One group that will hugely benefit: news gathering organizations. Imagine downloading footage from a prosumer-quality camcorder and editing the video with Final Cut Pro on a higher-end iPad.
Any Apple Silikon Macbook (running anything else than Final Cut really) is much better suited for that task.

How is this much different, or better, than downloading footage from an iPhone 13 or 14 Pro and editing the video in iMovie on any Intel or M1-based MacBook Air or Pro from the past decade?

News footage doesn’t demand/require particularly high-end, FCP-only capabilities or features, does it? Get too fancy with it and it’s no longer straight “news”, and crosses over into something else we definitely don’t need more of. Trimming, zooming, cropping, freeze-framing, captioning, etc. is about all news footage needs done, so how is my scenario above - subscription-free - not just as good? Maybe better? There’s nothing about an iPad and FCP that’s going to do something a MacBook Air and iMovie - for this specific scenario (editing news footage quickly) - isn’t already doing. I think people just want to justify some new toys/goodies. :p

Like everyone else I dislike subscriptions also. However, I’ll live with them if the price is reasonable and the app is always being worked on and not abandoned. The price Apple is asking for is great and matches a bit with an older app release model. In the olden days of yore software would force a purchase every 2-3 years. Going from version 1.9 to 2.0 meant a new purchase. If Apple went this route then every 2-3 years you’d cough up around $300. With subscription you’re spending $150 for 3 years.

Another bonus is that you can sign up for these apps when you need them. Need FCP for a 3 month of shooting? Pay for the 3 months and then drop it. That’s a pretty decent savings if the software works well.

Yes sir! But I think I'm going to wait a few days before I purchase the subscription. I need to find time to do all the editing too.
Well once you decide @TheYayAreaLiving 🎗️ which ever subscription you try ($4.95 a month, or 49.40 annual) you get first month free. Maybe for you try monthly so you get first month to play and then option to pay next I am assuming. I did the annual one because I like to have more than a month or two and summer is busy away from my tech thats more in winter…

That's a flawed argument since you can take the iPad Pro off the Magic Keyboard.
not a flawed argument when apple is showing exactly what steve warned about.
"Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical. After an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off"

You can't detach the screen from a MacBook. Also you can use Apple Pencil with iPad Pro and Final Cut.
then showcase it that way.

I wish Apple would just make their own Audio Interface already and just call it a day. Add some audio focused chips for DSP and latency to the Apple Silicon SoC and have breakout input/output boxes available through thunderbolt/usb4.
Why do I imagine this would have some annoying limitation for seemingly no reason, not get bugfix driver updates as often as it should, and it wouldn't work with a PC to be annoyingly non-platform agnostic so you can't just use it with any computer.

They've already been enough of a PITA by trying to force DriverKit (non-kext) drivers onto the pro audio manufacturers (although seem to have allowed kexts to stay for a bit now at least). I still can't seem to get rid of audio glitches on unlock at least with the DriverKit ones. Likely planning on uninstalling them and going back to kexts since they seemed more reliable. Used to work perfectly. Now it's mildly buggy after forcing manufacturers to jump through hoops to stay compatible.

But do either of them (Final Cut or Logic) on the iPad use AI? I am not the best video editor can AI do it for me if I get stuck? 😉

Let’s hope Apple rethinks the pricing strategy on this. Subscription are awesome for certain use cases but the ability to buy the software (even if it only comes with 1 year of updates) should always be an option.

The Affinity software model is perfect. Pay for the software and you own it! When the next big version comes out, pay for the upgrade and you own it or keep using the old version and miss out. Either way, your projects are not held hostage. This is the way.

This is the old way. The problem for developers was that a mature app (e.g. Word) doesn't really have any compelling new features to entice users of the old version to upgrade.

For example, have a copy of Adobe Acrobat X from ~2010. I use it in a very limited way for something that non-Adobe PDF software can't readily do. Keeping this around saves me a bunch in subscription fees which Adobe must HATE. Then again, there is no cost to them in me using software that they wrote years ago and haven't patched or updated?

Anyone tried iPad Logic yet? Does it have full support for tempo changes and time signature changes? Or is it yet another toy for only making bad modern pop music?

as some one who does news as one of their day jobs - we all have well powered laptops for that task, or send the media back to the network or TV station for editors to work on there. so no, there isn't any benefit because really good solutions already exist. why on earth would you use inferior tools ? and FCP's miserable audio handling is also a pain.

the subscription is also a non-starter when perm lic NLE's exist. its DOA

Oh yeah that should work just fine. I upgraded my iPad and macbook in past month, I tend to do those every 4-5 years so it was time and I always go with the latest model. Indeed I am set for long time LOL. My iphone is only thing I update annually although this year I really love my 14 ProMax so gonna wait for the iPhone 14 ProMax/Ultra LOL

Have fun
