Muthaeffin ********te. Screw my previous theories. Apple is just plain dicks.

I'm calling first thing tomorrow and demanding my shipping be upgraded.

LOL...

Upgrade your shipping to what? If you're in N. America, all of these systems ship from Shanghai via FedEx IP Direct, which is 2 to 4 day service. There is no way to upgrade it and paying the extra $18 or whatever that Apple charges is just paying for nothing. FWIW, HP and other notebook makers that direct ship from manufacturers are known for doing the same thing.

If you're in the UK or a few other places, (Australia has the same shipping as the Americas though), you might be able to upgrade as it gets handed over to other carriers like TNT.

Lucky for me, my Apple Care arrived today! Does this mean I'll be burning through 3 weeks of Warranty coverage without even having a computer?

Your warranty starts the day you receive your system. You receiving the AppleCare warranty papers is a good sign though - they usually don't ship AppleCare until your system order enters the production queue and becomes non-cancelable. Not sure what the hold-up is with the 17" models, but I'm sure Apple will be shipping them pretty soon. I doubt it's a chip-shortage as the chips and most components are the same for the 17" as they are for the 15" and in most situations (at least for N. American orders), the 15" systems are still shipping within a couple days. The delay has to do with something specifically related to the 17" model. But there's no point in speculating as there's an infinite number of possibilities. They'll get here when they get here and all dates thus far have been estimates.

...And I'm glad I ordered my 15" and already have had it a week now. :p

Oh No!

Reality Bites!:p

:) I remember back (not so fondly) to the delays that plagued the first gen G5 PowerMacs! Seems like ship dates slid by over a month! I should go back and check all my correspondance with Apple to see what the initial delivery date was compared to the actual date, but I do remember it was waaaaaaay more than the week the 17" MBPs are getting slid.

That's not entirely true. Once that package hits the FedEx receiving grounds, its up to them how they want to prioritize that package. If it ships on the 14th and takes a day or two to get to the US, we could see it by the 22 by ground. Otherwise, an overnight re-priority could get it to the buyer by Friday night.

No, go read the FedEx service descriptions. IP Direct packages are treated as Standard Overnight deliveries as soon as they clear the customs checking at either of the two primary distribution centers. In most situations, shipments coming into the US (since they are bulk palletted air-freight) ship to the distribution hub in Memphis, TN (Shanghai to Anchorage to Memphis). They are broke down and checked through customs and shipped out. As soon as they are cleared for shipment, they are treated as Standard Overnight service from Memphis TN to their next destination within the USA. For Canada and Mexico deliveries, this changes to the proper respective services - usually adding a day or two. From Memphis, not all US cities are served by Overnight delivery so some places take an extra day.

But as far as Apple's options for shipping via FedEx go, the only two choices to ship from Shanghai to the Customer are International Standard Direct and International Priority Direct. IPD is what they use regardless of which shipping option you choose. ISS is similar, but is typically treated as gound delivery once it clears customs. Apple doesn't use ISS.

Anyway, take that as you will... But I ship enough stuff internationally both in and out of here and have ordered enough systems from Apple and others that come direct from Shanghai. FWIW, I've ordered an MBP, 4 G2 shuffles and a Nano in the past few weeks and all of them with standard shipping. All originated from Shanghai and Suzhou and arrived to me in less than 40 hours transit time -- or accounting for the 15 hour time difference between me and Shanghai, right at 2 days.

Order status page

What sux is that i placed an order, (made a stupid mistake of not writing down the order number) just before order status page went down. No email confirmation and phone reps not seeing it. MuggerLager humph! Do i dare order again and cancel prev one? I just want my place in line to get these 17" shipped.

Disappointing

What gets me about delays like this is the fact that, having been advised of the shipping date when you place your order, you reconcile yourself to waiting out the two weeks or so and look forward to getting the notification that it's shipped. When, instead, you get an email at quarter to midnight on the day it should have left Shanghai advising that it's been delayed for a week, it's bl**dy disappointing.

