I'm just happy that...

Back to my Mac finally works with 10.5.1. A tiny bit slow in connecting but very responsive otherwise and I'm very pleased with it.

I don't know why, but when I installed 10.5.1, my MBP rebooted, went to the gray apple logo, rebooted, went to the gray apple logo, rebooted, went to the gray apple logo, rebooted, etc etc etc for two hours non-stop.

After an excrutiating night, I finally had to do a clean erase and install. Bleh!

I'm having some weird issues, like the actual images not appearing in stacks anymore, just the default thumbs. And everything feels sluggish -- weird.

This was happening for me in 1.5.0

specifically the default "aaplication" icon for some apps. It will finally appear after awhile and remain.

One annoying bug still remains, if you're uploading a file via webdav (and presumably other network connections) and the other side stops responding, it'll just sit there like a stuffed cabbage. Can't even kill and relaunch Finder... have to log out and back in again.

Anyone else notice that this update seems to be utilizing less RAM?

It looks like, from what I have running, around half a gig less.

Maybe 10.5.1 made Leopard less of a RAM hog?

/if this has been mentioned before, my apologies. I didn't have time to read through all of the 21 pages of comments :)

yes me too!!!

I haven't had the opportunity to check this out yet, but if true...this is HUGE! I had def noticed the increase in RAM usage in 1.5.0

the bugs with this configuration, again i think probably 's top selling pro config make the system unusable for almost anything.like i said there are thousands of similar screenshots on the net but just so you get an idea of what i mean look at

these little lines are shown all over the display, constantly with no way to fix it.the colors and shapes also appear covering up everything on screen under them continuously while using leopard. if it happened just once in a while or was not common and some oddity or rare bug that'd be one thing. But its not. if put leopard on a mac pro with the most popular graphics card they sell out of the 3 options they offer, they would have seen this bug.
which even fuels my frustration further because there is NO doubt that they saw this major bug and still went ahead and sold the OS at retail and up until right this moment they havent even officially said it exists.

I have the Mac Pro with ATI X1900 and dual cinema displays. Both look beautiful under Leopard. I have seen over 20 machines with this exact same configuration and no lines. I have never seen this bug and I was a Leopard beta tester. I am not saying that it doesn't exist, I am just saying don't be so quick to jump all over Apple for releasing a buggy OS for the Pro machines because your problem is not as wide spread as you seem to indicate.

It seems to be alright for my Macbook. They didnt fix what I wanted in 802.1X but I guess I will have to start complaining more :)

Hi-

I was getting kernel panics to the point where my machine wouldn't boot after installing 10.5.1. It was related to the VPN. I followed the tutorial here, uninstalling the VPN, and it worked. I have a MBP 15" CD 2 GhZ with 1 gigabyte of RAM.
Hmmmm... :apple:

There seems to be an issue with Cisco VPN and .Mac "Back to my mac". I don't think you need to uninstall the VPN, just turn off the .Mac back to my mac service in .mac preferences. I now run my cisco vpn fine and I don't have any problem.

iCal

I have had a minor iCal quirk, and I would like to know if anyone else has noticed this as well. It seems that the icon in the doc no longer displays the current date. See the wee screen shots below:

Is this just one of those fixes that causes a bug?

Check out the reply I got from Bickety regarding the same problem. It is post #376 in this same thread. It worked like a charm for me.

Good luck.
Joe

Thx a lot did not see that post, worked like a charm for me as well thank you for your reply and tank you Bickety for posting a good explanation of how to fix this.

You sat there and let it reboot over and over for 2 hours. Hmm.

Actually, I didn't sit there and do anything. I let the update go and when it did the first reboot, I went back to work. My roommate called two hours later and told me that he noticed every couple minutes my computer was rebooting.

screen capture modifier keys

To save screenshots to a file:
Command+Shift+3 - saves entire screen
Command+Shift+4 - gives you a selection cursor so you can grab any portion of the screen

To save to the clipboard, just add in the Option key to the above keystrokes. You can then paste into any program.

unless my system is set up differently from everyone else's somehow... it's the CONTROL key you press to cause the captured image to go into the clipboard rather than a saved file.

dock folder menu complainers have every right to complain.

