Well clearly enough were that Apple did what they have never done and released an update at 12:15AM on a Saturday to address the issue. They must have some info you don't as far as how many are effected. But the bottom line, that answers your initial question as to why they released it before Apple Pay Cash was turned on.
Yeah, no doubt a lot of devices were affected.

There are 800+ million iPhones in use; even if only 3% of devices had the issue, that’s about 25 million. If around 10% were affected, it would be closer to 100 million.

I could easily see 5-10% of users having an app that utilizes local notifications, which triggered the restart loop bug that 11.2 was quickly pushed out to fix.

did Apple know about this bug? How did they know 11.2 would fix it? If so , why wasn't it released on Friday at the usual 10AM PST? Whole thing is a bit fishy.

Yup. He could have been a SJ prodigy, but lost in a very ugly power play not of his doing. Apple looses people like Scott, Tony, and Bertrand yet keeps the likes of Eddie.

Enovaters no longer seek employment at Apple. They join when bought by Apple then leave after a year or two.

What’s wrong with Eddie?!

Name me one other employee that had even half the varying responsibilities as he’s had?!

Apple Store webfront,
Apple Pay, Apple Pay Cash,
^ this with its speed and negotiations with global banks, AMEX, MasterCard, Visa has earned his pay and bonus!
App Store
AppleTV
Etc

I’d say he’s done more for Apple and all of us users then what Ive has contributed, and is just as crucial to Apple as Forstall and Bertrand were.

Not enough know what Eddie does just criticize his pink shirts. Give the guy some respect he’s not the a-typical car salesman.

I agree on your other points! We gained Craig after Bertrand Left (whom) Forstall (respected) was OSX’s last great hope of great evolution.

Come on now, that's just armchair grumpiness. There are LOTS of things in this world that need contextualization and narrative. Its a naive cultural expectation of our time, that everything should be reducible to a simple icon. But have you ever heard of a universally-understandable system of road signs? No. Why? Because its impossible. Lets be real.

Well said.

Apple Pay Cash isn’t live yet because it uses iMessage which guess what, macOS has as well. Both need to be updated in order for Apple Pay Cash to sync and work properly across the platforms.

Yes, they knew—once it was triggered. Australia and New Zealand are 16-21(almost 22) hours ahead of Apple’s US Pacific time zone. That gave Apple plenty of time to confirm that 11.2 fixed the problem. I’m actually kind of surprised they didn’t get it live before they did, but I suppose they were trying to get in as much testing as possible. But who knows.

If Apple had known about the bug before the date rolled over and triggered it, they no doubt would have pushed the update sooner, or included the fix in a prior release.

I always do the software updates right away, but I am not upgrading to 11.2 until Apple Pay Cash comes out. Like... what the heck Apple? How is that and iMessage in the cloud so difficult to release?

I’ve updated in hopes a Bluetooth and notification bug is fixed. I don’t care for Apple Pay Cash as I’m in Canada so it’s not going to be available here for a long time. Still waiting for iMessage in iCloud.

Not all iPhone or iOS users are on the MacOS platform so it wouldn’t affect them. Your reasoning is sound though.

So my iphone 8 automatically updated to 11.2 i thought a day or so ago, but I'm experiencing the date bug. So what should i do???

If your phone auto updated a day ago, you've probably auto updated to 11.1.2 not 11.2

I don't believe any phones are auto-updating to 11.2 yet

Sounds like they got lucky that 11.2 fixed it

Beware.. IOS 11.2 seems to have issue with camera focus, at least on iPhone 8. Mine stopped focusing. Rolled back to previous IOS version to verify that it does not have that problem.

I had that issue with my 8 plus, I just reset all my settings, didn’t clean install, just reset all settings and it fixed the focus issue I was having.

Just to confirm, you reset to factory settings?

I'm re-updating to 11.2 and restoring backup, let's see what happens then.

no restore at all, I did that and it didn’t fix the issue, what worked was just reset all settings option, no restore needed. Just all your settings will be reset to factory settings but nothing will be deleted at all, much easier to fix all your settings than restoring the phone.

I've been getting some weird freezes and odd behavior on my iPhone X as well. And I started with a clean install. Went to the Apple Store yesterday to have it checked out and the genius was pretty frank with me. He said that iOS 11 has has more weird little bugs like that than any release he remembers, especially on iPhone X, and he (jokingly) pined for the days of 10.3.3, which he believes was a highpoint of combined functionality & stability for iOS.

He said that I could reinstall the OS if i wanted, but he wasn't sure it would help. He said these weird iPhone X freezes and hiccups seem to be getting better with each new update, and that monitoring my phones behavior with each new relate might be the way to go. And since reinstalling the OS is a pain in my arse, I'll just wait for bug/behavior fixes.

I've been doing betas for the past few years and 11 is the first time it wasn't exceptionally stable by the second release. Any other time there would be the type of glitches that only occur in oddly specific situations or some weird combination of apps and settings. But with 11 it was just flat out unstable until the fourth release....THEN by the time it was at the 5th release it was on the same level as the second release for past betas. I don't know what happened with ios 11 but it was really REALLY bad this time.

I think the line they added to the lock screen in the top right on the iPhone X says a lot about what Apple thinks of our intelligence. Between that and the constantly visible line at the bottom, I think it’s time to give everyone an option to turn these off. The interface takes less than 1 minute to figure out the first time you use an iPhone X. Stop jamming it down our throats.

After about 12 hrs or so off and on usage with 11.2, it does seem a bit smoother than all the previous versions of iOS 11 did on my 6s. Haven’t messed with my iPad much today.

Just did that and the camera still trying to focus contantly, it hasn’t solve the issue.

haha, remember when Tim Cook fired Scott Forestall because Maps sucked when it came out in 2012? so Apple didn't buy the mapping data necessary to make a working app then used it as an excuse to fire one of the architects of iOS, nice one.

I'm not one of those who pins tails on executives, and see Forstall as neither hero nor villain, but you neglect to mention that he was difficult to work with, if not an ass, and at odds with the other top executives, including Ive and Mansfield, who was ready to follow Fadell and the apps group lead out the door because of that friction.

Rolling its own Maps app was hardly a task to be underestimated, given that Google had a seven year lead, but the accounts of poor management and high turnover rested on Forstall's shoulders.

When you're not the co-founder of the company, not producing results, and are enough of an asshat to encourage others who had done their jobs to quit, you can't expect to be employed long and will likely be shown the door, no matter how brilliant you think you are, especially when your most powerful ally is gone.

A toxic personality on top of poor results was his undoing, and his worth no longer justified his continued tenure.

That would apply at any company, and with any boss, not just Apple and Cook.

Did they remove the line under the upper right status bar for iPhone X in the final release? I'm not seeing the underline like is mentioned in the notes from the beta versions.

I just finished re-update and restore of 11.2 backup. So far I found this:

1) after update to 11.2 from fresh install of 11.1.2 > camera focus OK
2) after restore of previous 11.2 backup > camera focus NOT OK
3) after "Reset All Settings" > camera focus OK again
