Hmm, i just updated my iPhone 15 Pro Max to 17.0.3 and my phone turned into a white screen telling me that it’s “Attempting data recovery”. It took about 15 minutes to resolve. My iPad Pro updated just fine.

A request to the MacRumors folks: If there’s a security fix in an update, please mention that at the top of the article. The way this article reads, it seems like the update is only about the heat fix, unless one reads through to the very last paragraph where we learn that it fixes an already exploited vulnerability 😱
Thanks 😉

Gruber says 17.1 beta also includes this fix but it is not mentioned on the notes. Is he wrong?

Someone needs to test the performance on Geekbench before and after this update.
Does anyone _really_ thinks that Apple will explicitly say that they will not throttle down the phone on Sunday, and then proceed to do the opposite a few days later, especially when it is _so_ easy for anyone to discover this?

Not to mention that the entire hypothesis that Apple designed a phone with a CPU that is too powerful is simply idiotic.

I mean, think about it.

What are they gonna do? They have two choices if there actually is a design problem.

1. Admit to a design issue on the newest iPhones, issue recalls and spend millions on replenishing recalled devices with new models, spend additional millions on new engineering, new frames and manufacturing and halt all iPhone sales until they're out.

Or,

2. They could just brush it under the rug, lie about it, throttle the processor secretly, get a bit of bad PR but continue selling millions of phones this year.

I'm not saying there is a design problem, all I'm saying is that there is a much easier choice out of these two.
You are making it seem like you know for absolute fact that they would actually consider number 2.

Hmm. Interesting. I got the 512gb 15pro and am still having major heat issues. In fact mine are arguably worse after this update. Could it be the 512gb SSD causing heat issues?

Also my battery performance is very poor currently.
My 15PM has had no heat/performance issues since it came out of the box almost 2 weeks ago and it's a 512gb version.. I'll wait a bit before updating to 17.0.3 to see if it introduces any new bugs. I'm in no hurry, my phone works perfectly on 17.0.2

People are morons.

Maybe some of you guys who've been here for years can chime in but... it sure seems like there's way too many updates these days compared to ten years ago. Seems like every few days, there is a reported issue, then I have to sit through another update. And another, and another, and another and... it's just out of control.
As iPhone becomes more popular and dominant in the market, it becomes a more valuable target for attack. So hackers are constantly finding new ways to hack into iPhones. And the complexity of the OS has increased significantly over time, just look at how much processing goes into a single photo now. More complexity means more potential for features to break.

I remember back in 2015, it took them two whole weeks to fix iOS 9 when it had a huge flaw: the cellular data toggle stopped working. So people like me on limited data plans (which were more common back then) who disabled data for some apps in iOS 8, couldn't enable data for 2 weeks with iOS 9! 12 days is still kind of a lot for a big issue like heating, but at least 17.0.2 was available day-one for that transfer glitch.

Here’s a Geekbench after update from a 15 Pro. I didn’t do one before so take what you will from it.
That is similar to what mine gives on 17.0.2. suggests that there was no real performance impact.
single 2930
multi-core 7306

Something looks off with both the before and after numbers posted buy Aves, earlier.

How does any of this help people who are complaining that their phone gets 'hot' on phone calls or even taking pictures?
Best to ask them after they have had the fix installed for a while.

There have been a lot of different reports of the things that will trigger heating. There have also been a lot of speculation about the nature of the bug and the fix or fixes that have been required. From our perspective it’s hard for us to know if this fix would be expect to resolve a particular issue or not but I imagine that Apple knows a lot more about the actual source of the problem.

They would not need to underclock the CPU. They might need to throttle more aggressively as the temp raises. GB benchmark is too short, it never creates thermal issues thus comparing GB results is not indicative at all.
There may be no need for any throttling if the cause was a software bug or bugs. Throttling would only be needed if there were some really basic hardware design issues. I can tell you typing on my room temperature iphone 15 Pro that the hardware is not certain to overheat.

Apple can't release a patch! Daring Fireball said the overheating problem is a "nothing burger!" https://daringfireball.net/2023/10/overheatgate_nothingburger

I usually enjoy his posts but really wish he wasn't such a blind fanatic sometimes.
And yet, Gruber didn’t say that there was no issue and he didn’t call the heating “a nothing burger”. He acknowledged that there was some kind of software problem causing overheating. A that time, rumors pointed at Instagram and some others. Apple’s recent posts suggest that the problem was either a bug in iOS or at lest something that they could catch and handle with an OS patch. Gruber was arguing against Ming-Chi Kuo’s assertion (without backing) that the problem was due to the design of the iPhone hardware. Gruber wasn’t being a fanatic in this case.

I don't want to say the obvious because it has been said many times, but Apple has lost its mojo without Steve. An easy answer would be to blame apps, but in reality, Apple has lost the "it just works" tagline slowly over time and now we see the results of working from home and excessive focus on recycling.

Tim Apple is great, at managing inventory, but Steve wouldn't have allowed poor iOS quality, a barrage of bugs, and falling behind Pixel on AI and photo editing stuff.
Then why did he allow macOS Cheetah to be released which needed four revisions, followed up by Puma being released free of charge as an apology? And even then, it took until Jaguar for macOS 10 to be truly usable.

What about the fiasco of MobileMe? It was so bad that he publicly apologized for it when introducing iCloud.

All that happened under Steve.

Another 13 Mini user here since start of this year. I'm still on 16.6.1 and using this opportunity to ask if you've had any regrets (or negative experiences) with moving to iOS17?
I like how iOS 17 is more polished in many ways. Check my reddit post.

For me negatives are only regarding thermal/battery performance particularly on Cellular (LTE). Or it's just that my phone is getting older...

Both the phones and iOS are a lot more complicated with a lot more hardware and software features to deal with. With each added hardware and software feature there are more potential issues for the iOS coding team to fix and deal with. At least, that would be my guess.
