Why is iOS 18.1 so big for the standard iPhone 15? (1.8 GB file) When it doesn't include Apple AI?

Let's just hope that Apple playing the long game on all this results in some genuine, mature progress. Somewhat confused right now.
Not sure. I used it on my iPad as I dont have the right phone. I dont have siri's voice turned on for that, so the first thing i asked it after just saying 'hello' and realising, was how to turn it on. He said he didnt know how to do that.

Um Apple you know the UK isn’t in the EU right??!?!? Riiiiiiiight? 😭

Two hours after installing the iOS 18.1 update, I finally set up Apple Intelligence on my iPhone 16 Pro Max. I’ve also set it up on my Mac Studio and MacBook Air M2, which are running MacOS 15.1.

Really waitlist to get the AI features!? If I was not reading these comments here I would not know about it. Not a good approach from Apple! I joined the wait list about fifteen minutes ago and still waiting.

The good thing is the hearing aid feature is amazing, even though I have only been using it for a short time. Wow, I have been missing lots of sounds!

Too late for me. I ”upgraded” to 18 in order to get RCS… which turned out to be a total bust.
well the issue here is out of apples hands, 20what you are wanting for is you mno to spin up RCS servers and send a profile update to your phone, my recommendation : contact you mno and ask about an ITA for RCS on iphone

what it this joined and preparing? I have downloaded 18.1 and installed. I didn't get anything saying joined or preparing . I'm in the UK

Joined the Waitlist on three devices at the same time. After one hour the iPad and iPhone changed to 'Preparing'. After another hour the iPad started Downloading, which took another 30 minutes. To activate AI on the iPad, I had to re-train Siri and select summaries for notifications, so now I've got AI on the iPad. Meanwhile, the iPhone is still stuck on 'Preparing' and the MBA on 'Joined Waitlist'. Patience is a virtue, I suppose.

It'll take a day or so for iOS 18.1 to "reindex" your phone. I used to see the same thing on an Android phone when anytime you get a major version update.
well 18.1 is a minor update hence the .1 ( unless ofc you skipped 18.0 and 18.0.1 completely) if it was a major update we would have skipped to 19.0

iOS 18.1 wasn't what I called a "minor" update. Just on my iPhone 16 Plus it was 1.76 GB download and install. Smaller updates are usually under 500 MB in size.
