i find it funny that people are complaining about the "massive bezel" without the bezel, where the hell would you be able to grasp the device without confusing the touch screen sensors? oh that's right, the rear of the device you just be self adhesive for easier single handed use.

And thanks to Apple, that's changing.

Even Youtube is slowly moving away from it, which is huge.

The thing to remember is that Apple isn't fighting Flash with their own proprietary Apple format. Yeah, that'd be just as bad.

But no, Apple is fighting flash with open standards. We should be cheering them on.

Yes, Apple will destroy Flash right after they cure Cancer and AIDs, right?

I'd like to see iPhone OS 4.0 bring the iPad interface to the iPhone. The Leopard dock and ability to chose your own home screen background would be most welcome.

Okay. At my company the iPad was described at the management meeting today right after its introduction. Everyone wanted one, ordering one for each person. I'm buy 4 for the family. It's perfect.

now, wtf is that your company do? spreading propaganda for apple much?

Personally, I can't see why anybody would buy this. For $200 less you can get a netbook which does a lot more. You can even put OSX on a netbook. This really is (right now) just an oversized, overprice Ipod Touch with 3G.

No deal for me.

So far, I have been 100% right about the macbook air (which is mostly a failure at this point), and 100% wrong about the iPhone (which has been a big hit). However, the ORIGINAL iPhone was pretty bad...the app store is what saved the iphone.

Definitely no sell for now. We'll see how it progresses in the out years. In general, only excessively rich people or financial idiots but any 1G apple products...

Most people who buy computers these days use them for web browsing, IM, Facebook, games, YouTube, music etc.

iPhone apps are hugely popular.

Flashy touch screens are hugely popular.

iWork gives it a practical purpose, and will make it more attractive to students and business people. So will the newspaper apps. And book app/store.

It will sell.

i would hug you if you were here.....

Personally I'm happy with it. I do agree though that it needs:
1. Camera for chatting
2. Flash Support
3. Native Printing
Until it gets these I'm waiting. Pricing was what I was expecting.
I do agree that this is just a iTouch on Steroids (Added 3G and GPS with bigger screen).

WELCOME TO THE FUTURE, PEOPLE!

What Apple needs to develop for the iPad now is:

Handwriting recognition
Multi-tasking
Flash

With those abilities, and a $499 starter price, I see a huge market wave pushing most notebook and netbook buyers to the iPad.

Yep, I was surprised to find no handwriting recognition or multi-tasking... and even though I'll wait until those are included to get one, it's still a mighty fine device, and I think it will go over very, very well :)

iPad - Tablet Killer - it will outsell all other tablets - even if it doesn't have the functionality of a windows based Tablet.

More Functionality != better seller.

( BTW - nice specs below )

more like because PC tablets don't sell anyway. better than no sale, is not exactly any better.

HP, Dell and Acer are going to jump in here too, who knows. especially since iPad is so weak in term of a "computer". People have different expectations for a small screen smartphone, and a big screen computer, what works on a iPhone, might just not gonna be good enough on a computer.

Deal Of The Century

Somebody help me out here...

So, you're telling me that for $200+ more than a netbook, I don't get a camera, no Flash support, no multitasking, no physical keyboard and at MOST 64GB of space? And, to top it all off... the grand daddy of it all: for $30/month, I get the pleasure of using AT&T's 3G service (which is just amazing, right)?

Hahahahahahhahahaha.

Funny stuff.

YOU CANT GET A BETTER DEAL THEN THIS

At first I was a bit disappointed. Then I watched the video on Apple's site, given the whole thing some thought, and now I'm pretty excited.

I can see a few uses for this thing:

1) A few months ago I signed a contract for a AT&T datacard for my Macbook @ $60 a month. Really, I don't use it that much, I just need to access the internet when I'm on a train or traveling. This will do that at half the price. So I very well may pick one up. It'll also be a better experience than reading the paper on my iPhone on my way to work each day. I'm undecided on whether I'll get one in the short term, but if I wasn't under contract for the datacard, I'd buy one as soon as it came out.

2) Where I see the huge market for this is for people like my parents. My dad is on the verge of retirement, and has an aging PC that he's looking to replace. His needs are basic (e-mail, web surfing) and his command of technology is acceptable, but not particularly great. He was thinking of getting a laptop so that he can access the internet when he goes to Florida. Honestly, he doesn't need a $1000 Macbook and a broadband internet connection at his place in Florida. Now, he can pick up an iPad for $629, get online at his house in CT and in FL, and will probably be fine paying $15 a month. Pretty much zero learning curve for him, great portability, and everything he needs. Only thing I would need to figure out is how to allow him to print from something like this. Maybe wifi?

I think a more technical user like myself (and most people on this board) are always going to be better off with a laptop. It just makes more sense. But I think the masses will greatly benefit from a device like this, and many will be able to rely completely off it. I see the price point for cellular data as being a real seller. Just hope AT&T can handle the load.

Hmm.. so I wonder if I can grab a chip with the unlimited data plan and use it on my phone? I currently pay $50 bucks for unlimited data plus 200 minutes on a pay-as-you-go plan. I never use the phone function and text message once or twice a week. Hmm.....

Anybody who says this is just an iPod touch is an idiot.

keyboard input? application for writing? Journalists and mobile writers are going nuts about this.

