I need some help please???

I didn't get the automatic update so I had to go into settings and do the reset. Once I did the reset I lost everything on my phone, it was like a brand new phone again. Instead of installing beta 5, I synced my phone with iTunes to try and restore everything. After the restore, my phone still acts like a brand new phone. I tried restoring to an older back up and the same thing.

Anyone have a solution for me?

- Did you take the backup in itunes b4 before doing the reset?
- You can check in iTunes, the list of backups currently itunes has it.
Its likely that the backup might not have happened and in that case, you need to re-sync every thing from start.

Once the firmware is upgraded, itunes normally takes an initial backup as soon as the device is connected/found. Are you using that backup to restore the phone? If that's the case then that backup doesn't have anything and that's why the phone is as good as factory restored?

Wonder, why you wouldn't take a backp, especially pictures and messages before doing any upgrades ?? What's the hurry to skip this step ?

WIFI tethering on Beta 5?

I just got an 11" MBA and I have an iPhone 4 CDMA running iOS 5 Beta 5. I turned on Personal Hotspot and I am able to connect the Air to my iPhone 4 via Bluetooth tethering but not WIFI. When I try to connect via WIFI, the ID shows up on my Air and I type in my password to connect. The iPhone 4 shows the blue bar as if it has a Hotspot connection, but the Air gives me an error after a few seconds saying "Connection timed out". Then the blue bar disappears from my phone and the it doesn't successfully connect.

I've tried rebooting the phone and laptop, as well as resetting my network connection on the phone. Still no luck connecting via WIFI tethering, but Bluetooth works fine. I know I could just use Bluetooth, but I also use my phone for Bluetooth headset, so I'd prefer to use WIFI.

So here are my questions:

1) Anybody else on iOS 5 Beta 5 get WIFI tethering to work?
2) Is there anything special I need to do on the Air to get tethering to work?

I'm going to try to connect my iPad 2 to my iPhone 4 via WIFI when I get home from work. That will help me narrow it down to a problem with the Air or a problem with the iPhone 4's Hotspot. I know the last beta (Beta 4) disabled all Hotspot connections, so I was wondering if maybe they only enabled it via Bluetooth for Beta 5.

Thanks!

Beta 4 had a problem with wifi tethering, guessing they still haven't fixed this. It'll be fine by GM, just have to use Bluetooth til then.

My daughter can connect fine with her iPod touch (4.x) to my iPhone using Beta 5 via WiFi. I haven't tried it with anything else though

so anyone else having issues with text messages not being received until you reboot? its getting annoying that i have to reboot the phone to get a text.

Yeah, I think something is definitely messed up with mine. I just tried connecting my iPad 2 to my iPhone 4 via WIFI and it did the same thing as my Macbook Air. The blue bar appears on my phone and says "1 connection" just like it should, but on the iPad, after a couple of seconds of trying to connect, it says "Unable to join the network".

I don't know what else to try, other than restore my phone again (which I don't want to do).

Anyone else have this problem?

I am on beta 4 right now but when I check for Software Update Through OTA, it says I am up to date with iOS5?

Yes, very annoying...I dont even receive all my texts when I restart. Just a few

How many betas does apple normally have before the OS is officially released? For all you developers, how close to launch does it feel?

any fixes you've found by chance?

iOS 3 had 5 betas, then a gold master
iOS 4 had 4 betas, then a gold master

so i'm going to guess that iOS 5 is almost complete. and what we see here is close to the final version.

You have absolutely no basis for saying that.
Any new features were announced before beta testing even began so of course you're not going to be seeing any major changes from beta to beta.
What we are seeing is tweaking and bug-fixes and its very obvious from the comments in these threads that this thing is nowhere near bug-free.
Apple will go gold master when it's ready, not just because they've reached "x" number of betas.

Did you completely erase your phone and do a fresh install? Once I did that I have no problem with my text's. I'm CDMA though on Verizon's network.

I did and it worked but I was hoping to not lose all my texts and i didn't know if it was possible to keep old text convos without restoring from a backup. is there a way to restore as a new phone and keep my texts?

I agree, based on the launch date.

It says it is coming this fall, so that could be from September onwards, but I think it will probably will be late September/early October since we still haven't heard an announcement.

This software will be launched alongside the iPhone 5.

Thanks for the reply. I backed up my iPhone the day prior to the update, so there was nothing I needed within the past 24 hours.

The strange thing is that if I back up, the phone still acts like a brand new phone. I was finally able to have a back up that was over a month ago let me keep my contacts, music and email settings etc in the phone. Now all of my stored pictures, contacts, etc. are all over a month old and I am still missing ALL of my apps. I can manually go in and add the apps, which might be my only option.

Another strange thing is that if I just hit the restore button, I get an error that says there is a problem downloading the software for my phone. The only way I was able to back up the phone was to right click on the phone and click restore from backup. I still haven't updated to beta 5, these are all issues I'm having after resetting my phone.

Ideas?

Given the complex nature and critical importance of network-related features like WiFi syncing, OTA updates, and iCloud stuff, I'm going to guess that we're going to see an unprecedented number of betas of iOS 5.

It's possible, but I'm not expecting more than 1-2 additional releases at this point. Their goal is Sept, and here's kinda where I see the timeline unfolding:

- Aug 6th: Beta 5
- ~Aug 20th: Beta 6
- Early Sept: GM at the same time as the fall hardware announcements (iPhone 5, new iPod Touch, etc).
- Mid-Sept: General Availability.

It's already been said beta 6 is 17/08/11. Also apple have gone up to 8 betas before.

Plus where is it said they're aiming for sept? Everything says fall which is late sept to nov. when apple said fall last year for 4.2 for iPad, that was end of October or early November....

iOS 4 had 4 betas, then a gold master

It's funny you missed out iOS 2 which had 8 betas....
