If you change "surface studio" to "iMac" it sounds like a Windows user in 2003. You know, back when it was impossible to think of a scenario where Microsoft wasn't the #1 most profitable tech company. Talking paperclips, emojis. Next thing we'll have Schiller channelling Ballmer... Oh wait he already does.

Except the Surface Studio *starts* at $3000. Twice as much as an iMac. Twice as much as the new 13in Macbook Pro. And for non-illustrators or photo pros, not a compelling advantage.

Emojis? I guess the similarity is that they're illustrations? Apple didn't create those, they're just supporting a Unicode standard that has become part of how people communicate now, for better or worse.

The raise to wake with my finger on the home button is awesome. And I'm finding that our family is using the latest addition to iMessage features frequently, like the new "like" function. Swipe unlock is so "yesterday " lol.
I liked it at first but eventually turned raise-to-wake off because my iPhone 6splus and SE were turning on constantly in my purse and the SE seemed to be doing so in my pockets, as well. Battery life was starting to take a hit.

There is not a whole lot about iOS 10 that I like, sadly. I definitely want to roll my SE back to the last version of 9. For the first time I'm thinking of jail breaking to do so, after reading that another forum member did it. But I'll wait until all the revised versions of 10 are in before making that drastic a decision. Meanwhile I keep hoping I'll eventually get used to it and like it. I refuse to put it on my iPad mini 4, though. My iPad runs slow enough as it is. I don't need it lagging like my iPhones have done since 10.

Today I learned that ios users are just as bad as windows phone users complaining about the fact an update is bringing new additions to the ecosystem.

You may be new here but if you have spend some time you would realize that this place is full of whiners.
By the way, these new wallpapers seem to be available for iPhone 7 only as I don't have them on my updated iPhone 6s.

A non-emoji question:
Does anyone know if there is a reason why iPhone models other than the 7 could not handle the new wallpapers? I'm trying not to jump the gun here but it feels like a really petty move by Apple. I'm hoping there's a legit reason for it.

The same reason why the Nexus 6P didn't get the fingerprint gestures despite it using the same fingerprint sensor . To force you to buy their latest hardware

What I don't get is why people seem to be so hung up on new emoji? I don't believe it has taken much effort or time away from anything else to put these in this build. They are just implamenting Unicode's new ones, Apple haven't developed the new ones.

I also take it as a good sign from Apple. You would imagine they intended something like this to have been included in the 10.0 release. I'm going to look at it (well I'm not really because I honestly couldn't care about updated emoji - as much as I enjoy using them), that now they had time / ability to put it into 10.2 whilst other things have been fixed and working on other bits. What you get in an update is what you get. You have your opinion but unfortunatly, in the grand scheme, matters very little. When they have a fix for the things 'you' consider important they will be implamanted - not before, can you not just be happy you get updates and not just left hanging?

Can it not just be as simple - as they were the marketing for the new iPhones so they are only for the new iPhone models? Does it really need to be as convoluted as Apple conspiring against older models over a wallpaper? What a way to get people to buy a new iPhone, "make this wallpaper exclusive to the new ones, people will be forced to upgrade their phones now!"

I happen to like iOS 10. My wife's 5s runs fine on the latest version and I'm on 10.2. I wish I could install it on my iPad 2. As far as I can tell Battery life doesn't seem to be affected with raise to wake.

It most definitely affects battery as even slight movements seem to turn the screen on.Both the sensor and screen will hit battery life.It would have been better had they done it so that just placing the finger on the home button unlocks the device

Yup.Thats the Tim Cook effect.Ever since he took over, Apple has been all about emojis and watchbands and "courage"

I like the emojis and am glad they have the "courage" and devoted their staff of 60,000 solely toward crafting them. Sells more phones and helps keep the profits high. My aw does need a new watch band that I just bought. /s

Technically moving your phone affects battery life, but not to be pedantic It doesn't affect battery life to the extent I care enough to turn it off.

Why "tricked"?
Tricked because I feel they want you to do it and tricked because I never agreed to it.
It came up after install and said it was sending me a text with a code.
The next thing I purchased sent another code to type in.

I never requested it, and now to go back, they are going to force me to change my password again (I just did 2 weeks ago).
Not looking forward to doing the many device/itune world tour with password changes again.

im so sick of getting the middle finger from Tim and the Apple board. Emojis!? Why don't they just include a pacifier in the box

And basically almost none of that applies to this update where emojis are just one small thing that was updated simply based on the Unicode standards.

