I feel your pain on maps, but lets just hope google gets their stand alone maps app in the store with a quickness! Or apple just overhauls maps in a big way, not seeing that happen for a while.

It's not too grand. I thought at least I'd get turn by turn navigation to make up for what I've lost, but...NOPE. I've got an iPhone 4. What excuse do they have for not giving me access to it? Lack of processing power? Like GPS navigation hasn't been handled by chintzy little devices without even a quarter of the hardware the iPhone 4 sports. Oh no. Apple just wants me to upgrade to the 4s or 5.

...which I likely am in a few months. But I can't help but feel I've been royally shafted in the meantime for no reason other than being corralled into giving Apple more cash to get the latest and greatest features they decided to deny me.

On the positive side, other than Maps...which, no, I'm not a huge fan of, and the goofy new search screen in the App Store, iOS6 is...at least...solid and speedy. It might be my imagination being bolstered by the new car shine, but it does feel like it's got a tiny bit more snap than the already snappy iOS5. It's not an absolutely overwhelmingly awesome update, but it's decent enough.

Though it'd be more decent if it weren't arbitrarily stripped of features.

Downloaded it on my iPod Touch 4. Nothing to write home about as expected. It will be once i get the iPod Touch 5 I'm sure.

45 min for three devices at the same time wireless (WLAN). rMBP needed less than 4 min for 10.8.2 btw.

All okay with iOS 6 so far. Tested the ressources-demanding game Asphalt 7: Heat with iPad 3 and iPhone 4, runs fine. Safari browses. iPhone phones and sends and receives text messages. New app "Clock" ("Uhr" in German) on iPad.

i can't believe it... this is the first ios update that actually makes my device faster and not slower! (iphone 4 that is)
everything is smooth again!

iOS6 - First impressions Maps

Just completed the iOS6 update.
First impressions:
Installation was simple. 7 mins to download the OS and about 10 mins to update the firmware and install the OS.

Maps:
Vector maps look pretty good. Responsive and pretty. Satellite mode, however is a major backwards step (see pic).
No visible landmarks in Brighton (UK) at all. Very disappointing. As expected the 3D option is only available for major metropolitan areas it seems. London, Birmingham. Manchester. Not Edinburgh or Cardiff though.
I'm sure the imagery will be updated, but it's not a patch on the Google maps and Streetview, yet. I can only hope that Apple is committed to rapidly updating the satellite imagery and expanding the 3D option.

Also Apple really needs to get the local public transport info built back into the app. I don't need bus timetables for London, i want them for where i live.

i know this is all fixable, but it needs to be done in the next month or two, because I'm getting the feeling that Google could submit their Maps app to the Appstore and it would have to be accepted as it still provides functionality that the Apple app doesn't.

Siri:
Daniel sounded a bit warbled after the install, but he's back to his old self. The expanded search options are a welcome addition to the UK. Searched and found restaurants and ATM's.

Oh yeah, a Safari seems snappier to me!

I can't believe more people aren't talking about the ability to stream your iTunes Match library OTA. I'm looking forward to not having to take up space on my device with music!
I for one am looking forward to it too. ;) But: Is it possible to sync some music to the device via iTunes and still stream the rest of your library via Match? In iOS 5 it's either syncing or Match, but not both.

Updated iPod Touch 4 but pretty pointless as it does not take advantage of all the features, but nice update anyway. iPod Touch 5 will be much better to use iOS 6 with. Only took 20 mins to download.

No iPad One support?! WTF?!

It has more powerful hardware than the 3Gs, so why is it not supported? Because Apple wants to push the sales of the Mini they are about to announce? F... this :(

Also, Maps should have been an option, instead of forcing an inferior product down our throats. F... this, too :( :( :(

I WAS going to more or less say the above .. .and you saved me a job! Well done, Sir! At last the truth can be told! :)

Not sure if this has been noticed already but my 4S, now toting iOS6 on Orange UK now shows 'EE' as the carrier (Everything Everywhere).

May be something to do with the fact that Orange UK (EE) is the first to roll out a 4G network in the UK?

Image

Its the fact that Orange and T-Mobile are now under the household name of EE

Apple no longer sells the iPad 1 but until last week they sold the 3GS.

If you are on Verizon, Sprint or ATT then you are going to subsidize a new phone whether you like it or not so the smart move is to upgrade.

My tally:

Lost an app from my Media folder. Not sure what it was, so I guess I wasn't using it that often.

I had to uninstall Dead Space in order to create enough space for the update (2.5GB!)--kind of ironic. Now the app store is not recognizing that I previously bought the app and is offering it back to me for $6.99.

Safari and screen transitions feel snappier.

Passbook "Cannot connect to iTunes Store".

Maps has so little actual information. It will label the "Gerald Ratner Athletics Center" near the Univesrity of Chicago but won't identify the campus as the University of Chicago no matter how much I zoom in. 3D is kinda neat and kinda gimmicky.

Yes, that's no longer included. Google now has its own YouTube app in the App Store. It's better than the one that Apple included, except that it now includes ads.

And they ruined Airplay: Now you can only airplay youtube videos in mirroring mode (i.e. tiny picture and blue pulsing bar at the top)

Personal Hotspot Broken for ATT

Did the update break anyones personal hotspot on ATT?

iOS6

They it's compatible with iPhone 4. But actually it's not.. all they good features will be disabled, so you purchase the lasted model.. and that of a company that says "We are here to make the most beautiful products, we are not in it for the money". Are you having a laugh? The iPhone 4 is clearly cut out to make FaceTime calls over cellular or do turn-by-turn navigation. I paid a little over £500 for my iPhone 4, I expect it to be 'supported' a little longer than that.
It's just so annoying to be "forced" to by the latest models to get new features. My next phone is going to be an Android! And by the way, iOS is becoming really boring.. the same slide-to-unluck and icon layout etc since day one.. You are in version 6 now... give us a face-lift!!