I hate when people keeps complaining about the menu bar and the Dock. PLEASE... This is how it is guys, Panther brought the exposé effect, some people use it and some don't it also brought the dashboard, one feature that I personally don't hate but not use. it was all part of Panther, the new OS X. Then Tiger Brings Spotlight and I don't know what else... crap for some and godies for others... this time Leopard brings a lots of improvemnets inside and they just change a couple of things for eye candy only... the magic it's inside, and you will know it when out of this world apps start popping around next year. then you will love Leopard as much you love Tiger now. Manu bar and new Dock are here to stay. like or not. and still kick Vista A5S all the way!

very inapt analogy. exposé and dashboard were feature additions, not feature deletions. i think it makes perfect sense to complain when a system upgrade deletes a feature that many of us relied on for efficient file navigation, regardless of what fairly useless new features are added at the same time.

Haha!

I have wondered about people who leave their Macs on for weeks/months at a time, and I wonder - why?

Yes some people are running servers, but there just seems to be almost an obsession with not wanting to reboot their Mac.

Why?
Drastic temp changes are often one the main culprits of computer nastiness.

The Mac is my main tool that helps make my mortgage.
And all four of my Macs run 24/7/365.
Restarts only happen when required (eg: software updates) or on the rare occasion that something just feels flaky.
Otherwise, my Macs seem happier when running.

Works for me, tho YMMV.

MacBook Wireless Woes

I have been looking through the post but can't seem to find anything related to the MacBook wireless problems that many have been having. Does anybody know if the problems have been fixed?

Repair Disk Permissions Issuee

Repair disk permissions ran more slowly under leopard and had an SUID file issue or two. I don't remember seeing any files being repaired. I updated to 10.5.1 and got the following messages:

Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/load_hdi" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources/DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/readconfig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/writeconfig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/authopen" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Anyone have similar issue or have some direction? The issues are occurring on a 17" Powerbook, 1.67 GHz G4

Hi,

I downloaded the 10.5.1 Update today in class over WiFi with no problems. However, when I went to restart, it failed to install the 10.5.1 patch and said that I need to contact the manufacturer.

Has anyone else experienced this? Or does anyone know of a solution? Or should I just wait and try to call AppleCare tomorrow?

Thanks for your help everyone ... Long live Apple!

WHY OH WHY!

Why aren't new topics like this posted under a NEW topic??? It makes it impossible to ffind a specific topic related to the new OS 10 release.

SHEESH ..

admin lost

Don't worry, just boot from cd

Insert the Mac OS X Install disc and restart the computer.

When you hear the startup tone, press and hold down the C key until you see the spinning gear.

When the Language Chooser appears, select your language and click Continue.

Choose Utilities > Reset Password.

Follow the onscreen instructions to change the password.

Quit the Installer and restart your computer while holding down the mouse button to eject the disc.

You can change your login keychain password in Keychain Access to match your new account password to unlock your keychain when you log in.

At this point reload the system and next time the system asks you for the login and password just se the root that you just have set. In this way you can reconfigure your admin user to be administrator of your MAC :)

after that you can choose to disable rot once again:
Open Directory Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.

Open Directory Utility

Click the lock to make changes, and then enter an administrator name and password.

Choose Edit > Disable Root User.

Most studios don't turn anything off.
I ran my dual g5 for years never turning it off. Just sleeping it or restarting for installations etc. I have owned over 30 macs and almost everyone has never been turned off except as stated above.

no new stack Icons... but you can use this. It's a very good idea. It gives you what looks like bins for your stacks i.e. application bin or download bin but still shows you what's inside that bin.

http://t.ecksdee.org/post/19001860

Just download the icons and move them into the specific stack. They've been modified using the touch command to always be on top.

Enjoy,

HHM

I've been using these for a bit now...absolutely beautiful! These are the icons that should have shipped!!!!:) Can't say enough about how smokin' these things look on the dock.

No Flash for me after 10.5.1

I tried reinstalling Flash player and it still doesn't work. Any one out there with similar issue? Any ideas on a solution?
