thanks, that makes sense.

are these versions usable for an everyday OS?

i know its the first version, but can i use this on my mbp as my main OS? thanks guys!

I really, really wouldn't recommend it - it's the first preview version so will probably have loads of bugs in it and won't be feature-complete.
I'm hoping I can install it in a Fusion VM, but failing that it will go onto a separate partition so I can dual boot when I want to try it out

Websites are still built for low dpi screens. You will get sharper text and general layout but any images/icons/decorations will look like thumbnails.

Res independence on the web needs full CSS3, SVG, and faster broadband to work.

I've developed web apps for the iPhone. If you don't size your graphics using px, they will display at the resolution of the original image.

Your other points, I'll grant you, but I also shouldn't have restricted my post to just web pages. Local/native apps, same thing. I think the world is ready for a resolution independent Mac OS, it's just that the hardware isn't there (by Apple's choice) and it certainly isn't a trivial problem to solve without building a new OS from the ground up.

I expect this will cost the usual $129 and, if I don't hear any horror install stories, I'll probably buy. Lots of good stuff in the new OS.

I'm still considering suing Apple for the $2000 in iTunes purchases I lost when my first snow leopard install destroyed my iMac.

As long as it isn't some watered down Windows Home Server type of thing.

I kinda hope it is a home server. I hate the fact you can't use a single photo (Aperture or iPhoto), or iTunes library with multiple machines. I would buy a separate piece of hardware to just be the data repository for my house, if there was software that allowed more than one machine to access it at a time.

I know iTunes has the home sharing thing.... that is just a step in the right direction.

Also, what happened to Dashboard? Is that going to be eliminated in Lion? If so, what will our dedicated dashboard buttons on our keyboards be used to operate- launchpad or mission control?

If you look at the top left of this screenshot you can see Dashboard still there

I see there's new Filevault. Any of you developers know if it will back up Filevault volumes in real time, or is it that retarded system currently uses where it only backs up at logout???

Just call them up, explain to them, and they'll queue up all your purchases for you to re-download. They don't advertise that, but they do let you do it.

Because it will help put nerdy IT guys -- who once thought they were "God" -- out of jobs.

Considering how many people are still clueless when it comes to computers, I don't see that happening any time soon. And don't forget, all those VPs and CEOs have to have somebody do their installs for them.

Think it will be hard not to buy it on day one and be a guinea pig to see how well it works and stable it is. Looking good!

I would, but it was my first transition from 10.5 to 10.6 that made me start using Time Machine. Yeah, I know...

Few initial points of interest:

  • Few graphical anomolies on my Macbook w/ GMA965
  • Window resizing from all corners/edges is awesome
  • You now have to scroll (via gestures) in the opposite direction as you're used to. To scroll down, you put your fingers at the bottom of the trackpad, and move them up.
  • UI looks great. All the little improvements and polish really shine through.

With the new macbook pro out, we dont see any ssd...is it because Apple havent fully prefected it yet to increase preformance? Any thoughts?

Just by an SSD w/ a Sandforce controller. Problem solved. And if you don't buy one w/ it, well, you get what you deserve. Don't waste your money one an SSD that doesn't have it!

You are correct. Amazing how much people still don't know on a basic level, but this will push some unnecessary admins out the door. It's a good start.

Aqua is still mentioned as being the UI. Enhancements such as pop over windows and iOS scrollbars are listed

Apple will still probably change the UI away from Aqua, but they aren't going to let that slip in a developer beta. It will appear in the final version.

The closest example we have of what the new UI will be is probably found in recent apps such as the FaceTime Mac app, which is NOT aqua.

"- In 10.7, windows may be resized from all edges and corners, and the resize indicator has been removed."

Holy Schmidt!

*runs outside to check for horsemen and frogs raining from the sky*

OMG and four corner window resizing! Now THAT's innovation! :p

No, it's not innovation. And no one would claim it was innovation. What it is is a fix for a long standing pain in the ass aspect about OS X. One that people are happy will finally be rectified.

Thankfully they changed gesture scrolling to match iOS.

That might be an issue. :|

I'm super excited that Apple is apparently designing their desktop/laptop OS for computers with Solid State Drives.

Yeah, all this stuff will run on hard drives, but it's clear that they focused on SSDs and asked "how can we use this technology to its highest potential?"

This is great, is anyone else as focused on that as Apple is? I'm betting no one else is quite yet.

Did all your apps stay and do they work as normal? Also, apparently it's locked to your iTunes account???

Is the scrolling direction thing configurable for old-fogies who are afraid of change? :)

Not possible now. They are not going to change from AQUA at least in lion. Mac OS 11 might have an overhaul but not in Lion.

Look at iLife/Mail, etc. They cannot fool the developers this way. This is the first real build and nothing is going to be inconsistent from now on.
