If you need a pop up notification to explain what a toggle does, then your UI team has really failed.

Come on now, that's just armchair grumpiness. There are LOTS of things in this world that need contextualization and narrative. Its a naive cultural expectation of our time, that everything should be reducible to a simple icon. But have you ever heard of a universally-understandable system of road signs? No. Why? Because its impossible. Lets be real.

Correct, its on an iPhone X.

I don't see it on my X.. ;(

If AirPlay 2 were going to be in the 11.2 release, it would have been in the betas; it wouldn’t just appear in the final.

With HomePod due by April 30, AirPlay 2 should be released within the next three or four months, unless HomePod gets delayed again.

New HomePod ads say that it will be released "Early 2018"...

So my iphone 8 automatically updated to 11.2 i thought a day or so ago, but I'm experiencing the date bug. So what should i do???

Apple today released iOS 11.2, the second major update to the iOS 11 operating system available on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. iOS 11.2 comes a month after iOS 11.1, the first major update to iOS 11, and it follows several other smaller bug fix updates.

The iOS 11.2 update is available on all eligible devices over-the-air in the Settings app. To access the update, go to Settings --> General --> Software Update. Eligible devices include the iPhone 5s and later, the iPad mini 2 and later, the iPad Air and later, and the 6th-generation iPod touch.

iOS 11.2, as a major 11.x update, brings several new features and important bug fixes. It introduces Apple Pay Cash, Apple's peer-to-peer payments service. Apple Pay Cash works through the Messages app and is designed to allow for quick person-to-person money transfers, like Square Cash or Venmo.

You can quickly and easily send and receive money through iMessage conversations with Apple Pay Cash. Cash is sent from a linked debit or credit card, while received cash is stored in an Apple Pay Cash card in the Wallet app and can be used for purchases or transferred to a bank account. For more on Apple Pay Cash, check out our how to.

For the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus iOS 11.2 appears to introduce faster 7.5W wireless charging speeds through compatible Qi-based wireless charging accessories. At 7.5W charging speeds, the three new iPhones are able to charge faster wirelessly than with the standard 5W wired iPhone power adapter.

When it comes to the iPhone X interface, iOS 11.2 adds a small bar underneath the status bar icons located at the upper right side of the Lock screen, which is designed to make the location of the Control Center gesture more clear. On the iPhone X, Control Center is accessed by swiping down from the top of the device.

In Control Center on all devices, there are two new informational pop-ups that are displayed when using the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth toggles. These pop-ups explain that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are disabled temporarily rather than permanently when accessed from the Control Center.

iOS 11.2 introduces a new Sports section in the dedicated TV app, which offers up access to live sports games through integration with the ESPN app. The Sports app can be accessed through a new "Sports" tab at the bottom of the app, and it offers up custom content based on team preferences and current sports seasons.

There are multiple bug fixes in the update, including a fix for an animation bug in the Calculator app that caused some numbers and symbols to be ignored when entered in rapid succession. The update removes the animations from the calculator app so calculations can be done quickly with no need to pause between entering numbers to obtain the correct result.

The update also addresses a date bug that caused continual crashing in iOS 11.1.2 after December 2. The problem was linked to local notifications, and according to a support document, it is fixed in iOS 11.2. iPhone and iPad users experiencing this bug should turn off notifications and then install iOS 11.2.

Other new features in iOS 11.2 include redesigned camera emojis and other emoji tweaks, a new loading animation for Live Photos effects, and Live wallpapers for the iPhone X. For developers, the update introduces a new feature that allows them to offer new customers discounted introductory pricing for auto-renewable subscriptions in the App Store. Full release notes for the update are available below:For more details on the iOS 11 operating system, make sure to check out our dedicated roundup.

Update: We're seeing several reports that Apple Pay Cash is not available in the release version of iOS 11.2. Given that this update was released at an unusual time, it may not be activated as of yet. It's likely we'll see Apple Pay Cash become available early next week.

Why do people always rush to call for someone’s dismissal the instance something goes wrong?

haha, remember when Tim Cook fired Scott Forestall because Maps sucked when it came out in 2012? so Apple didn't buy the mapping data necessary to make a working app then used it as an excuse to fire one of the architects of iOS, nice one.

What does "others nearby" mean? Just Wi-Fi networks it can detect at that time? So if I drive to work, it will kick back on and connect to my work Wi-Fi? Also, what time is "tomorrow"? Will it turn back on at 12:01am? It's so ambiguous, and I agree it looks like garbage having a modal popup occur there, and it doesn't really serve to help anything. Does the popup at least go away if you toggle it on/off a few times?

Does it come up every time? Hope there’s an option to dismiss this warning forever. But it’s wishful thinking...
Its a 'first time' deal and disappears after that. Since they changed how those options work in iOS 11 it apparently needed a bit more explanation regarding the changed behavior.

You need to buy official compatible wireless charger.
Non authorized third party chargers have been disabled in 11.2 for safety reasons at fast charging.

List of officially supported wireless chargers can be found here: https://www.apple.com/shop/iphone/iphone-accessories/power-cables

What a nice excuse from Apple to charge three times as much for a fast charger. Also I think RawPower should clarify whether their chargers are enabled on iPhone X/8/8Plus

I installed the update on an iPhone 8, and wireless charging is working just fine for me on a RAVPower charging pad.

That haptic feedback on iOS 10 which was there on iOS with NC and CC has been removed in iOS 11 on 7 Plus. It felt weird after a year of "Feeling it". Interesting they have it on the X now but not the7 Plus on iOS 11
That's pretty cool.

Well, guess I should upgrade then!

*Screaming: NOOOOO DON'T DOOOOO IIIIIIIIITTTT!!!!!*

Ha :D

Then, wireless fast charging isn't working.
I just checked the phone (58 mins on charger) and it is at 78%. It has charged 28% in about an hour. I remember reading that the charging slows after a certain point. I don't recall what percentage that is. I believe it charges faster from 0 - 50% than 50 - 100%. Maybe someone who knows for sure can chime in.

Correct.

I'm not a fan of the bar under the control center. Is there an option to turn it off? Knowing Apple, there isn't.

Software is a process, not an end goal. There will always be bugs that need quashing, especially when iOS is constantly evolving and being iterated on. If a software engineer is sacked every time there is a bug, we won’t have anyone left to work before long.

Just step back, take a deep breath, and let Apple do their thing.

The issue raised by the person you quoted is not the existence of bugs. That is, as you noted, a fact of life in even the very best development environments with the very best talent.

The issue is the relative frequency of those bugs relative to the past, as well as the relative severity of them.

I don't think my memory is being selective when I say that things are worse with iOS 11 and High Sierra than they have been in the past. As someone who has been testing developer builds for over a decade now, I can also say that's a somewhat common viewpoint on the Apple message boards, too.

I'm not one to jump on the "must fire someone" bandwagon; it stinks of the "don't just stand there--do SOMETHING" approach to management that, in a word, sucks. But something's gotta give.

Yes even wired it slows down at 80%

New HomePod ads say that it will be released "Early 2018"...
True, and while I agree that “Early 2018” sounds like a Jan or Feb timeframe, Apple actually categorizes their releases as Early (Jan-Apr), Mid (May-Aug) and Late (Sep-Dec).

That said, I would expect HomePod before April 30 :)
