That works for a while. But my Mac Pro and Macbook Pro aren't going to last forever. Moving away from Snow Leopard would cause me grief, no matter what — now the question is, to what. Lion and Mountain Lion offer no compelling benefits in return, and with new "iOS X" features being restricted to App Store software, it's impossible to ignore the writing on the wall. Apple Inc. (formerly Apple Computer Inc.) is not interested in my market segment, so I need to plan accordingly.

If you can do that without whining that'd be great.

As with any upgrade, I need to see the 'dead app' table to deterimine if it is worth the time and effort to upgrade. I am still running SL on my Mac Pro because it would cost me 3x the cost to upgrade some older apps I use than I would pay for SL.

Lion is still slow and filled with bugs that haven't been fixed yet. It just came out in July of 2011 and they're already going to release a new OS. Unless it's dirt cheap I'm not paying for it.

Not sure what hardware your Mac computers have but Lion is anything but slow on any of my Mac computers even my lowly 2.0 GHz Mac-Mini. I did clean installs of Lion. I do agree that Lion has bugs that need to be addressed. I don't think that Apple is all of a sudden not going to do anymore 10.7.x updates.

First generation Core processors were simply called Core (i.ex. Core duo) Second gen were Core 2 and now we have third gen (Core i)

So Core 2 should be supported

No need to speculate, the list of supported hardware was posted on this thread. It mainly boils down to hardware that can run the 64 bit kernel only, Core 2 machines may or may not meet the criteria.

Is this confirmed anywhere ? I can't see it on Apple's page.

In the Daring Fireball article, may not be listed in Apple's documentation yet.

Think I read it somewhere from a link in one of the articles linked in the main story / either that or just quoting another post, this morning as a long time ago, from my POV. I hope the notification API is open to non MAS apps. It would seriously suck if it was a closed API to MAS.

I don't get it why people still complain. "I bought Lion only a few days ago", "It's only an iOS update pack", "I have the fear my photoshop isn't running", "howling about rosetta"

This is a developer preview and only for testing machines! You can install every Application you want. Gatekeeper is just for the new not-so-much-into-technical-details people who got to Mac OSX via the iOS success.

Lion is a great OS and i don't know why people want that Apple should reinvent OSX. It's stable and has a great usability it just lacks a few modern features (like iMessage and Notification Center) and now they give you Mountain Lion. Of course it won't be a free update, but I think it won't cost more than Lion costs.

You can expect deeper OS changes maybe with OS11, but why should they change it when it's good.

And hopefully, Apple respects our computing freedom more than you apparently do.

Equating the signing of App certificates as the end of computer freedom is a bit dramatic wouldn't you say?

Let me get this straight. First of all your arguing about something that is completely hypothetical . Second, you have the audacity to use hyperbole to demonstrate your fear of that hypothetical situation? Meanwhile, your adversary has calmly addressed all of your concerns point by point.

The most meaningful being that you can probably run your source applications in a development environment without the need for signed certificates, in this future hypothetical, hyperbolic universe.

All your doing is dramatizing a theoretical inconvenience for you as a developer, without considering the potential benefits as a software user.

Wonder who won this little tiff?

I'm on it now, the most striking thing so far is safari has a chrome like search bar

That's nice. How do you find it overall? Is it stable? Do the popular 3rd party apps have any compatibility issues? Are Notes and Reminders working?

Thanks!

I don't go home and play WOW and fiddle around with Safari. I manage a huge corp. IT infrastructure. My needs are different from all of yours yet equally important.

They're not equally important to Apple Computer Inc. Didn't you take the hint from XServe, FCP, etc.?

Then I'll wait before I pass judgment. I know why iCloud is limited to MAS apps only (makes sense, Apple doesn't want 3rd parties to play around with its servers without having reviewed the apps that do it), but for the notification center, it makes little sense.

If they do end up limiting notification center to MAS only, it goes to show that Apple is heading in a direction where OS X will not be friendly to non-MAS applications eventually.

Nope, because it is. Requiring end-users to get certificates to build software from source is adding a step and could even run afoul of certain open source licenses.

Yes, because the poster made the hypothesis and said he was "fine with that". It's the "fine with that" part I took exception to, as I've pointed out time and again.

Two features I'm so happy to finally see, searching within Launchpad, just type and it filters - and in the finder you can move 'devices' back up to the top like it used to be!

Does AirPlay mirroring actually currently work?

Just tried and get the error "Please update the AirPlay device to a newer version."

I have the latest Apple TV 2 with the latest firmware. What gives?

it will probably require Apple TV 3 ;) and i just read that some content will be blacked out (there goes my hope for Hulu on a big screen) due to right concerns

I was reffering to Gatekeeper. It's good that they make the Mac Appstore and that every User has a central point to get new software. It's great for 90% of the Mac User and the system is more stable and secure and the get more useres because of the simplicity of a Mac. The also give the "Pro" users full access with no restrictions so It's a win-win situation for all Mac users and Apple (because the iphone/iPad only people may consider to buy a Mac because they are not that different anymore).

It's good to see the Lion Vista beta coming to an end.
Lots of unhappy campers with Lion.
Progress is magic.:apple:

Absolutely! Unhappy/retired campers even. And so far I don't see anything about their fixing Lion's major pitfalls, or even just giving us bloody options! Nay the only thing mentioned is "Reminders doesn't even have preferences" - oh no!! That's the main problem with Lion - Apple know best, and tends to be wrong :(. Say no to autosave/versions, no to resume, no to mission control.

Someone said in the Kodak lawsuit thread it is ironic that Apple is getting so Big Brother like. Here's more.

It's not requiring anything at all. A developer can still make their own software without a certificate from Apple and distribute it themselves the same as they always do.

The only difference is that if someone that has Gatekeeper on, they won't be able to install it without right-clicking and explicitly allowing it.

I don't get it - what is wrong with those things? Autosave and versions are wonderful and mission control, once you adjust to it, is quite nice too. Why are those "wrong"?

Probably because they are either ancient (which is common in Macs, unfortunately) or 64-bit drivers were never written for the GPUs.

Not that ancient, but a line needs to be drawn somewhere, not just CPU architecture, those same machines can run Lion in 64bit quite well, they should probably run Mountain Lion decently, apple should put an option to reduce eye candy, i always did it in windows

Wow. How many times does he have to post that he is talking about a hypothetical future praised by another poster where all apps are required to be signed?

That's why people are complaining. Now that I've gotten over the "changes" in Lion that're radically new Mac's and the bugs affecting me have disappeared through patches and new hardware...I'm warming up to Lion. It's been difficult.

It's just...new stuff....in a community like the Mac Community where people are quite religious about things tends to be a big deal.
