while i am quite excited to see a new version of OS X (here's hoping some of the annoying bugs with lion are squashed!) I would of also like to of seen a more refined version of lion, instead of releasing a new version of the OS, maybe add these features into a update of Lion, Lion will probably be killed now at 10.7.4 or 10.7.5. I am currently typing this from a 10.8 partition on my iMac and I have to say it is nice, however I see this more as a Lion 2.0 instead of a new OS X all together, this will be like 10.5 to 10.6 the changes won't be HUGE. But they will hopefully be enjoyable.

I expect iPad3 to be able run this. no more need for a separate os. Macbook pro will be iPad3 + Air-like dockstation

Anyone notice the lack of MacBook Pros in the release preview video? Also can't wait for some new "I'm a Mac, and Im a PC" commercials. Windows 8 wont know what hit them.

True Multi-display support for those who actually use systems for professional grade work?

What's false about the current multi-display support ? I find it works much better than Linux' convulted solution or Windows' "I refuse to let you change your primary monitor".

If you're going to say "but fullscreen apps!" then don't bother, I know about that bug, and I don't see how that results in a "less professional" system.

Stealth tax?

...That said I hope this isn't too expensive, a new OS every 18 months or so at even £25 will quickly mount up to a stealth tax in an already expensive environment.

You're kidding, right?!? £25 once a year for a major OS release is going to break you? Stealth tax? I do hope this is a joke. How about skipping every other release and paying £25 once every two or three years? Will you be okay?

Fix lion before you release mountain lion!!!!

Why Apple???? Why?????

Lion is such a buggy OS in my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro and as a result I had to return to Snow Leopard. Lion very much made my MacBook Pro the most unstable computer I ever had, after 7 months of frustration, I returned to Snow Leopard (just 2 short days ago) and was expecting to re-upgrade to OSX Lion sometime later this year when I expected the OS to reach maturity. I have been researching why Lion is so unstable in my mid-2010 MacBook Pro and seen that it all comes down to the nvidia drivers Apple shipped with Lion along with a faulty OpenGL framework and Automatic Graphics Switching APIs.

I think that Apple has gone relentless with all this "upgrade" craze I mean, were are back to the days of the Classic Mac OS X (10.1-10.3) where upgrades came in like every eight months. Now, I am afraid that Apple will never fix Lion in order to force the user base to buy into Mountain Lion, not to mention that Apple will tell current SL users to move forward or stay behind. I'll be fine with Mountain Lion if it is a more refined OS than Lion, but the degree of refinement has to be in par with the levels set by Snow Leopard when compared to Leopard. What I really hope is that at least Apple commits to Security and Safari updates until Summer of next year.

So far it seems like an "iOS App Pack" for Lion. They could have put those apps on the App Store as optional things to be honest. I like the notifications though, they'll be useful.

Incremental yearly updates are a good idea though. New stuff constantly being added.

Did not see this one coming.
This is true.

Yet I'm very excited that Apple has recognized the "new users" they've attracted with Lion have found it, along with iCloud, to be full of the requisite Apple Eye Candy, yet less intuitive & more confusing than Apples prior efforts have been.

An early announcement of it's replacement will encourage people not to abandon Apple, especially over the confusion created by iCloud.

This is win / win for everyone :)

I like the other stuff, but if I got this (which I probably would not), I'd do my best to disable/delete the Twitter and Game Center stuff.

So first it was "how am I supposed to sign something I build from source." I tell you how, and you regress to "well that is stupid."

Apple is providing a means to do it. You don't have to pay, and the process is simple (built right into Xcode).

So every user who wants to build software from source for their own personal use should get a certificate and sign stuff ? Why ?

Yes, sorry, it is stupid. It's a none solution. Not removing the ability to run unsigned software, like it is in Mountain Lion's Gatekeeper is what needs to remain in future releases also.

Well, that seems to be an option...

May I remind you of your original post I was replying to at this point :

Apple has been pushing app signing since Snow Leopard. If anything, they will remove the ability to install unsigned apps in a future release.

Which I personally think is fine, if they are providing developers with a simple and free mechanism for signing.

Now please stop moving goalposts. If you really meant that mandatory app signing is something that you think is fine, argue that point and show us why. For now, you have failed to show me how the removal of our computing freedom is something I should be "fine" with.

I wasn't commenting on the current Mountain Lion situation, I already said as long as the default is sensible, it's ok and as long as the option to run unsigned is there, it's ok. You're saying that it would be fine to leave out the 3rd option.

I really question why you think that's fine.

The article mentioned 100 new features. I'm guessing that like Lion, they only mentioned the iOS stuff even though the update has a lot of other improvements.

I'm still mad that my Leopard doesn't have a "copy and rename" or "copy and merge" option. It's one of the two things I like in Windows. They quietly added it to Snow Leopard or Lion I think.

i cant understand why still Apple can't make Address book something better, for example:

- displaying a map picture next to each address
- making the relatives fields linked to eachother instead of plain text, so that when I type in someone as a father of another, that person will automatically show up as son of that other person as well. Preferably this would also be linked into a all-new family tree/friends tree-application.
- allow phone numbers to have a separate choice of country, so that country code is automatically added correctly but somehow separately.

