Yeah, the update sure is fantastic..... if it wouldn't have bricked my device. I am a paying Developer, tried to install iOS 4.2 Beta, unfortunately, it just wouldn't start, so I did the mistake to try to restore the old 3.2.2, which (of course), f*cked up my iPad completely. The classical 1015 (baseband version blah blah) came up and now its stuck in recovery mode without a chance of either going forth or back version-wise....... Soooooooooooooooooo frustrating!!

Mail busted on 3GS with 4.2 beta

I can no longer check my mail. Darn!

It starts to pull the # of #### and crashes on 8.

4.2 is awesome, makes the ipad what it was supposed to be.

Problems I've found so far are

  • twitter.app when quit asks for username and password every time
  • battery has been at 100% for a suspiciously long time now
  • When turning off, backlight sometimes stays on

everything else has worked spot on so far, and regardless of these problems, it's very, very nice.

read between the lines newbie. Plus, not every indie dev has enough cash for a dev/personal ipad.

Then don't come here and bitch. Apple makes it quite clear, as you know, that you are not supposed to install this unless you have a device dedicated to development.

So if you're on a devs beta testing list, why allow it to be installed on a device?
Also, What apple makes "quite clear" and the reality for a lot of indie devs is a different thing.

Also, your confrontational assine post is why this forum has gone from the premier mac community to the forum most likely to give users the doldrums. News posts, still good, community, freakin' terrible....

Plus, when did I bitch?

4.2 is awesome, makes the ipad what it was supposed to be.

For anyone else not sitting in Scrooge McDucks money pit that is putting this on their solo ipad, I'll list any issues I find thank you very much.

iOS 4.2 beta should only be installed on devices dedicated exclusively for iOS 4.2 beta testing. Do not install this software if you do not have a device dedicated exclusively for iOS 4.2 beta testing.

Have you tried RecBoot to bring it back to life? It's a simple app that forces an iphone out of recovery mode. Might be worth trying here. If it doesn;t work, try to update to 4.2 beta again, then try it.

Good Luck

from the developer page... as I am an "indie dev".

 I'm not arguing that it states that. Welcome to every beta ever, EVER, released ever.

I'm arguing with the fact that every indie dev has the $ to spend out on an ipad purely for dev purposes.

Of course people are going to put this on their only ipad, and of course on an enthusiast forum, people are going to get access, even if they pay the $100 or whatever for a dev account, and then post their thoughts in regards to the OS.... Is it really more legit when macrumors, TUAW, or Engadget does it???? They're not devs...sure they might have the money to have a "don't care if it explodes" ipad, but of course the enthusiasts are going to chomp at the bit to put this on their ipad....

get real....

Of course they will. But they should know that it could screw up their system. If you need the beta to get your apps ready you'll get along with something like messed up emails. It sucks but you didn't update just for fun. Everyone else should know that it's an DEVELOPER BETA and isn't supposed to be used for normal day-to-day-usage. But do as you please.

I've never beta tested before and am confused. A dev was gracious enough to add my UDID to his account but I don't know where I'm supposed to be looking to download 4.2

I installed XCode but it's not telling me anything either - is that only needed to install on iPhone? I'm looking to install 4.2 on an iPad.

I am registered with a developer account but haven't paid the $99, but from what I do understand it doesn't matter.

Can anyone give me some direction?

So if I'm a beta tester for a couple of different aps, I won't get that developer error if I update to 4.2?

The iPad is not going to get a retina display - that would require a 2048x1536 resolution 9.7" display. That doesn't exist yet and if it did it would be cost prohibitive. It's one thing to make a little 3.5" display 'retina' but it's another to do so with a 4x larger display. This is the same reason why there won't be any 'retina display' macs any time soon. My guess is that the earliest we could see an iPad with a 'retina display' is in two years time. Probably more.

Your math is wrong. The ipad is held much further from your eyes than an iPhone, so a much lower pixel density is "retina."

It's actually easy to upgrade iPhone 4 to iOS 4.2 beta (if you have a dev account):
http://trick77.com/2010/09/16/iphone-4-ios-4-2-beta-installation-error-itunes/

If that still doesn't work for you:
Maybe you have an old iPhone provisioning profile that somehow interferes with your iPhone 4 because they use identical names? I renamed my old iPhone to iPhone 3GS in iTunes and the new one to iPhone 4 and thus never had any problems.

Someone please find out how to upgrade to 4.2 on iphone please...

Start up Itunes and check for upgrades? When it says "IOS 4.2 is available", then click "OK".

(Running beta software is a big risk - a risk that should be avoided if you actually use and depend on your Iphone. Most developers (those targeted for the beta) will have a second Iphone for test and development. If the beta kills that phone, they can still use the 4.1 phone for business.)

It's a developer beta. Report the bug to apple.
Btw: Do you need to check your mails on your developer device?

This is the first time a beta build broke anything, and yes, I don't have a developer $125/month phone. This is my only iPhone atm.
