Possibly OSX 10.8 to compete with Windows 8? :)

I really hope OSX 10.8 doesn't break anything major. Apple seems to have a bad habit of changing core APIs between versions.

I tested all my apps, they are all working, including the ones which install kexts.

And?

It's a good thing - I'd much rather that the people I know who are less tech savvy go through someplace like the Mac App Store, where all programs are approved and verified, then to just go out and download every old thing.

If you care about it at all, you'll disable it.

If you don't, then you won't even realize it (plus there's an option to over ride the Gatekeeper settings on a per app basis so *if* you did have something, it doesn't block you completely).

True even the system software update function is moving to the App Store.

No updating then for you right away ;)

The Apple apps are usually compatible right away. Generally Adobe apps are compatible right away too, but sometimes you will need to wait for a patch. This usually happens very quickly. I think an official patch for Photoshop was out within a week of Lion launching, I forget though.

EDIT: Actually it appears Photoshop worked straight away during Lions release.
I should be safe then? I'm not sure if it's worth upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion though, I guess I will decide that at the time.

Yep you should be fine. There will be a site that pops up (it always does) closer to the release of Mountain Lion that shows what apps are known to be compatible and what ones are known to have problems.

Exactly. So why are they adding unnecessary apps and cluttering the OS even more? It's beginning to look more and more childish with every release.

Unnecessary? You do realize that you are not the only target for OS X development, right? You never actually have to open the childish Notes app or the childish Contacts app or the childish Reminders app, but other people do appreciate apps that sync directly with their iOS counterparts and maintain feature parity.

Also, what were the other hundreds of secret updates with Lion? Could you expand since I have yet to see any.

Here are hundreds of features that Apple chose to highlight for consumers.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html

You will have to ask a developer for a list of APIs and new technologies available in Lion.

Ummm, I believe it was you who brought up the issue of removing or lacking features

Nope, it wasn't. I was replying to someone who was specifically talking about Snow Leopard having "professional" features that Lion removed to make it less professional.

I will forgive you for not following the quotes trail.

I pointed one out to you on the very page where you posted this. The NSRegularExpression class.

Hmm. I just got my first Mac. MBP early 2011. I also just joined the Dev program. Can't wait to try this out. I just wonder if it is better to run this in the VM or using Bootcamp?
Thanks Apple!

Install it on an external hard drive or partition your internal hard and install it there. Once installed select it from system preferences or boot while holding down the option key and select ML.

I've read through part of the thread but its expanding so fast ....

Any word on if it's got the old expose or something that enhances mission control to act more like it...? Or something to make dual monitors more useful with full screen apps (you know, like two at once or being able to actually use both monitors or being able to put an app full screen on the screen next to you ..... )?

Noticed this about the Gatekeeper icon, compared with the icon for Microsoft Security Essentials.

Hmmm... Cupertino, start your photocopiers! ;)

I'm starting to think this may be the last Mac OS X update that will support the Core 2. Quoted from Macworld about AirPlay mirroring (Apple says that only Macs with second-generation Intel Core processors can use this feature.) Out of all the features of Mountain Lion this is the one I wanted to use most and I can't, just like when they pulled the same thing with AirPlay mirroring and the first gen iPad.

First generation Core processors were simply called Core (i.ex. Core duo) Second gen were Core 2 and now we have third gen (Core i)

So Core 2 should be supported

What do you mean. Cheers :p

What do I mean? When you buy an iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Apple TV you get free major iOS releases. It is true that usually Apple only gives two years of free iOS releases for iDevices. Since Apple is on a yearly Mac OS X release schedule that could be an indication that they are going to match what they do for iOS to Mac OS X. I suspect that the two year rule may not apply wrt Mac hardware.

Yeah I see, thanks for clarifying. :)

I think if Apple did go the free Mac OS X model, to sell more Mac hardware, that would drive Balmer to buy more chairs to throw. :D

According to the Intel ads, the "second generation" is the Core i3/i5/i7 family of processors. I thought it was weird too when they called it that, as if they forgot about the "Core" line. I guess the Core/Core2 are first gen, and the "i" are the second.

If legacy compatibility is an issue for you, don't upgrade. Very simple.

That works for a while. But my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro aren't going to last forever. Moving away from Snow Leopard would cause me grief, no matter what — now the question is, to what. Lion and Mountain Lion offer no compelling benefits in return, and with new "iOS X" features being restricted to App Store software, it's impossible to ignore the writing on the wall. Apple Inc. (formerly Apple Computer Inc.) is not interested in my market segment, so I need to plan accordingly.

Lion is still slow and filled with bugs that haven't been fixed yet. It just came out in July of 2011 and they're already going to release a new OS. Unless it's dirt cheap I'm not paying for it.
