Slightly off topic but PowerPoint for Mac is REALLY hard to use. I wish i could use Keynote but my presentation has to be windows compatible. Urgh!

i ordered a stock 2.33ghz 15" at 5.50am PST (10 minutes after release). it still hasnt shipped. there have been no changes to the initial ship date of "october 30th"

im in berkeley, california

btw, for those of you who managed to get one from an apple store. any first impressions? id love to hear an initial review

oh, and i used the education discount as well.

from what ive read, it seems for the US, the 2.16ghz machines have been the first to ship. most of the 2.33s that have shipped seem to be in europe

But sorry to be dense but I've no real idea in practical terms how slow the 200Gb drive is going to be compared with the 160Gb. Obviously it's going to take a bit longer to do certain things, but what are these certain things and how noticeable would the difference be? Any examples anyone who knows?

Most day to day things it doesn't make any difference because it all gets cached in memory (both reads and writes). The time it makes a difference is accessing massive amounts of data. Like copying massive amounts of data. Like if you write a 4GB file, it may take twice as long. Remember though, if you write a 500MB file, it may not take longer at all if the OS has enough memory to cache it.

Yeah, look the 160MB is a kind of sweet spot as some have said. Just keep in mind it's better to get the 200MB if you even think you may need the space.

A previous poster said that OSX automatically defragments when you upgrade or install apps. I find that very hard to believe because installing an app is not special from an OS point of view. If by some amazing feat OSX could defragment in day to day use, then the fuller your disk, the more it will be worked at defragmenting. There will be no free lunch I think.

This site here says that the notion HFS doesn't need defragmenting is "invincible ignorance”. I think it's probably right.

wanna get a stock 2.16 15", but cant decide on glossy. i just read so many threads on glossy vs. matte, but it just made my head swim even more. any suggestions? i've compared the two, i like the look of glossy better, but then there's all the "glare, smudgy, not professional, cheaper, etc" arguments that deter me. what do i do?

buy matte

i agree. stick with matte. while it comes down to individual preference, my philosophy is to stick with what you know. if it aint broke, dont fix it.

Mine shipped today too :D

Shipment Date:
OCT 25, 2006
Estimated Delivered By:
OCT 30, 2006

I'll have my bad-boy by Monday!!!

Non-BTO MA609LL ($1999 USD model)

May I ask what it says under "service type" on the FedEx tracking page?

Yesterday, around 9:00am PST, I ordered a matte 17in C2D MBP w/ 2GB Ram and a 160HD . I did this through my school store's academic front-end to the Apple store. I got an Apple Order Acknowledgement email around
6:15pm PST.

They're estimating a Nov 07 ship date to my residence in San Diego, California, with the arrival date to be Nov 15.

This seems sort of late doesnt it? Has anyone else recieved similar dates for delivery? Is there a way I can have this student discounted order processed through one of my local Apple Stores, thereby getting it here quicker?

Barkins Do You Have It Yet?

I got lucky and got a phone call from an Apple store who was holding one for me this morning. :D
Barkins do you have it in your possession already? Please report if it has HD access in the battery compartment where RAM goes. You got Photos unpacking for us?

Multi, if barkins does not respond before i get back, i will post photos and let you know about the HD.

i am leaving in just a few minutes to go pick up my 2.16 at the apple store. :D

Yeah I have it my possession, in fact I'm typing on it right now. I'll snap some photos of it tonight after work.

I'll crack open the battery compartment to see if the HD is accessible as well.

deny the impulse

I just placed my order for the 2.33 GHZ C2D MBP and in a technogasm-induced fever I almost selected the Glossy screen. All those phrases like "richer colors" and "deeper blacks" were ringing in my head, and I went to the Apple Store in Manhattan (55th St) last month and DAMN they look pretty! It all seemed to make sense, this new fad of glossy screens. I can watch DVDs just like on a CRT! or show photos to a whole room with bursting, vivid colors! Maybe it IS worth going glossy...

No. It's not. It's a silly fad. It does look nice, but if you let your eyes drift focus, then you can see the pristine image of the room behind you. And the lamp beside the MBP on your desk. And your own face staring back at you. and all the people walking through the store behind you (if you're in the Apple store that is ;) )

Glossy screens are like candy. They're real good at first, but they won't add up to anything and will only irritate you if you eat a lot of them. (How's that for a mixed metaphor!)
So - my advice - keep eating the matte screens. I did.

Apple's Own Retail Stores Confused

I just got off the phone with a guy at the apple store and he said they recieved some display models today but theyt wouldn't have sellable product for a week. However when i spoke with someone this afternoon they said they are expecting product as soon as tommorow. Is it really possible that apple retail stores don't even know what product is coming to them and when?

Oh and I went with matte, no brainer.
Exactly what I ordered yesterday. Your right. No brainer. I can't wait.

BTW for the people who are torn between Matte & Glossy. I would buy Matte, if you want Glossy after, just by the glossy sheet.

thanks for all of the replies so far! I don't really get why I got some (sort of) sarcastic ones? I really am just wondering how everyone really does it! any other answers/replies?

Barkins - I can't believe you got so lucky! you've gotta post pictures ASAP.

Yes. At times, I've gone in and known more then the workers just by reading info here. Some workers are there b/c its hip to work at an Apple store. They could very well go home after work and check their myspace pages from a Dell.

I placed my order for a stock 2.16 (would I really notice .17ghz?) at 7:50am yesterday, not scheduled to ship out until the 30th, with 2 day delivery estimated at Nov 2nd.

I did however, just today get my 30" ACD.. unboxing pics? Sure!

:D :D :D :D :D SOooo Big!

Oh, and I ordered glossy...

I like the way it looks on my Macbook, and I have the 30" for it when at home, so I went glossy for on the go use.

I don't know what a glossy sheet is, but no "sheet" will be able to put back the lost information caused by the diffusing surface of a matte screen.

In theory, you should be able to add a matte sheet to diffuse the light from a glossy screen though.

Remember, you can make something fuzzy by adding something on top. But you can't do the reverse and unfuzzy it.
