a) Some nitwit wasn't able to understand that there was a lot of us that wanted Apples first real laptop in several years. (Yea, I know that's harsh, but the tiny bumps on the G4 and a Rev A intel doesn't quite cut it for many of us) So they may have underestimated demand.

b) They lack some parts, which kinda correlates with a), since that would be a demand-issue.

c) They have run into problems in the production of this machine. I for one have not heard of ONE person that has seen a live MBP 17" C2D, which seems strange to me.

Anyway, same for me, shipping pushed from 7th to 14th..

Reach, where are you located?

Norway, so Europe here too, let's just hope the delays isn't distributed by geography, that would piss me off far worse than them running into some problems..

You know what annoys me the most tonight 'Reach' is that no-one at Apple sent an e-mail of some discription to tell me of this bump in dates...I had to stumble upon it by myself because my curiosity won't sit still {that and being genuinely excited as to my new product. Its my first personal Mac}

These dates, i.e. 7th S. and 14th D., has stood for three weeks now since I spent MY money on their product after waiting patiently in the first instance and they can't even be bothered to say, sorry, we have X, Y or Z problem and thus your dates have been pushed back {of course me and everyone else in the same position...yourself included}

AAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrrrrrr:mad:

Ok, hear me out -

So far, it seems to be the case that EU is getting theirs later than expected. I was sitting here scratching my head and wondering what could possibly determine this... I know it's a stretch, but the only thing I could come up with is the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday in the States. For many, this is nearly a 5 day holiday - Wednesday night to Sunday evening.

Its the most heavily traveled holiday of the year AND the day before the largest shopping day of the year - Black Friday (boo!)

Anyways, if you consider Apple's stance with this, it makes sense that they would FIRST try to get out the portables to those who would need them while traveling. Secondly, if the portables in the States were ALSO pushed back beyond Black Friday, you could bet that average buyer might cancel their order and pick up an alternate machine while they were out shopping on the most discounted commercial day of the year.

Just a theory, that slightly makes sense....

Now THAT makes sense. (only if they have a shortage - and why would they have a shortage ???)

I am all in favour, in theory, for supporting your claims as to potential "whys" on this situation as you have stated above but I have to disagree to a certain extent. What you have said sounds in a business sense like a policy driven concept, i.e. a deliberate choice on behalf of Apple to capture the dynamics of the market at the approriate times, in this instance the Thanksgiving time.

Someone didnt wake up yesterday at Apple and realise there was a major time frame in place to boost selling potential (holiday) and then wake up today and decide to pull back all 17" shipments to Europe. I tend to think along Reach's analysis that there are "technological" reasons behind this mess. However, I still don't think this is a satisfactory reason even at that and remain extremely displeased at todays development.

Do any of you agree with me that "we" should have been contacted and told about this bump? Or am I just being overly optimistic?

I think my theory, coupled with a technological issue that you are suggesting, makes total sense. Why did they wait to the day you were expecting shipping to begin? I have no idea. I think that is lame. I agree with you.

But companies CAN miscalculate projections and, then shift and reprioritize products based on demand. It happened with the 2G Shuffle.

So, all in all, I think something came up (intel or hd, who knows) demand could not be met in full, and demographically speaking, Apple decided to put their product in the hands of those who were the most capable AND willing, to change their minds.

It's not a conspiracy theory. It seems likely. But I agree, I think their timing is lame. Again, from a business standpoint, they HAD to announce the availability of a product family line at the same time. If they forewarned any of us about this, they would have lost sales AGAIN, or would have had 17inch people jump to the 15inch, causing the same problem, but with regards to their most popular portable model. That's no good either.

Delayed!

My shipping and delivery times have also been delayed:mad:

Now it says
shipping Nov 13th (order status says 14th)
delivery Nov 22nd or 23rd

We are not amused:mad:

Theories aside, I still think there is strong liklihood that by tonight, I might be writing here just as enraged as my european peers.

You never know with Apple - the fruit of temptation and lies!

Fair points!!! At the end of the day...what the hell do I know...;)

The most stupid thing of all this for me...you'll never have seen me more keen to do an essay for university! I was SO looking forward to typing it up on my new toy. A friend has just asked me to remain calm and that in time I will of course do plenty of work on it, some of it that I will not be so keen on doing (hehehe) but obviously most of it I will. Now I will have to endure my essay on the university campus PCs.

