iOS 5 installation failed about 3 times in a row.

I closed every app I could, restarted the iPhone and it's installing right now.

Apple must be swamped with requests right now.

iTunes seems to be giving a more friendly message now saying that the Update Server is temporarily unavailable.

Which is better (strangely) than what is was saying!

iCloud mail and MobileMe mail is quite a mess. Somehow all my mail and addies got erased from everywhere. Luckily I saved archives to my desktop.

Ok so now my Mac Address Book is fine because I imported the archive but now how do I get those addies onto my devices? I thought iCloud would read my MAc Address Book and spread the contacts all over my devices via cloud but nope.

And for some reason iCloud is using my old MobileMe account. Thought it would be a fresh acct.

Constant errors... ughhhh!!

iTunes keeps spitting out CONSTANT new errors at me, all in the 3000 range. I can't update my phone & it's stuck in recovery mode until something works. :( Thanks, Apple. I'll keep clicking "restore" until something useful happens. Restarting everything does not help.

iMessage is built into to messages application. It automatically uses iMessage to send messages to others using iOS5 (this will be indicated by blue text bubbles instead of green).

I finally have 5.0 running on iphone 4 but I don't see
imessage is this only for the 4S ??

Thanks

turning on airplane mode solved problem for me

thanks to the poster that recommended turning on airplane mode. i was getting the "internal error" message. tried restarting everything, and nothing worked until i tried airplane mode, then no problems.

Airplane mode/restart/DFU mode not necessary

Downloaded the iPad and iPhone updates earlier and got the internal error when trying multiple times to update each. Just tried the iPad update again and DID NOT do anything with Airplane mode or restart or anything. It just seems to have had trouble contacting the update servers and I finally got through. After the backup finished iTunes went through the following gyrations before finally kicking off the update:

verifying ipad restore with apple,
preparing ipad for restore,
verifying ipad restore with apple,
preparing ipad for restore,
waiting for ipad,
preparing ipad softwrare for restore,
verifying ipad restore,
restoring ipad software
restoring ipad firmware

Update is finishing up now. Keep trying.

I'm soooo freakin tempted to update to iOS 5 right now!! What's stopping me is that, apparently, it's easier to sell an iPhone with older software. Last year, I got turned down by two people once they learned my 3GS had been upgraded to iOS 4. I'm assuming they needed it for jailbreaking/unlocking.

Plus, since I plan on buying a new iPhone 4S this weekend, I figured it's probably worth the wait so that my new phone feels completely different. New hardware and new software at the same time is definitely a win-win, in my opinion. :)

Notification Center? I don't see where I can enable the Notification Center in IOS5 nor do I see it as a stand alone app in iTunes? What am I missing?

Same here. Be patient. Hour later and my 3GS is restoring. Seems to be a mess updating this go around. I'll wait for my 4S to show up.

My update to IOS 5 is stuck at the very beginning, at "Backing up"...

Is there a way to pass this stage? It's been there for a very long time...

I played a little with iCloud.

On my iMac, I changed around some of my bookmarks and cleaned up the bookmark toolbar. Went to check my MBP, the changes were there!

I removed a contact from a group (address book) and added it to another group on my MBP. Went to my iMac, and Address Book had changed there as well. Picked up my iPhone, and it had changed there too.

Cool....really cool....

I'm not quite getting how to move all my contacts from my mac to iCloud.

does there have to be two groups? on my mac and iCloud contacts? that's kinda dumb, i'd rather just 1 group be universal.

Does anyone know how much time it take to download the new software?

Depends on how fast your Internet connection is and how slammed Apple's servers are. Mine took about an hour.

I'm still trying to get it to install tho... That's a separate issue.

Patience Is A Virtue...

To all who think their phones are bricked because you're stuck in Restore mode. You're not bricked. Just be patient. I've been retrying for the past 2 hours and it finally just went through. There is no magic formula. Just be patient!

For all you Jailbreakers.. make sure your /etc/hosts file doesn't have any gs.apple.com entries in it or you can't restore. You'll see iTunes trying to connect to Apple Servers for a moment, then it fails. Tiny Umbrella can help you. Google is your friend.

If you haven't started your iTunes update yet.. I'd suggest waiting another day or risk putting your phone down for several hours.

Patience my lads, patience...

IOS 5 Update Help!!

Hey I had been running IOS 5 Beta 7 and I went to update my phone to the new version today and iTunes says that it I have the current version. I downloaded the .ipsw of the newest build and tried doing a restore from that but it says an "internal error" occurred. Does anyone know how to fix this for me or have any guidance for me? Thanks
