Apple Releases iOS 11.4 With Messages in iCloud and AirPlay 2

My iMessages already sync across all my devices. It’s worked like that for years.

But the deletes didn't. So I would have to delete the one time code sent from my bank, for instance, on all 4 i devices and on the laptop.

Or the weather alerts.
Or the texts about package delivered.

Ok, so I updated and I was expecting some "Messages in the Cloud" screen to appear when I entered Messages, but nothing. I went into iCloud and in the "apps using iCloud" I turned Messages 'on'.

Is that it?
Go to your Messages app and at the bottom you will see a progress bar. If you don't, that means its complete and you can see that your messages have been uploaded in your iCloud Storage

There’s little benefits in clean install. You loose your keychain, home screen layout, data from Health and other local apps...
Your Health data is actually backed up separately just like Photos and messages are now. It is in iCloud Settings

Apple might not be implementing something like that at all.

Just seems logical to enable web portal access, once messages are separated from the phone backup and stored separately in the cloud. In fact, the iCloud utility for Windows could implement a texting function too, though web access might be enough heh.

Just look at Photos and iCloud Drive. Both are stored separately from the phone backup and thus accessible independently on icloud.com, as well as via the iCloud utility for Windows (you can browse both in Windows Explorer).

Could MacRumors clarify (like The Verge) that Messages in iCloud stores and syncs both blue iMessages and green SMS?

And with this cloud sync as the first step, how soon before Apple can implement Messages on the icloud.com web portal? Any hint in the betas?
Messages on iCloud.com probably won't happen. Right now iMessages are sandboxed within iOS and macOS... If they open that up to the world wide web it is an entirely different monster. Also, having messaging capabilities on the Mac give them a leg up against competition and I don't see them giving that up.

I have to believe that since the feature is called "Messages in iCloud" and not "iMessage in iCloud", that it takes care of both. Seems like it would be a huge misstep to not store SMS messages.

That would be sweet, just for the times I can't avoid using a Windows machine.

If it did people wouldn’t have a reason to own Apple hardware so I doubt that will be coming anytime soon.

Right, because iMessage is the only thing keeping us from buying Windows/Android junk.

Do you know this and is it documented or are you guessing? How does the new system handle the encryption from the sending device? Does it still use shared public keys for each recipient device? That doesn’t seem to me possible since you can add a new device and decrypt the messages. So it would seem to have some sort of common shared key.
Yes. One obvious solution would be that the iCloud storage has its own key pair, with the secret key stored on all devices associated with the Apple ID (so each of them can decrypt messages stored in the cloud). But it's just speculation. Hopefully the iOS Security Guide will soon be updated to explain what they are really doing.

With the end-to-end encryption that is involved with iMessages, and essentially the exclusive nature of iMessage being available only in iOS and macOS, seems like it's not necessarily something that's the same as photos or something more generic/universal, and thus not necessarily that's just a given basically.

iCloud message sync does not seem to be working. I have a iPhone X and a Apple 3 series all updated and Message turned on in iCloud. They are not deleting on the watch. iPhone and iPad work just not the watch

Anybody else having this issue?

I don't believe the feature carries over to watchOS. It's just for iOS and macOS for now I believe. Should be watchOS though as well.
[doublepost=1527639025][/doublepost]Anyone have this working on macOS? The option for Messages in iCloud isn't appearing in Messages preferences on macOS. I have tried all basic troubleshooting, nothing. Running latest versions etc.

It's not available in 10.13.4, we have to wait for 10.13.5 to get it. It even says that in the article you posted.

From what I’ve been reading/hearing, it doesn’t work with Apple Watch. Which is a real bummer. It’s the biggest pain in the a** to delete messages on the AW. Is it because it’s Bluetooth that it won’t do it? I’m not sure. Would love to see this implemented, though. Or even a way to Delete All.

yes totally agree, i would think perhaps in the future, Messages in iCloud will carry over to the watch...

Does anyone know if the Messages in iCloud will also work on the Apple Watch? Please tell me it will!

Including Apple Watch! That will be a true bummer if not supported.

This is what I really hoped for, too. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like it. Maybe Bluetooth is why? I don’t know. Mail syncs between the two...you’d think Messages would, too.

The air around your ceiling now appears to be iMessage blue. :D

(That's actually a good question. My guess would be your phone finally cools down.)

Seriously. If it works like iCloud photos it’ll work great. iCloud photos has a note of when it’s sync’d. Would be nice for iCloud messages.

I see the point, though I hope that Apple considers the benefits over the drawbacks.

And these days Apple supposedly sees the Mac as less of a priority than the iPhone. If so Mac exclusivity for iMessages may not hold sway as much.

And web portal access to iOS Messages is not exactly the same as letting Android phones directly participate via their texting app. Heck many carriers already offer texting web portal access for free (if we're willing to give up on iMessage).

If all you give is an email address, then yes, I suppose Facebook is free. The moment you start liking, commenting, or viewing content though, you are feeding the machine with tracking and aggregating data which they can use in any fashion. And yes, nothing is free, generally speaking...
But it more than that. Once they ID you, they monitor your location, they know where you go and when, they track you across the web, and more. I think it’s oretty creepy.
