What I don't get is why just having iMail and Safari open it uses 1 GB, of my 2 GB ram. That doesn't give me a whole lot of room to have other apps open does it? I guess it was like that in Tiger, I never noticed.

You are right. I found that iStatPro shows I am using almost a whole GB of memory when iMail and Safari are open. I am sure the widget page takes some memory also as I read the iStatPro widget, but . . . . that much?

By the way, I don't have any of the other problems you cite.

I'm using iStatNano, it's supposed to take less space? I'm not sure if that adds a significant amount of ram usage. I think Safari is what's hogging up the ram. Maybe?

I reinstalled the Weather widget and that works now. The stacks items I just redropped in the folders again and now it works. iCal I'll give another day or 2 maybe a reboot and fixing permission will bring that back to normal.

Slow permission repairing seems to be normal with most users. The choppy mouse cursor I still don't know why it jumps around. At least it's usable, just annoying.

No Kernel panics. That's always my biggest fear, but since being an OS X user since the Panther days I've never had kernel problems on any of my 3 macs, Well except that one time I tried overclocking my video card

The program is pulling the same data, just displaying less. most likely iStat Pro and nano will have close to identical foot prints.

Thanks for that, I agree those make the stacks look much better, and I was thinking about making some of my own overlay icons like that, but to be honest that is a trivial 'one time to fix' thing to me, compared to the functionality issue of them removing hierarchical folder access, which turns what used to be one click access to a file or folder into a 2,3,4 or more click action whenever I want to access a file. All for no good reason whatsoever. Insanity. It didn't need fixing, why did they break it?! I mean there has to be other, more useful things they could have spent the time on, surely, Surely? :p Gahhhhh.

Anyway, I've ranted about Stacks far too often on these forums already, sorry everyone. Back to 10.5.1... hoping for 10.5.2 to bring some joy back to the dock for me!

I agree with you. This is a temporary aesthetic fix for now. The functionality was more efficient before. At least this helps a little with recognition. I think that we'll see improvements in the future.

Now, as I've mentioned on these forums before, if only I could change the colour of the little glowing dots underneath my open apps in the dock. Even making them a little bluer so I don't have to duck my head down a little to confirm if there is a dot under the app or not.:D

I am, overall, very happy with :apple:10.5.1

mmm...

So obviously putting 10.5 on your machine is equivalent to putting your pecker in an automatic pencil sharpener.

Yet I fear this thread has many pages of life left.

Grrr. I don't see why we need to be shown this. It's annoying. It's going to happen no matter what, whether we click "ok" or just sit there.... so why pester us with it.

Because there are times when it will take a while and by telling you it is doing something, you won't be tempted to hold the power key for 4 seconds after having stared at a blue screen for a while.

Actually, installing 10.5 is far less painful. ;)

I keep reading and a post here and there says that X feature is snappier. I can't get the "Inconceivable!" "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." dialog from my head. :)

Amongst other things, 'snappy' can mean 'fast'. An Oxford English Dictionary will confirm this for you.

Back on topic, 10.5.1 is much snappier than 10.5.0, though I thought 10.5.0 was quite snappy anyway :)

Like a lot of you, I also bought into the Leopard hype and upgraded right away.
Some of the issues I saw prior to .1 are still there, and wonder if they'll get taken care of.
Overall, disappointed with Leopard.
4/10. :(

So far, so good. The beachballs that would occasionally hang up the Finder have disappeared. Overall, the system seems more stable.

I've not noticed much change in bootup time or responsiveness overall, then again, I'd already noted that Leopard 10.5.0 was already noticeably faster than Tiger 10.4.10.

However, not much in Disk Utility seems to have changed -- the ARD error and ACL messages still come up, and scrolling the "Info" window still renders it unreadable unless I resize the window.

The only glitch on my system is with Software Update. After the initial Leopard installation and with the 10.5.1 update, the updates would show up on the list. But, when I click to download the updates, I would immediately get the message to reboot, even though no files had been downloaded. I would later on have to download the files from Apple's website, and install them manually.

