my **** is completely bricked.....all becuase I can't contact the server. You'd think that there would be a way to back up to a previous backup. I'm a single dad, I can't NOT be reachable

All okay here with my good old iPhone 4 and iOS 5.

The download of the 774.4 MB was ten minutes (cable modem).

Then I had to interrupt the update process because iTunes told me that I need additional 9 GB on my Macintosh-HD. All together I had calculated that I'll need 40 GB free for iPhone (32 GB 3/4 full) and iPad 2 (64 GB half full) backups and Lion update. I had to transfer some files from my MacHD to an external HD first and that needed 30 min.

During the update the iPhone showed up some iCloud screens. And then—after the reboot—there were some questions (dialog screens) about the iCloud. I signed in with my Apple ID but did not activate it yet. I had to clear three "sync conflics" (adress book iPhone/Mac) and allow confidental informations "AppleMobileSync möchte Ihre vertraulichen Informationen verwenden, die in ‘InternetAccounts Access Group’ in Ihrem Schlüsselbund gesichert sind. Möchten Sie Zugriff auf dieses Objekt gewähren?“

One hour net and iOS 5 was up and running. I could surf with Safari, make screenshots, phonecalls, receive and send emails with attachments. But iTunes still didn't let it go and there were another 60 min "Restoring Apps", videos, photos, music and the folders on the iPhone filled slowly with apps. Never seen that before in an iOS update. Maybe wireless?! In that time I couldn't start apps and the home button had a strange behaviour. Patience please.

After another hour everything was okili dokili. The eject button showed up in iTunes finally and I disconnected the iPhone from my MBP (and made a "security reboot"). I tried a ressources-demanding game (arcade racer Asphalt 6 runs smooth like before), some synths, DAW and DJ apps. Lots of new entries in the iPhone settings. No lags on swiping the home pages or photos in the roll.

Tomorrow evening (it's midnight here) I'll make further testing and the updates for iPad 1+2 and Apple TV 2.

Recommended so far! :)

Well good news Habakuk, I waiting for a few days myself. What about your apps? Save games and other app data? Did it come across ok?

Download Time

Ok. Maybe its taking this long because i needed to download iTunes 10.5... but still this is insane...

iOS up and running on a 3GS, I am really curious about the battery life. I downloaded iOS5 without installing it and then deleted all of my music from my iPhone. After that I installed the update. I just thought that it is pointless to have 25gb of music sent to apple and then reinstalled on my iPhone, it would take for ever.
Is this what it is doing with my apps, when it says 'restoring iPhone apps'? My folders are all messed up! No big deal:eek:

Are you serious? This happens every time IOS has a major release. Just relax....wait a few days or weeks and you'll be much happier.

Because the same people whining about not being able to upgrade are the same who come back a few hours later and say, "I lost everything, my phone is broke! I hate Apple!"

Dragon Dictation (which most, including David Pogue, believe powers the dictation features of Siri) is a free download app which does a pretty good job. It's been out for a while. Runs on iPhone 4, iPad 2, etc.

Thank you for the suggestion. If I'm not mistaken, however, this would require the user to press more buttons and copy and paste things into other applications such as facebook and what not. I was hoping Apple would make an Android type voice-to-text dictation microphone button in the keyboard that would be available for the iPad 2.

I'm assuming by your response that it isn't in included for iPad2. What a shame

definitely getting faster. 36mins to go. Hopefully I wont see the same errors other are.. have put into airplane mode in case

right. Its downloaded. Seems to be running faster than the stated time at the top of itunes. Might just be the usual slowdown in the evening causing it.

Oh well. After all that I backed up and then got same error message as others when contacting apple servers. Despite airplane mode. One more go then off to bed to try again in the morning.

its frustrating because I have been looking forward to iOS5 most of all recently (until I found out I will have to upgrade to Lion for icloud and saw the videos of siri.....)

Was bricked about a half hour ago but the restore seems to have gone through now... it's putting all my stuff back on. Maybe the servers or whatever the holdup was is easing up.

That the heck!!

Ok, this is terrible...I've been sitting here for over three hours trying to do this update thing!!! This has taken longer than any other update. Once it downloaded the time to restore the phone itself is crazy, this sucks!! It said it was restoring my phone, then it's restoring the apps...too much time!!

so lame.... all my devices worked except my iPod touch (latest generation). I'm afraid to mess with it again as I have all my music stored manually on my device i don't want to loose the music playlists etc... any suggestions?

Tried 20 times

Still getting internal server error. Software download was quick but can't install.

Tried:
-removing movies and tv shows to free up disk space on phone
-airplane mode

Both of the above made no difference. If I have the software is there a way to restore the image onto the device then sync?

Any other ideas please post!

EDIT: I'm in! Just keep trying.

I think you'll have to just keep trying or wait.

Based on the advice of others, I turned Airplane Mode on. Retried about five more times and it finally worked. May have had nothing to do with Airplane Mode.

Oh, and if the software downloaded but the update just never happened. Hold the power and home keys down for about 15 seconds, until the "connect to iTunes" thing comes up. At that point you'll only have one option: restore. Having downloaded the update, it should restore, up to IOS 5. (That's what happened with my iPad and I'm still going through the restore - about half way done).

just tried airplane mode restore. first time I tried it went through. This is after trying 5 or so times without airplane mode. i did a direct link IPSW download if that makes a difference.

finally got iOS 5 on my verizon iPhone 4 it has taken all afternoon to get it done.. stupid server
