I'm surprised the update requires wifi. All of the OTA updates during the 5.0 beta could be done over 3G.

Safari seems snappier! (Just kidding.)

After installing the update, Safari seems snappier. JUST JOKING, OF COURSE! :p I wanted to be the first person on this thread who said that. I haven't installed the update yet, but I'm about to do so.

I get an error message on my iPad 2 that says

"Unable to Check for Update"
An error occured while checking for a software update."

anyone else getting this?

My 4S screamed through the update, whereas an iPhone 4, 4th gen iPod Touch, and 1st gen iPad all took ~10 minutes for the whole process. I didn't time them, but it was a pretty obvious difference. I think the iPad 1's download size was the least (~39MB or so).

But all updated without a hitch. SO glad to finally see deltas and device-centric updating.

The update doesnt appear to have fixed the 'Setting Time Zone' problem.
Always using GPS still!

I very much doubt it uses the GPS. It is probably just using the Location Services.

For programs that don't need as accurate positioning as the GPS can give, Location Services can give coarse locations using the cellular network and/or WiFi base stations. This consumes almost no battery at all, since tracking of base stations is done anyway.

I have heard of no confirmed case where switching off the automatic time zone switching has actually helped. I consider that as just a rumor.

Settings Icon Bade?...

Isn't the Settings icon supposed to have a notification badge when an update is available? I tap into settings and I can see the update but no badge on the actual Settings icon.

So does this mean I have to recalibrate my battery again? Because I've had the update for about 40 minutes and it's already on 95%...

But then again, maybe I'm just analyzing this too hard.

And yet you're still getting OTA updates. You just have to connect to one of the 10,000 wifi networks around most people at a given time.

You people literally astonish me.

I don't see why you have a problem with people complaining.

There is absolutely no technical reason why an OTA update cannot be done over the cellular data network.

The only reason is that Apple is in the pockets of the Carriers... again.

That is not good for consumers and so you shouldn't be taking the stance that you are.

You're basically asking for artificial limitations to be put in place to restrict how you can use the product that you have paid for.

Was wondering that myself but was too impatient to wait to see if it eventually showed up. But I'd be curious if others see it or some other notification. Would seem like a good idea / feature since not all iPhone users browse MacRumors. :)

How can these updates be truly OTA when you have to be connected to Wi-Fi to update? I have unlimited data from AT&T so it frustrates me that I have to wait to get home to use my WiFi network.

Perhaps a setting on allowing data access regardless of filesize would be applicable for Apple to implement.

With all the hotspots that are free, it only makes sense to make the upgrade available via wi-fi only. You can't even download an app from the store that is over 20mb over your data plan.

Just finished the update in 6 minutes over wi-fi. Great job Apple on making this so much easier! My battery life has been pretty good since doing a fresh install of ios 5 two weeks ago. Let's see if this makes it any better.

I'm loving these OTA updates. About time Apple! 55MB, and new patch installed in just a few minutes.

Already had good battery life, no difference vs iPhone 4 so if this makes it a little better then great.

Also, switching tabs in Safari seems snappier.

just showed up on my iPhone4S hopefully this fixes the problem because i hate having to remember to plug it in at least once a day.

You are complaining about having to charge your phone once a day? Prepare to be disappointed with the update.

Yes...because making users use wifi allows the carriers to charge you for more data by NOT using 3G to do the OS updates...brilliant!! ;)

It is up on OTA, but needs WiFi to download == garbage... sigh, now I have to wait till I get home.

Which is annoying considering the beta OTA updates did download over 3G.

Daddy! I want the OTA update, and I WANT IT NOOOOW!

Carriers want people to PAY for the ability to use their network and for those customers to then use as little of it as possible.

If you pay for 1GB of data every month, the more of that 1GB you actually use eats into their profit margins.

Very few people will have a smartphone on a tariff where you have to "pay as you go" for the data you consume.

The Limitations Apple puts in place absolutely prevent people using their data allowance in a certain ways, helping to preserve those profits for the carriers.