They shouldn't call Windows "PC". It makes Windows seem mainstream. Macs are PCs too, but a lot of people consider "PC"s Windows because it is the most common.

Have been using it for 1.5 hours now, this is certainly the most release ready first DP I've seen. Basically everything is working, but crashes here and there happen. But Finder is more stable than Lion's first DP or SL's first beta. Not many changes to Finder it seems, you can now twitter pictures from quicklook for example, which is very convenient.

No... you have to be registered to have the app signed by Apple. You can write whatever app you want, and people can install it and use it... even on Mountain Lion. What don't you understand about this?

I understand it fine, read the context. We were discussing a future where Apple removes the option to run unsigned binaries. He simply moved the goalposts to make it look like I didn't understand Gatekeeper.

I have no problem with Gatekeeper as it is announced, if a little annoyed at the current default option (I think the default should be to run anything and let the user tighten security on his own).

I've seen your posts. I know all too well ;)

Ok:

- Finder bar for more than one display (with four displays, "SecondBar" doesn't cut it). Makes it a ***** when editing.

- Graphics rendering and lack of FULL OpenGL support (3.2?? C'mon apple)

- R.I.

- Exposé lacking "all windows" when running multi-displays is not intuitive or productive.

I've read your comments on "Mission Control" in such threads as "Mission Control Replacement", so I know your stance, you seem to enjoy putting people down who have valid points:

That's because at this point, there's only you and the other "whiners" left in this thread.

Side note: Interesting as you seem to be the only person in that thread who was aggressive, defensive and who's comments most didn't agree with, then again if you don't agree do so civilly, otherwise it makes you seem like a bully
...

People need to learn to let go. I'll stop there, replying to you is useless, you're not changing my mind and I'm obviously not going to change yours.

This is the only point I'll address, because you can't seem to let go of "professional" (neither Snow Leopard or Lion are professional, one isn't moreso than the other like you put it, that's the ridiculous notion in all your posts).

So I'm not rehashing this issue with you when you've hashed it out with many others. :)

Open GL 3.2+ support? HFS+ replaced with a better F.S.(shame ZFS never made it)? True Multi-display support for those who actually use systems for professional grade work? SAMBA/VPN issues resolved? Better server support? Under the hood improvements???

No, we have GAME CENTER! And look, Twitter integration!!! This is the best update EVER.

/sarcasm

Seriously guys, Apple even clearly states "iPad inspired." 90% of you Mac users came in through the iOS portal now, which means Apple wants more iOS consumer driven features for Mac's and couldn't give two ****'s about those who have been using OS X for over a decade for work (you know, that thing we do for making money to live in a capitalist-driven society). It's amazing, looking at the last beta release for "Snow Leopard" (yup, still have them all the way back to "Tiger") and the current "M.L." how much the focus has shifted to consumer/iOS platforms. This may be great for the 90% of you that use Mac's for emailing, "twittering", surfing the web, but for those who have 2, even four displays, use OS X for film editing, digital photography, design, etc. it's a shame.

i agree with u 100% i do videos and edit dem using snow leopard i havnt used lion but apple is losing it too me im scared dey are goin to drop ODD in the next macbook pros and if dey do im not goin to upgrade my early 2011 13" MBP but go and buy a late 2011 MBP and downgrade it too snow leopard

Why has this been given a new title?! It's basically an addition of small apps and they're calling it 10.9? I was hoping Apple would steer away from the iOS copying and focus more on improving the desktop experience, since laptops aren't iPads.

Instead we get "reminders", "notes" and "game centre" and this is supposed to be a new entry into OSX? These could have been delivered through the App Store! Oh Apple.. you really are losing the plot.

Why are you asking if you're going to answer your own question?

Because a new Lion feature does not break Multi-monitor support. It simply does not integrate with it. You didn't have full screen applications before Lion (in the way Lion does them), well, you still don't on Lion if you can't live with this bug/feature.

Lion's and Snow Leopard's multi monitor is the same. Same as it was in Leopard too. If SL and Leopard's multi monitor wasn't broken for you, it's not in Lion either.

That's my point.

You seem to be worried about the inconvenience. I can't deny that, but the process is simple and free.

I am merely saying if they did do it, it would not be the end of the world. You should also take into consideration the context my original quote took place in.

- Finder bar for more than one display (with four displays, "SecondBar" doesn't cut it). Makes it a ***** when editing.

That's how it always was. Same on Windows where the taskbar is on only the primary monitor.

- Graphics rendering and lack of FULL OpenGL support (3.2?? C'mon apple)

Same as it was on all other platforms (in fact, SL had much poorer OpenGL support).

Again, nothing Lion broke.

- Exposé lacking "all windows" ...

Something not found on any other OS. So really, no OSes are "professional" now ?

I think the original argument was that Lion made OS X non-professional, you're just listing a bunch of pet peeves you have with OS X in general, not with Lion. Way to move those goalposts.
