I think this is going to be one of the greatest releases of iOS yet. The stolen device protection is A++.

I do notice that both my phone and watch seem to have had a lot of little bugs fixed and performances improved. It's cliche and they always say that, but 10 is starting to settle down as a stable release.

This stupid iPad wallpaper bug is still a thing if your Home Screen wallpaper is different than the Lock Screen….

Apple today released iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3, the third major updates to the iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 operating system updates that initially came out in September 2023. The software comes more than a month after Apple released iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2 with the Journal app.

iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3 can be downloaded on eligible iPhones and iPads over-the-air by going to Settings > General > Software Update. Apple has also released iOS 15.8.1 and iOS 16.7.5 for those running older versions of iOS.

With iOS 17.3, Apple is adding Stolen Device Protection to the iPhone, limiting access to private information just in case someone gets ahold of both your iPhone and your passcode. It requires biometric authentication to do things like access passwords, turn off Lost Mode, make purchases in Safari, and more.

The update also includes support for AirPlaying content directly to some hotel room TVs, creating collaborative Apple Music playlists with friends and family, and more. Apple's full release notes for the update are below.

More details on all of the features that Apple has introduced so far in iOS 17 can be found in our dedicated roundup.

Telling the exact way to activate the new Stolen Device Protection is too much to ask?

…and watchOS 10.3

This one is the big one for me. It will be interesting to see if they used software to disable the Blood Oxygen meter in the S9 and U2. If they did for those already purchased before the ban went into effect, then a lot of watches will have been gimped.

BL.

About time. Sorta strange this hole was left there in the first place, but glad Apple is correcting it. Guess Apple didnt think they had to cover people that were not situation aware.
It is a cat and mouse game.

They tried to balance user convenience and security. Which makes sense. And when they originally added this feature the passcode gate was enough. As it was usually grabs while in use or while left unattended.

Thieves adapted though.

They will keep iterating as they need to in the cat and mouse game.

Hopefully it drives the thefts down as it increases the work needed to overcome it.

And still no fix for the Notification Center issues that have been present since iOS 16…

Am I missing something? Turned on Stolen Device Protection on my iPhone 13 but it's nowhere to be found on my 2018 iPad Pro. The article definitely makes it sound like it should be available on both.

Created a shared playlist, but unlike my other playlist it doesn’t have a collage of albums for its icon, but some random, ugly AI looking 90’s artwork. How come?
Happens to me with both shared and unshared playlists. One I created had the collage for a moment then switched to the other graphics that were introduced awhile ago as an alternative to the collages. I presume it’s a bug to be sorted

So I haven't read through many of these post yet, but I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue with this update. Suddenly, my address book is now showing every phone number as phone and every address as address and every email as email. Gone are the distinctions that tell me whether it's someone's home address or work address. All of that detail is gone. Has anyone else had this wonderful experience yet?

Apple lists it as “Stolen Device Protection for iPhone” so I think it is limited to iPhones.

Doesn’t show on my iPad either.

It says “significant locations” are needed. I guess if “significant locations” are not enabled, one will always have to wait an hour.
Yeah, this seems to be the case.

Could be an annoyance, but also can be seen as an even stronger security setup.

Now if someone who steals your phone also has your home/work address, it doesn't give them the option to bypass the security delay straight away.

If one were to be involved in a horrible, face-disfiguring accident that would cause Face-ID to no longer recognize you, would you still somehow be able to reset all of these features? (I could see time-delay being clutch, but still)

If the phone is in a familiar location then yes only the password is required to turn off SDP and biometrics all together.

These sorta comments are always anecdotal, but this update bricked my device when I installed OTA.

I plugged into my computer hoping to re-install but the device only gave me the restore option.

Luckily I have a good backup recently so nothing lost but some time. Might consider installing through a Mac to be extra safe though.
