All Apps must now go through the App Store and be signed by Apple to run on Mac OS 10.8 Mountain Lion.

You are incorrect... There are screenshots of the Gatekeeper settings. One of the settings allows any software to be installed... outside of the App Store and unsigned. I think Gatekeeper is brilliant if it always includes the option to disable it... and, again, Mountain Lion provides that option.

Nice little surprise :) Looks nice. Gatekeeper might be turned off for me though. Will have to look at what the laptops looks like at summers end. Might do a complete upgrade :)

Yes but how many people will disable that. Power users yes, but Apple is selling to the dumbed down mass market now.

You didn't read.

The default option is for an app to be on MAS or signed. Read that: OR not AND.

In addition my understanding is that it doesn't stop you from installing from unsigned sources, it merely warns you about doing it.

And?

It's a good thing - I'd much rather that the people I know who are less tech savvy go through someplace like the Mac App Store, where all programs are approved and verified, then to just go out and download every old thing.

If you care about it at all, you'll disable it.

If you don't, then you won't even realize it (plus there's an option to over ride the Gatekeeper settings on a per app basis so *if* you did have something, it doesn't block you completely).

what the heck is an Apple Infrastructure Engineer?? does that make you a super genius?? ha ha :D I was an Apple genius for 2 years, now I teach and am also the School Technology manager, does that mean I can call myself an Apple Education Infrastructure Engineer as well, I do maintain all the computers in the school, Windows and Apple!

I don't agree at all with 10.5 being vista, Leopard was fine we tons of new features, sounds to me like you will never be satisfied with what they release

I'm glad to pay 29.00 for a bump in performance and new features, nothing wrong with that

exactly, ive paid $49.99 for video converter apps

anyone calling a $29.99 OSXs Vista obviously never paid $399 for a dud OS

I build infrastructures, you reset iPods.

Open GL 3.2+ support? HFS+ replaced with a better F.S.(shame ZFS never made it)? True Multi-display support for those who actually use systems for professional grade work? SAMBA/VPN issues resolved? Better server support? Under the hood improvements???

No, we have GAME CENTER! And look, Twitter integration!!! This is the best update EVER.

/sarcasm

Seriously guys, Apple even clearly states "iPad inspired." 90% of you Mac users came in through the iOS portal now, which means Apple wants more iOS consumer driven features for Mac's and couldn't give two ****'s about those who have been using OS X for over a decade for work (you know, that thing we do for making money to live in a capitalist-driven society). It's amazing, looking at the last beta release for "Snow Leopard" (yup, still have them all the way back to "Tiger") and the current "M.L." how much the focus has shifted to consumer/iOS platforms. This may be great for the 90% of you that use Mac's for emailing, "twittering", surfing the web, but for those who have 2, even four displays, use OS X for film editing, digital photography, design, etc. it's a shame.

warning:

Installing this will mess with your bootcamp partition. You won't be able to boot windows anymore then. It's there when you hold alt at boot, but selecting it just freezes it  Just did that. Neer again gonna install beta software just for needing around with it…

edit: OS X was on SSD in iMac, Windows on a partition on the HDD.
Does anyone have an idea how to fix that? :/

Damn, this was awfully quick. What happened to slowing down the releases?

Since mountain lion is technically a puma and vice versa, would it be safe to say that this is the last of the OS X series?

Master of none!

So you think desktop integration with mobile devices is a step backwards? And that user interfaces which greatly speed up work and reduce errors are a bad thing?

Also I think you are forgetting that these are not mobile interfaces on a desktop, they were redesigned for a desktop. I guarantee if these features came out on Mac OS first there wouldn't be nearly the amount of complainers.

I don't get why people are against having the best of both worlds.

Have you ever heard the expression 'jack of all trades, master of none'?
I think that's likely to apply here too.
I've been an Apple user since I used OS7 on a LC475 and have been an Apple fan ever since.
As well as my Macs I use an iPhone, iPad and an iPod, but I agree entirely that implementing everything found on a portable device into a desktop interface is a backward step. It's doesn't 'simplify' anything as is claimed, it just makes it messy.
If I wish to tweet I launch Twitter, if I wish to read emails I launch Mail.
I don't wish to have iCloud attempting (google style), to set everything up for me on launch, nor do I wish to get 'alerts' on my desktop - that's just interrupting and distracting me from my work (which is what I do on my Macs).
I shouldn't have to 'deactivate', 'uninstall' or 'work around' the things I don't need - that's exactly why I always hated using a PC!
Apple keep offering a solutions to problems that don't exist and often create some by doing so.
I'd rather see a reintroduction of colour sidebar icons in the finder (something genuinely useful that they REMOVED from Lion), that slows my productivity than all these additional 'gadgets' like mission control and game centre.
Apple really are starting to lose the plot IMO and if they are not careful they will start losing their customers too.

No, it might mess with your bootcamp partion, you might not be able to boot into Windows.

And yes you should not install beta software for the sole purpose of poking around in it, you take these risks of messing up everytime you install unfinished software.

I was unable to boot into Windows 7 when I first tried Windows 8 Developer Preview, as it changed the drive names around meaning it couldn't find the drive Windows 7 was on, as I prepared adequately with backups, I managed to resolve the issue with no damage.

So you have to be a "registered" developer to build your own source code now ? (by registed, I mean get a certificate that's free for now).

So first it was "how am I supposed to sign something I build from source." I tell you how, and you regress to "well that is stupid."

Apple is providing a means to do it. You don't have to pay, and the process is simple (built right into Xcode).

That doesn't even start to make sense. Mandatory app signing can never work, it always needs to remain an option so that users can opt-out and use unsigned binaries. Otherwise, your computing freedom is compromised.

Well, that seems to be an option...

It seems you just want to complain. I for one am thrilled at this development as it suggests I won't be losing control of my OS.

Really? Try releasing a product that doesn't allow Corp. users to login to there computers. In fact try releasing a Beta that does work and then release 10.7, 10.7.1, and 10.7.2 that doesn't allow it.

Reading comprehension here is so crappy. I don't go home and play WOW and fiddle around with Safari. I manage a huge corp. IT infrastructure. My needs are different from all of yours yet equally important. Try turning on the TV for the network I work for and remember all of that was produced on computers I manage.

Edit:

As I suspected most of the feedback posted on Apple Dev's site the last 2 years are being implemented. For example Mail Archive folders are now separate. Much cleaner looking and much easier to manage archives from one location if you have multiple mail boxes.

Erm... AD Integration works absolutely fine in 10.7, 10.7.1 and 10.7.2 so I don't know what you're having a go at people for.

No... you have to be registered to have the app signed by Apple. You can write whatever app you want, and people can install it and use it... even on Mountain Lion. What don't you understand about this?
