I'm genuinely curious as to why Apple has put in the toggle to disable automatic downloading of the new iOS version.

It's a handy feature for people who don't want to update, but Apple has always been about aggressively pushing people to update. So why have they changed their mind? Has there been much speculation on that?

I think it's more granular now. You can choose to download automatically but not install, or do both. before if was only both, download AND install.

Yes if I am not where wi-fi is available. My unlimited data plan can handle the job so why does Apple not allow it?
But why is that a problem? Once you know there’s an update available, you simply must have it immediately?

I do understand you want cellular upgrades for major point releases.

Why should I not be able to do a major update over cell data? I have unlimited data. Is it Apple being a nanny to protect dopes who have limited data plans who may not know what they are doing and therefore run up extra charges?
Part of it has to do with agreements with carriers from what I recall as they didn't want tons of devices suddenly flooding their connections downloading large updates (often at the same or close to the same time).

Part of it might have to do with the mentality that mobile connections weren't seen as being something fully reliable (bad coverage in spots, dropped signal, etc.) when compared to WiFi in a general sense.

Another part that can be playing a role is not to overburden data usage from customer side of things as well, given that there are many who don't have unlimited plans and might inadvertently run into issues with large downloads if they don't pay attention. And while it wouldn't be directly on Apple, there would be enough that would complain in one fashion or another to make it at least a perceived Apple issue.

Does anyone know if 13.6 can be installed over 14 public beta if you remove the beta profile?

It cannot. You can never go "down" in software without erasing and starting over/restoring from backup. You would have to connect to iTunes and download the IPSW and install over IOS14.

I believe you can only go "down" if it is something like 13.6.0 vs 13.6.1 (2,3,4,etc). The X.X has to be the same or higher, but the 13.6.X the "X" is irrelevant.

You know very well why, don’t you? Unfortunately, not everyone on the planet is based with your knowledge and intellect. A simple user error could result in hundreds of dollars in data overages.

Makes sense, doesn’t it.
No it doesn't at all. Perhaps there should be an opt out from Apple's protection. Funny how they were not so concerned about our welfare when knowingly flogging defective keyboards for 4 years.

Though it may be upsetting to you, is this an actual problem?

This is not a problem for most of us, but there are people out there who only have a cellular phone and no home Internet or WiFi of any sort. These people tend to get behind on things like iCloud backups and OS updates since they're only offered over WiFi.

Apple should allow anything to be done over cellular that can be done over WiFi, period. The OS should warn the user they are on a cellular plan and may use a lot of data, but it should be *POSSIBLE*. They've made some steps to improve this, like making iCloud Photo Library updates work over cellular, but aren't there yet.

This is one of those things where I wonder why they're being so stubborn about it.

I hate updates. I feel like my phone gets slower each iteration.
If there were no updates, you would be complaining about bugs that Apple hasn’t fixed, as well as not having any new features.

Fallible humans create fallible software.

Apple is far from perfect. However, I rather deal with some minor problems at times, versus being stuck with an OS that never really gets updated and lacks much needed security.

They’ve made up for that by gifting the human race with the Covid tracking API 🤣

So it sounds like it’s not an actual issue, but rather merely an opportunity for you to display some manufactured outrage.

Sure there are some who would be happy if Apple allowed it. But there are many, many times that number who could be negatively affected by a change.

If unlimited data becomes more commonplace, maybe Apple will add the option but I’m not holding my breath.

Where I live there are trees in every direction for twenty miles or so. Not everyone lives in the big city.

And while I can use my DSL on my computer for another few weeks, 4G is way faster.

Eventually I will use the phone as my sole internet connection. Yes, I know I can loop the hotspot to Wifi, but that is just plain stupid.

Wait until you get home? It’s just an update, it can wait. Or stop by a Starbucks or something. Sheesh.

The answer to this is to disable it by default, and require the user to manually turn it on. This is how it is with iCloud Photo Library updates over cellular.

Hell, they could make automatic updates over cellular impossible and insist that you start each one manually, where it will tell you how much data you will use.

And yet many of those who would ignore that somehow (and there will be plenty of those) will complain in one fashion or another to make it a perceived Apple issue. Why would Apple (or anyone) want to deal with that.

Beyond that, there are other potential factors in play between what carriers have preferred and agreed on with Apple to how mobile connections have been seen and treated in general, as mentioned earlier at https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...e-news-stories-and-more.2245978/post-28677659

What is the reason it cannot be done via my data plan?

As you already know, it’s a decision folks at Apple made for reasons we can only guess at. Maybe if you complain about it enough in the MacRumors comments, Apple will change it? 😂

Battery life seems about the same so far on my 2020 iPhone. Maybe a little bit worse? Hard to tell yet. Safari actually does benchmark a tad faster. Check out this Speedometer 2 result, would absolutely destroy any Android phone

Or a lawsuit. Apple does not tell you that you need to live in New York with insecure Wifi hotspots or have a Mac to friggin update the phone…

System Requirements
Internet access
Wireless broadband recommended; fees may apply.

I love updates but my iPhone 8 is very slow.

The iOS and iPadOS 13.6 updates are available on all eligible devices over-the-air in the Settings app.

Uh, nope. You absolutely cannot update your phone without an external WiFi connection. I have unlimited bandwidth over 4G, but there is no way I can make iOS understand that.

Third world OS.
I agree. I have 20GB cellular/month but I need Wi-Fi for iOS update. Strange 🙄
