MBP from 2GB to 3GB, but at the current best price I can find (Kingston ValueRAM PC2-5300 2GB SODIMM is $632 + $5 shipping). :(

I knew I should have bought a handful of those 2GB modules from Newegg.com back in August when they had them in stock for $389 shipped. ;)

Edit: Newegg has the Transcend 2GB modules back in stock today for $630.99 + $4.99 shipping. Really crappy considering just two weeks ago they were $589 and $180 cheaper than that only a month or so before.... :(

As noted, the Apple price to upgrade to 3 gb ram is reasonable, compared to other prices available today. It's not as simple as adding another 1 gb stick of ram. Since there are only two slots, you have to take out a 1 gb stick and add a 2 gb stick, hence the significant cost. However, hopefully over the next few months the costs for a 2 gb stick will come down, like they did for 1 gb sticks.
