I guess I'm a bit more cynical...shouldn't these things have been in the original 8.0 release? Why did the process break down so badly that made it necessary to release an update so soon after a major release?

Because that's now reality works. Issues are found or become more important and are addressed. If everyone waits for everything to be found and addressed nothing would release at all as that would never happen (short of very small and limited software that doesn't do much).

Yeah "System 8" the icons are like the Palm Pilot. So many complaints Apple changed it back to 8 yr old technology look and feel