In the last two weeks I've bought a new laptop bag, Parallels, Windows XP (need to run Windows-only CAD software at work), a box of blank dual-layer DVD's and a spare MagSafe power supply (one at home, one at work). I've got everything but the most important bit, and I reckon there's a chance that the date might slip again.

Would be pretty funny if the C2D MacBooks were released today for immediate delivery and we're still waiting for the 17"ers. Perhaps they are secretly swapping the procs with not-yet-announced quad-core ones. :D

hehe Not funny.. :p
At least they're not using our processors or screens..
Bold move from Apple though, if they are indeed having problems supplying the MBP's already.

Refurb or New?

Seems like this thread has become a ticker tape parade of missed ups/fedex tickets and emails about shipping delays.

Back to the original, and hopefully, more interesting discussion.

Now that people actually have hardware in hand and have used the Core 2 Duo, what is the concensus...

I'm on the fence as to either get the 2.33 MHz 15" C2D for $2500 or grab a refurb 2.16Mhz 15" CD with relatively the same specs. 256 on the x1600, 2 GB RAM, 100GB 5400 SATA for $1600.

As of yet, I don't know of anyone broadcasting with an N router, so that's a wash. I understand that the newer hard drives are comperable to a 7200rpm.

So, it begs the question...is a C2D, w/ N-Airport and faster harddrive REALLY worth the extra $900?

Are there any other tangible differences that I am missing?

I'd go for the low end C2D mbp rather than the old model. The x1600 is clocked higher in the new models and unless you really need that extra vid memory for textures (most people don't) the low end MBP is a bargain.

I have to agree with the others - go with the new model, even if you lower the specs a bit. The new C2D versions have made adjustments for better cooling, faster clocked video, etc.. As others have noted. Overall, they're more refined. I originally bought a 15" MBP and then handed it down to the wife when I got the new C2D 2.33GHz model. Having both around here, I can say that the new one is a better unit. OTOH, we're still happy with the old model too and with the prices on the refurbs, it can be very tempting and a good deal.

If you have the budget for it, definitely get the new one though!

I've called Apple today. They told me that my MBP is in production and it will be shipped tomorrow. I'm not very confident, because all orders have been pulled back.

Has any MBP 17 already be shipped?

Don't do it! The 17"er will be worth it. I have one on order as well and REALLY need it ASAP my G4 17" PB just can't handle the pace any longer on virtual PC need parallels NOW :( :)

I'm reporting a ship date window from the 9th to the 14th. Apple said there is a possibility the 17in could delay again, but they couldnt say for sure.

Apparently, the reason why they delayed was b/c more people ordered than was expected. Ok, fair enough, but they had to have SOME quantity right?
I could see if I ordered it a couple of days or a week or so after it was released/announced, but I ordered the machine only a couple of hours after it was "available."

One would think they had enough quantity to take care of the people who first ordered the day of. It seems like they dont have anything for anyone.

avoiding sales tax on bto

that I should not be buying a MBP. I don't mean this will make me start looking at other notebooks -- I've decided to buy a Mac and that's that. I also convinced myself that to avoid potential hassles (and avoid paying a sales tax) I'm going to buy a stock machine. I was drawn to the 17" MBP because the specs of the stock machine are just about perfect for me (2GB RAM, 256 MB VRAM, large hard disk) while the stock versions of other Macs I was considering (the Mac Pro and the 24" iMac) fall short of my needs/wants in terms of RAM and VRAM.

So maybe now, while I'm waiting for the 17" MBP, Apple will release new Mac Pros with more base memory, and/or silently bump up the specs on the 24" iMac. If that happens, bye bye MBP

Akadmon -

FWIW, I ordered a custom machine through Powermax to avoid paying sales tax. (15"/2.16/160gb/2gb ram) They charged me the same Apple price and the minimal shipping is free via rebate so I end up saving almost two hundred bucks versus buying locally or through the Apple store. The downside, however, is that it adds an 8-12 day delay in delivery since the machine goes to them first and then to me. For the savings, I can live with that. (Plus it helped me smooth things over with the missus.)