It's not revolutionary, but it fits some very key niches at a decent price point.

It will have a niche, but here's who it will not serve:

-Visual Designers (unless I'm wrong). touch screen is great for typing and browsing a UI- that's pretty much it. Now how can I use this device to draw a sketch with? can I use a WiFi connected pen-tablet as input device?
- Multimedia authors. So it's great for Internet communications but will I be able to download video files from my camcorder, do a rough edit as with FlipShare and upload the finished file?
- The 'camera' with a 10" screen is awesome. Just hope it shoots 1080p and takes accessory lenses.

More griping later...

It needed to be so handsome that it would tempt people to buy it before they fully understood it, and it just isn't. That black border makes it look like all those cheap, crappy photo-viewers. Some of the mock-ups we have seen, particularly the one with the narrow aluminium bezel, are much sexier, and could have lent it that must-have quality. Interesting hardware packaged in a mundane style? Strange for Apple.

If you need to punch out a 80 character Twitter message, this is awesome.

Of course, any serious journalist is not getting this device. Ever.

are you kidding? have you not surfed the internet in the last ten years?

sooo much content now is based on flash. i can't believe you don't realize that.

Are YOU kidding? Name me ONE thing that's useful and based on Flash? Ads? Video players that use a ton of CPU? Whole websites based on flash (that should have a non-flash version btw)?

Give me a break. Flash is useless!!! In my daily life the only place I see it is for browser ads.

Netbook killer?

Absolutely.

Macbook killer?

Not quite. Nor is it meant to be, at this time. I was hoping for one, but really, I don't think shoving a Core 2 Duo and a 256mb videocard in there was realistic.

Multitasking? I would have liked to see it.

I'll be getting one. This device is just too cool and interesting to pass up. And the iWork implementation + keyboard dock seals the deal. The HD connectivity is nice as well.

You take the cake saying THIS POS is better than an netbook.

Care for me to humilate you by showing you the specs of various netbooks and aaaaaaaaaaaaall the things this POS obese iPod Touch CAN'T do???

Oh, excuse me while I read my textbook on it and listen to music. Oh, wait. No multi-tasking.

A post that makes sense

This post says it all. And also why I might buy one for my wife. We have one imac for two people. My wife checks email, writes letters, catches up on her favorite blogs and watches some shows (and still manages to read 2 - 3 actual books a week and work full time - go figure). The iPad sounds perfect for her, and we can easily take it with us on a trip. Meanwhile I can use the imac for things like MAMP or anything else I need to.

I think maybe as a more tech savvy person it's easy to forget how cool and easy this is to use for someone who isn't. Just because we have all this technology around us most people only want to go skin deep. They have no use for Disk Utility or Multi-tasking.

For example, my grandmother who is intimidated by a computer would probably sit on her couch and use this for hours to play Scrabble.

To little children, and grade schoolers who can't type a multi-touch interface is very intuitive because it is more of an analog to every day life.

Plus, you can't underestimate the tweens and teens who will be begging their parents for one of these INSTEAD of an iPod touch or Nintendo DS or PSP. The parents will reason that they can use it too, the kid can use it, the kid can play games, and if you attach a keyboard they have a little computer for schoolwork.

Children don't need windows 7, Ubuntu, or OS X on their computers and neither do the majority of adults who use the computer for light duty tasks.

Even many college students would be fine with this over a laptop. You can't underestimate the number of people who use the computer JUST for Facebook and light web browsing.

I have so many relatives who have dedicated computer rooms and giant monitors with over powered machines attached just so they can log on for 10 minutes in the evening to forward a chain letter with adorable cat photos. . The only thing missing is a camera so those same entry level users can post things to eBay or class project.

For a business person or someone in one on one sales they can share brochures or product info in full glory something that can't be done on the iPhone or Touch and impress the clients.

Let's not forget teachers, lecturers, medical professionals and many other applications where a small phone isn't large enough but carrying a laptop around like a platter isn't appealing either.

I think we need to wait and see on this. Its a good price for education and organizations with the option of all the time connectivity. I think the important thing to remember is the value of this to people who aren't like the users at macrumors.com (i.e. tech savvy).

Why is the title "Apple Releases iPad Tablet"? Apple Hasn't released iPad..they only announced it

People are always whining.

Complaining about the screen being 4:3. Hello, how would you do any typing on a 16:9 screen? You wouldn't have much screen real estate left.

Too large bezel. Hello, I want to hold that thing without obscuring the view and accidentally touch the interface.

It's too expensive. Considering a small screen 32GB iPod touch costs $299. And I'm sure the price will go down.

Wider screen = wider spacing on the keys, more capable typing. When Steve said "the keyboard is almost like the one on a laptop" (words to that effect) I nearly choked. It's a 9.7" diagonal screen which means about 7.5 inches wide (in landscape mode). I'm on a Tablet PC at this moment and it's got a 12.1" LCD (1400x1050) and lemme tell ya, if the keyboard was only 7.5" wide it would be awfully tough to type on.

The bezel thing is a given, they waste so much space with that it's not even funny. If it was half the size it currently is (half as thick/wide) they'd easily have a 10.1 or 10.5" panel with actual 1280x720 resolution or better.

Lackluster, that's all it is.
