It's a battery life thing. The new chip handles the always listening part with minimal battery cost. Google pioneered this technique with Google Now in the Nexus line (I believe).

Actually it was Motorola that pioneered this many years ago in the first MotoX. However since its in iPhone now obviously Apple invented it.

I don't care at all anymore, especially since Moto management was a worse bag of chicken lickers than even Apple has today. I do feel a little sad for all the Motorola engineers that lost their jobs- they were the best sound and radio geniuses ever collected together in one company.

So why does Hey Siri without power only work on new iPhones? Is it because my 6 is not powerful enough with the A8 chip?

Is it possible to test content blocking with the 9.1 PB?

I could only find the content blocking browser but no extensions for Safari.

My air 2 was practically unusable for the first 10 min after the update. Working perfectly afterward, obviously a bunch of background things going on there for a while.

Spotlight indexing. Should always wait 15 mins after an update.

Thanks for killing my Apple Watch connection over Bluetooth! I think I'm done with the betas on my phone. WHY WOULD SUCH A BASIC FEATURE GET KILLED?

Pain in the ass time installing the DP GM due to a lightning cable going bad but the GM was running great on my iPhone 6 and iPad mini 2 retina. DP beta 9.1 is running even better! Combined with the DP GM of El Capitan I must say Apple is doing a good job in the OS department! The whole dev beta process for iOS 9 and El Cap have been pretty much pain free! Bravo!

If you read the replies, this 9.1 beta is a lot more stable and smoother than iOS 9 GM.

For the first time, I don't think I'll be upgrading to iOS 9 release at all, I'll stay on iOS 8.4.1 before iOS 9.1 release for my iPhone 6 Plus. It's quite disappointing really, as this iteration was meant to be general improvements over previous versions, but it runs beta 5 runs like a hog, and others are saying the GM is similar on iPhone 6 Plus :(

That is a surprising conclusion to make. I am/was running the iOS 9 PB from the very first iteration to the now (3rd ?) revision and all throughout I was surprised by how stable the experience has been for me (comparing to iOS 7 betas). Battery has been very consistent (as with iOS 8.4.1, meaning no substantial decrease in battery life) and stability has been great. BTW, running iOS 9 PB on both iPod Touch 5g and 6g, and although the 6g performs faster, both have been running iOS 9.

Don't know what to tell you. Could be the hardware and not necessarily the software causing these performance issues. If you were running this on an iPhone 5 series or even 6 series phones, than that is another story...

Well, lucky you.
I switched from 8.4.1 as status bar bug was driving me mad and 9 PB 3 was quite satysfying. However, about two weeks ago it started to be a little bit too heavy on my battery. With only 3G enabled it lasted for only 5 hrs of usage. There were some problems with smoothness as well.
Installed 9.1 PB 1 and it runs a little better. As far as battery is concerned, I have to wait.

Finally, Siri learns your voice now for "hey Siri" (settings/Siri/activate hey Siri)... This is problem one solved (user distinction), but what about multiple devices (like iPhone and iPad) using "hey Siri" in short distance? They still react both ...

Strange...haven't gotten any updates the past 3 weeks. uninstalled and reinstalled the pub beta profile and still nothing.

If you have more than one Apple ID, check in iCloud settings if the apple id is the same you used to enroll your iOS device. (It seems dumb but it happened to me).

9.1 is running smooth on my 6, chuffed!

What happens when our 6S phones arrive? Will we be able to install from a 9.1 backup? Will it be running 9.1?
You'd need to install 9.1 on the phone if you'd want to restore from a backup that was made from 9.1.

They will arrive with 9.0 i guess and it is a problem cause is probable that you can't restore a 9.1 backup on a 9.0 device. It happened to me when I sent my 6 for a repair. (I was using 9.0 beta and they return it with 8.4, so i had to update to 9.0 beta first and then restore my backup). So if the 6s came with 9.0 you need to install the public beta profile on it and then update it to 9.1 for finally restoring your 9.1 backup.
