The messages on a Mac still don't sync with the iPhone correctly. It has been like this for years. Imagine if Tim Apple bends to the EU's latest, ridiculous demands. If that happens, iOS is slowly going to become Windows.

This update introduces location services bugs. It does not store the state of your location services settings specifically when enabling or disabling the global option. This is a pain in the ass for people who turn it on and off for only traveling, one of the options that gets default enabled is diagnostics.

Ridiculous.

I poked around a bit more and it seems like sometimes different options will turn on when you toggle the global location services. Just …what?

It does not enable location services if you had them off, but I had diagnostics and product improvement etc. turned off and they were on once I updated. This is Microsoft level update settings reset trash. I’ll file a feedback tomorrow if this doesn’t make the news by then.
Is it just a coincidence that Tim Apple has sold a lot of Apple shares? He knows where this is heading. And if he doesn't why is he the CEO?

Again?!

Why did Apple reenable significant locations when I intentionally had it disabled?
Because Apple is busy with getting more titanium from Mars and recycling cellophane wrappers from previous years or some other nonsense. Maybe Tim Apple has been doing all the coding or some interns found 10 minutes of free time to write code at home.

Maybe some of you guys who've been here for years can chime in but... it sure seems like there's way too many updates these days compared to ten years ago. Seems like every few days, there is a reported issue, then I have to sit through another update. And another, and another, and another and... it's just out of control.
A lot more resources go into the functionality of the iOS now. Different programs pull information off servers to function. Really time GPS, the FaceTime sensor is going off every five seconds to somehow “ know your face better “ which I call bulls***t to.
That’s all it is, more apps , more depositors of information to be pulled from. But analytics running.
It just takes more to run the modern iOS than it does the vintage flavors.
That’s all.

I haven’t updated yet so I checked and it also happens in 17.0.2.

I actually thought iOS 17 would be the "Snow Leopard" update for iOS 16, but it appears that it's only dragging the bugs from iOS 16 over and creating new ones which require several small point releases to fix. Apple's software development and QA has really taken a nose-dive for the past few years.
It honestly feels like less people have hands on time with the newer iPhone releases to test for bugs and really refine the software. Might have something to do with keeping the devices information less visible to keep the devices secret till the last moment.
The less people with their hands on the iPhones the less information leaks.

But honestly it’s a double edged sword for an iPhone release that basically just a refresh of the last.
This years iPhone was supposed to be a new generation. New design new everything.
And well, we got a S model of the iPhone 12. An SSS model. It’s been essentially the same phone for 4 generations.
It’s a yawn fest.

Thanks, this is a pretty severe bug especially if you use location services intermittently. Those settings, particularly any involving privacy, should always be preserved. I am also using Lockdown Mode which you’d think would be even more robust.

If I have time to call Apple tomorrow I’ll do it, they’ve fixed a number of things I’ve reported before and I think I’m on some list that gets fast tracked because I’ve had a very high hit rate of finding severe issues and even more recent minor ones have been addressed quickly and get to the engineering teams.

Still disappointing, I get the overheating diagnostics or whatever being an issue in a new release but this existing location functionality should not have been screwed with.

There was also a messages bug that disregarded your preferences for low quality images (it always sent low no matter what) that I wrote up and they fixed server-side last week.

It’s awesome working for free for the richest company in the world but they’re the best of what’s out there so I put up with it and try to help.

I’ve done Geekbench 6 test and the results from iOS 17.0.2 and 17.0.3 are pretty much the same. Note that I encountered no issues with my 15 Pro Max in the past. So I assume Apple did not throttle A17 Pro to control heat.

You're not a developer, I take it. An OS is an extraordinarily complex undertaking, made all the more so by a strict annual release schedule.
actually, i am. for FAANG nonetheless. apple made a huge mistake not doing layoffs and kept their w3school dropout engineers.

What a smart comment.

thank you.

This is a quick way to lose best people.
the people writing the increasingly buggy junk aren't the best people.

It's usually a management issue — PMs overcommitting and creating a mad rush to deliver iOS 17 in time for the hardware launch. The number of features they were forced to defer to iOS 17.1 is telling.
they are PM's. the engineering managers need to push back if this is the case.

I love Apple's response, basically saying Kuo has no idea what he's talking about.
This was a case where Quo was talking about a subject of which he didn’t have enough knowledge. He was focused on the hardware being a problem and it turned out to be a software issue.

Because devices do get warm when they index, and every year people complain about heat, reduced battery life, etc on the first few days post update or release. Rather than acting high and mighty, perhaps take a step back and realize they were entirely correct to suggest as much.
Yes, that does happen and it is likely that some people had that heating this year and thought that it was the same heating issue that others are complaining about, but that is separate. Clearly some people‘s iPhones are getting very hot well past the initial setup phase. What makes it hard to judge the impact is because it is not happening to everyone. For whatever reason, perhaps the software that I run, my phone has been cucumber cool after the first couple of days. Other people‘s phones get so hot that they are uncomfortable to hold.

Hopefully this new OS patch will fix the bug and that it doesn’t require updates to Instagram, TikTok and other software that was involved.

Has anyone tried to ascertain why some models overheat and some dont? I have a natural titanium 256GB pro with no issues whatsoever. A friend has black pro 512GB with severe issues. I updated via phone-to-phone, friend updated via icloud. We both have all the Meta apps but obviously not the same amount of photos and not all apps are the same. If this was a legit software bug (and not a bad batch of cpu) I think it would be more widespread.
Hmm. Interesting. I got the 512gb 15pro and am still having major heat issues. In fact mine are arguably worse after this update. Could it be the 512gb SSD causing heat issues?

Also my battery performance is very poor currently.

Apple today released an iOS 17.0.3 update for the iPhone, with the software coming a week after the launch of iOS 17.0.2. Apple has also released a new version of iPadOS, 17.0.3, for iPad users.

iOS-17.0.3-Feature.jpg

The iOS 17.0.3 and iPadOS 17.0.3 updates can be downloaded on eligible iPhones and iPads over-the-air by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

iOS 17.0.3, which is build 21A360, addresses a significant overheating issue on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Shortly after the new iPhone 15 models launched, customers began complaining that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max were getting too warm, and even shutting down due to heat problems in some cases.

Apple confirmed that there was a bug in late September, and said that it would be fixed with an update to iOS 17. Some third-party apps had also been overloading the A17 Pro chip, leading to problems with heat dissipation. Apps affecting performance included Instagram, Uber, and more, and in addition to releasing an update to address the iOS 17 issue, Apple has also been working with app developers to optimize apps causing problems.

In comments to MacRumors, Apple clarified that customers experiencing temperature problems would see the issue resolved with an update, and that the titanium frame of the iPhone 15 Pro is not at fault. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that the overheating was likely caused by "compromises made in the thermal system design," and he suggested that Apple would only be able to fix the issue by lowering processor performance.

Apple said that it has no intention of tweaking the A17 Pro chip, and that the titanium and aluminum design of the iPhone 15 Pro in fact provides better heat dissipation than the stainless steel frames used in previous models.

The iOS 17.0.3 and iPadOS 17.0.3 updates also address a kernel vulnerability that could allow an attacker to gain elevated privileges. Apple claims that it is aware that this security flaw was exploited on versions of iOS before iOS 16.6.

Apparently many of you didn't notice that you had numerous, frantic app updates just before .03 today. That's because iOS is also dependent on much energy those apps use. Bet they had to tone it down -- not just Instagram.

In addition, for the yahoos who want to wait until there's special unicorn moment to update, don't forget that this is also a severe security update as well.