And the final irony my friends...the essay is on Globalization, Policy, Cultural Imperialism and the multi-national corporate machine. I could actually just burst out laughing right now if I wasn't so pissed off! hahahaha

If I might throw a little Occam's Razor in here, a supply chain is a very difficult thing to manage, and Apple has dozens for the MBP alone.

Any number of factors can disrupt the supply chain, unexpected demand is one - which, if rumor has it, is rather spectacular - even by Apple's standard.

I suggest there isn't mal-intent here, just supply chain issues.

Creeping Delay?

My schedule for shipping and delivery has also gone from the 7&14th to the 14&23rd...I am absolutely enraged by this!!!!!!!

Same delay for me (MBP 17" scheduled to ship on the 7th, now 14th Nov). This had better not be a 'creeping delay' whereby a very long delay is disguised by being dished out in 'manageable' smaller chunks. One week is as much as I want to put up with.

So, as far as anyone posting here is aware, is it the case that all of the 17" machines are delayed?

17" Mbp

Dagnabit, and I bought a cool laptop bag for it. Now its just me staring at an empty bag. Fill the bag Mr Jobs! Fill the bag! :)

An Apple rep told me today that ALL 17" MBPs are back ordered

USA order pushed back too

Just got off the phone with a rep at MacConnection here in the US.

First she said the MBP should arrive either late this week or early next. When I asked her to clarify if that meant it arrives at her door or mine, she said "ohhh.. wait a minute, now we're expecting a shipment on the 15th."

Which probably means I won't see it until maybe the 22nd, which is dangerously close to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Lucky for me, my Apple Care arrived today! Does this mean I'll be burning through 3 weeks of Warranty coverage without even having a computer?

17" delay in USA

Order
2.33 17" Glossy
Everything else stock

Ordered 10/24
Ship date 11/07
Delivery 11/16

UPDATED
Ordered 10/24
Ship Date 11/08
Delivery 11/16

I know its just the ship date that slipped, but I'm still getting a little nervous now. I hope delivery date doesn't keep fall back. I was really counting on Apple to over estimate it all so I'd get it sooner...

This delay maybe a sign...

that I should not be buying a MBP. I don't mean this will make me start looking at other notebooks -- I've decided to buy a Mac and that's that. I also convinced myself that to avoid potential hassles (and avoid paying a sales tax) I'm going to buy a stock machine. I was drawn to the 17" MBP because the specs of the stock machine are just about perfect for me (2GB RAM, 256 MB VRAM, large hard disk) while the stock versions of other Macs I was considering (the Mac Pro and the 24" iMac) fall short of my needs/wants in terms of RAM and VRAM.

So maybe now, while I'm waiting for the 17" MBP, Apple will release new Mac Pros with more base memory, and/or silently bump up the specs on the 24" iMac. If that happens, bye bye MBP

Oh No!

Reality Bites!:p

First post, first Mac.

Friday morning I order a MacBook Pro C2D in the stock 2.33ghz config. It shipped the same day from Shanghai and arrived today in Seattle, WA, two day shipping!

It's perfect, no flaws and I loving every minute.

Muthaeffin ********te. Screw my previous theories. Apple is just plain dicks.

I'm calling first thing tomorrow and demanding my shipping be upgraded.

OK-

Aside from my nice new empty computer bag, a 17inch neoprene sleeve, a 17inch radtech keypad protector, and a 17inch static cling screen guard that are all NOT being used, I have a SERIOUS concern...

For some reason I feel like this is a creeping delay, not too unsimilar from what we saw with the 2G iPod Shuffle.
I can live with a delay past Thanksgiving. Hell, I can live with one until December, but I wouldnt prefer NOT to do so.

Do you think this delay could possibly keep pushing back beyond XMAS?!?!
I absolutely NEED a new machine for my 3 week travel in dec/jan. With all the gear I bought for a 17inch MBP (that I expected next week), I can't return any of this stuff in order to downgrade to a 15inch MBP.

If the delay goes beyond next week, I think we should start a petition asking Apple for free AppleCare AND free next day shipping.