Who still wants 32GB of RAM in the MBP, now we have new Emojis, I am so happy.
Because an iOS update could do something about computer hardware. Seriously.

So why focus on some small unimportant item that was updated among everything else that is much more meaningful in the beta?

I got a prompt to set it up too after a recent update, but was able to use the skip option that was provided without any issues.

I wonder if it's affecting my phones more noticeably because of where they are in their battery life. But your wife's iPhone doesn't seem affected so I don't know.

Can anybody weight on how 10.2 is working on their phones? Does it seem stable? Any noticeable difference with battery life? Any bugs that could be a showstopper?

It would be great if we could maintain the thread on topic.

Thanks!

No, but they rather get people working on hardware then spending time on this nonsens

Not sure how iOS updates are nonsense. Or how those working on software would have any impact on those working on hardware.

I am talking on the time spend on wall papers, IImicons and other useless nonsens. The second question is a budget question as you can spend a dollar only once.

So while Microsoft is coming out with Surface Studio and such,Samsung reportedly moving to optical fingerprint sensors and Edge to Edge OLED with the highest screen to body ratio ever, you feel emojis and these iterative updates Apple is pushing out are the pinnacle of innovation?I certainly dont and my opinion is cemented by this article which reinforced my above post and which you no doubt skipped reading

Moving my phone may affect battery life but an additional sensor constantly turning my screen on and off with the screen being the major power guzzler will lower battery life significantly

One small thing?Thats the only major thing mentioned in the article. We just have more wallpapers, more Music sorting options and thats about it

Apple today seeded the first beta of an upcoming iOS 10.2 update to public beta testers for testing purposes, just one over one week after releasing the first major iOS 10 update, iOS 10.1, and one day after providing the iOS 10.2 beta to developers.

Beta testers who have signed up for Apple's beta testing program will receive the iOS 10 beta update over-the-air after installing the proper certificate on their iOS device.

Those who want to be a part of Apple's beta testing program can sign up to participate through the beta testing website, which gives users access to both iOS and macOS Sierra betas. Betas are not stable and include many bugs, so they should be installed on a secondary device.

iOS 10.2, as a major 10.x update, includes several new features to enhance iOS 10. New emoji have been added, introducing Unicode 9 characters like clown face, drooling face, selfie, face palm, fox face, owl, shark, butterfly, avocado, pancakes, croissant, and more, plus many profession emoji available in both male and female genders.

Apple has also updated the artwork on many existing emoji, adding detail and making them look less cartoonish and more realistic. In addition to new emoji, the 10.2 update includes new wallpaper, new Music sorting options, a new "Celebrate" Screen Effect," an option for preserving camera settings, a Videos widget, and more.

hopefully we'll start to see something brave... choice leads to more competition and more competition between apps will benefit us (the users)...

iOS needs to allow power users to do things without having to jailbreak their phones or iPads:
As a user I find iOS becoming more restrictive in stock form ... and while that's good for my mother to have something she can fire up and use without much cognitive load I suspect a lot of us are fans and would be willing to delve into a "here be dragons" part of the Settings menu to enable a bit more control (for instance I want to use Brave as my browser and Outlook as my mail/calendar/people app and not have to sync/duplicate everything just so I can call a contact ... so I have to use Android as my daily driver)

Exactly what does Microsoft computer and operating divisions have anything to do with iOS? As far as an optical fingerprint reader and oled you are definitely enforcing the stereotypical android spec hound of specs before function without having a glimmer of apples plans. emojis are giving the people what they want and is much safer than rushing to production. Ask Samsung. Yes, I don't read this stuff because on the Internet you can find talking points for anything; doesn't mean they are right or correct or reflect any type of majority opinion.

I am talking on the time spend on wall papers, IImicons and other useless nonsens. The second question is a budget question as you can spend a dollar only once.
Somehow in case of Apple the budget and dollars don't really seem like they would be any sort of a limiting factor.

The article points out a number of other things, and details of the update have even more to the update than that. So, yes, just going by article headlines and not really looking into things makes it easy to come up with random digs at something since spending some time actually looking into things requires some actual effort compared to coming up with (or really just parroting) essentially pointless memes.
