I'm in a conference so I can't test this... but can someone with a 4S give this a try: Activate Siri from the lock screen by holding the home button. Say any command or sentence. When Siri is done talking, press the home button again and unlock your phone. Is the volume of the unlock sound (and all other sounds) still ridiculously loud immediately after using Siri? This bug has been annoying me for almost a month.

I still have this problem after updating. Bummer...

After the download I get "the plug into iTunes screen". I am not near my computer used for syncing so I am stuck. I now have no phone until I can get home.

Bottom line, don't try an OTA install unless you are near your home computer. Also, be sure you have an up-to-date backup on that computer before attempting to update wirelessly.

Just applied it to both my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 here in Columbus, OH USA. I applied it over my home Wi-Fi and it took maybe 15 to 20 min for the whole process. The download of the 44MB update file was somewhat slow, I assume because tons of people are downloading it now.

Still the same least on my 4S

weird, iP 4S - OTA 44.6MB, Europe, Czech Republic..

Anyway, I wasn't experiencing any Battery life issues, and my 4s was without any problem on one full charge operating for 2 days... with normal usage like - calls, sms, reading a book, listening music, and browsing a web..approx 4 hours a day..

even though it prompted me to plug in the device into a power source, i didn't and only lost 1% battery. not bad...

I was just about to ask, was I the only one prompted for a power source. I did connect to power. One guy who posted on this thread had 17% battery left according to the screen cap, so I can see why they would prompt for that.

OTA and went pretty quickly.

And yet you're still getting OTA updates. You just have to connect to one of the 10,000 wifi networks around most people at a given time.

You people literally astonish me.
Yeah, must be nice being in a non government facility where there is wifi available for internet access. Some of us just don't have that luxury...

Things that carriers have said in the past have indicated that this is not the case - Sprint the other week noted that iPhones are good at connecting to Wi-Fi networks quickly, resulting in less demand on their cellular network and increased profit margins for iPhone users as a result.

AT&T has a terrible reputation in crowded cities for not having enough capacity. Moving people to Wi-Fi is brilliant for them.
That's exactly right. The biggest problem for the operators is currently the limited spectrum capacity. A 50 MB update may seem small, but if millions of iPhones download it on the same day it can easily overwhelm the network, particularly in crowded metropolitan areas. I'd rather have the capacity available for more urgent things than an OS update.

I don't think going for the lowest common denominator is a good idea. That's certainly not something Apple does elsewhere.

I don't like having to put up with an artificially poor experience because some companies in another country can't sort out their networks.

Then don't use Apple mobile products. Are more people stratified that they can do a delta update over the air on wifi than not? The no delta over 3G whiners will be few. Most likely on boards like this.

How is being able to connect to wifi and download a ~50MB update instead of an 800MB update "bad for the consumer"?

Most people aren't on unlimited bandwidth for 3G. Having an overage because of an update would piss anyone off. Especially when there are plans as small as 250MB through most carriers.

If anything, Apple is preventing customer annoyance and fees by forcing wifi, as a huge amount of iPhone users have no idea how data works.

And if you seriously think that Apple gives a **** what a cell carrier says, you're high. They're the most valuable company on the planet, and have more cash on hand than most governments. They tell the carriers how it's going to be.

Just because you've decided that YOU don't like it, it doesn't mean that you're the one who gets to declare it as something that's "not good for consumers."
I am glad we have OTA at all, I just think it is crap that you can't get it over 3G, why cripple those of us smart enough to have 2GB/Unlimited plans.

Daddy! I want the OTA update, and I WANT IT NOOOOW!

Yet there was no problem allowing us to download 110-125MB updates over 3G during the beta, complete with the you can go over your data allowance warning...

For me, it's a step backward.

The last update I did OTA on my iPhone 4 was over a 3G network.

Having OTA updates is a very major step forward for iOS, but there is just no need for Apple to put the restriction in place.

Someone needs to ask Siri why the subsequent sounds are so loud after using her services!

Hey if Apple can send out OTA updates this smoothly every time to fix a problem then I'm all for keeping this little bug around for a bit longer if they can turn around and fix a problem this quickly.

How many beta users are there compared to the number of 3GS, 4 and 4S users.

Actually, it is. You see, I was smart enough to start my own successful business, so I can not only work where I please, but also afford new-fangled, fancy things like wireless routers. It's funny. There's this thing called currency. You work for it, then you can buy products that other people work to make.

"Products" in this case includes wireless routers.

Caller ID issue

I still can not believe Apple did not do anything regarding the caller ID issue. They want us to memorize every single number?! It is a basic feature to have..a caller ID instead of their numbers... Thats it Apple just do the correct the damn thing

It appears they fixed the Smart Cover security flaw with the iPad 2.

Now that this update is out can the please get busy and get iTunes Match out??

You are complaining about having to charge your phone once a day? Prepare to be disappointed with the update.

What?

My iPhone 4 GSM with iOS 4.3 consumed about 20 % a day; calling about 15 minutes, web surfing about 10-15 minutes, reading a few emails, running apps a few minutes. I use iCloud, all location services, etc etc, I haven't disabled anything really.

With 5.0 it may have increased a little, maybe up to 30 %, but it is hard to tell.

With the 5.0.1 beta 2 it has been down to about 20 % again.

OK. Is there a link that shows this. Is it known whether or not the carriers asked of this restriction. It would be interesting to have seen a delta 3G OTA of 55mb in NYC or some other urban area.

Are you referring to the fact that when you receive a call from someone who is not in your address book it just shows the number?

I think this is a problem with the cell network, not the iPhone. I don't think I have ever had a cell phone that showed caller ID name info unless they were in my address book.

I've now gotten this message on my iPad1 twice:
"Software update failed: An error occurred downloading iOS 5.0.1" The iPad is not JB but I did use Cydia to enable muti touch control a couple of weeks ago. I suspect this is the problem. Anybody got any ideas? I'm not the most tech inclined.