This time around, after running the Software Update and rebooting, the info window showed that my iMac was running OS X 10.5.1, but checking the finder, I found that none of the system files had actually been updated. Software Update had already incorrectly indicated that I needed the full 109MB download (I thought that Intel iMacs are supposed to only require a 39MB download), so there is a glitch somewhere. After downloading the 10.5.1 update file from Apple's site, everything went smoothly thereafter. But, this issue with Software Update is bizarre, and it doesn't seem like anyone else has this problem.

Snappier?

Is it just me or does Safari feel slightly snappier?

Hmm...I'd say it's you. Safari for me seems quite sluggish at times...it might just be my ISP however...but it seemed to work faster in Tiger.

i thought it was only me. in my case i think its that my airport keeps cutting in and out. since upgrading to leopard the n network seems to stop and start so ive been using my old network for the time being and even thats not working too well. other than that has anyone noticed that trying to change the info on movies in itunes corrupts the movie file if its on an external drive?

FWIW, Leopard Safari seems more sensitive to hardware errors; it was quite sluggish until I replaced a malfunctioning router. YMMV, of course...

Installed. 10.5.1 good to go. Took maybe 2-3 mins on my MB. Not major differences, but maybe I haven't had to experience the bugs other people did. I used to use XP and Vista, so Leopard is like the holy grail compared to those others. Jesus people complain a lot on this site... I don't call the President when my tax refund is late....

It's easy to belittle others for complaining about their issues when you haven't experienced them. I'm glad 10.5.1 is working well for you. For me, and others, it is not.

I don't think he belittled anyone. And there is a difference between useful complaints and whining. For example:

Parental Controls had multiple problems in 10.5.0 that made it only usable for time limits for me. With 10.5.1 even the small problems with time limits are fixed! I may even try more of the PC features to see if they work right now.

vs.

My computer doesn't work right after I upgraded to Leopard on a production machine and now I can't do any of my work and i'm gonna be fired! Apple suxors! Leopard is Vista the mac way!

The good thing for me is that my memory usage is back to pre-leopard which is great to see. For whatever reason this update has fixed leaks or whatever was going on.

Remember when...

an update was people giving their computer info and what they did and that was the end of it?

Okay, 15" powerbook G4 1.25 with 1.25GB Ram. After reading all the horror stories, thought I'd stick with just Leopard but then saw some slowdowns on just normal functions. Went ahead and downloaded the complete update. Smooth install and everything seems fine knock on wood.

Only real third party software of note is the Sidetrack beta for Leopard. Actually installed it before the update and no problems.

Oh and I really love spaces. It's a very nice feature for a notebook.

I'm still having a problem with applications that require your attention (bouncing dock icon) when the dock is hidden. Example: Adium; sometimes it works, sometimes I don't notice that I have 20 messages until 10-15 minutes later when I unhide the dock.

Fortunate

I never had any problems with leopard on our new iMac, except for the occasion Mail hangs when shutting down. I haven't experienced that since 10.5.1.

I have the feeling that some of the bugs people experience could be due to the fact that a clean install was not preformed. I know it's extreme, but I've meet so many people who basically took a Mac that hasn't been upgraded or updated since 10.3.9 and report so many buggy features on Leopard. I can't say there is anything wrong with this build. Right now, I have 17 apps and everything is smooth. Thank you, :apple:!

With 10.5.1, Safari is so snappy, I don't even need to type in the URLs anymore. It knows in advance where I want to go... ;)

But seriously folks, nothing to report here. 10.5.1 is no different on my iBook. Still need to think about golng back to Tiger.

Nope. That's not it, at least in my case. I took my MacBook and wiped it clean. Installed Leopard fresh and immediately applied the 10.5.1 update. I tried this several different ways... let Software Update get it or download it. In either case (and with a fresh install of Leopard each time, mind you), I immediately had problems with connecting to my AirPort with 10.5.1 that I didn't have with 10.5.0. There is a problem with this update, not the method in which it (or Leopard) is installed.

In comparison, my MacBook is now running Tiger again (10.4.11). I installed Tiger fresh, and then let Software Update grab the 10.4.11 update. While the update was installing my AirPort was discovered and my 2 AirPort disks auto-mounted. That is what I'm talking about. If Tiger can do it, then Leopard can too. Right now, however, that isn't the consistent case.
