Hey, listen much? its unlocked buddy.

Maybe YOU should try listening. The iPad does NOT have 3G support for 1700MHz (T-Mobile) or CDMA at any frequency (Verizon) among others. The unlocked comment was in reference to international carriers.

Now let's see some partnerships.

I want to be able to view the DishNetwork/DirecTV program guide from my iPad, select shows to record without having to put the menu over what I'm watching.

A universal remote app that supports profiles. So I can click movie, and have it dim the lights, switch the components to their proper settings, etc.

I guess I'll have to build my home website to gather the data I'd like from numerous sources since I can't put widgets on the desktop.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

Navigon is going to look nice on this

Not sure I'll be buying one as it seems a little anemic to me but using Navigon should be a nice experience (or TomTom).

Is MBA the way to go over this? I'm looking for a lighthearted laptop/tablet and waited for this, only to feel that the MBA will be a better value in the long run.

Has there been anything official on exactly what resolution the screen has? Has it been confirmed that it's OLED?

As a PMP, id consider this if the resolution was good.

Hard to believe people are actually complaining that the iPad screen isn't widescreen 16:9. Why? You don't like horizontal black bars when watching your movies?

The size of the movie image is limited by the horizontal width of the screen. So unless the iPad was designed much wider than it is now, the actual size of the movie image would remain the same, even if the screen was 16:9.

And in that case, it would loose a good deal of usable screen, and would look pretty stupid in portrait mode. 1024 x 768 at 132 dpi is fairly decent for a 9.7" screen. Think about it a little.

At first I was excited, rolling with the hype and setting expectations that this device failed to deliver.
iPad - where is the stylus? How can you take hand-written notes? How are you supposed to use it as a "pad?" A notepad? To take notes in class? How does that work? Typed notes?

I was really hoping it'd have a stylus so I could use it as a notebook (paper notebook to take notes in school...) Without a stylus or a way of recognizing handwriting, how the heck are we supposed to use this device to take notes in class? You'd say "there's an app for that - Pages.." but no, what about writing down math, chemistry, physics notes...sketching a quick graph and plot a few points, etc.

To me, it's just a giant glorified iPod Touch/iPhone(minus phone). Steve's most exciting product of his career? Hard to believe. Over-hyped? You bet.
:(

USB Question

With the USB adapter can you use it for external hard drives and/or cd-roms?

I was expecting some sort of e-ink mode for reading ebooks. w/o that, I don't see that reading ebooks will be all that great on this. This thing is just a giant ipod touch with support for 3g.

Looking around the lecture hall I'm in right now, I'm seeing a few people looking at the iPad on Apple's site. I think the more informed people (including myself) have lost sight of how consumers buy things.
The iPad is easy
The iPad is fun
The iPad is pretty
The iPad is cheap
The iPad will sell like mad

Welcome to the new era. God help us.

Sold

I'll be getting one for sure. I carry a 15" MBP everyday to school, just to use it for basic stuff, big projects are done at home connected to my Wacom and 24" monitor. This'll save me 4lbs on my back every day. Having iWork available sealed the deal, and as an Industrial Designer, I'll use the hell out of that Brushes App. I have it on my iPhone and it's great, but the screen is so small it's unusable for anything practical. I love reading and surfing the web in bed at night, laptop is hot on my lap and iPhone is okay.... This will be great!

So looking back...

All those iPad photos we saw were utterly fake.
Until maybe those few surfacing from China today.

FAKE. FAKE. FAKE.

I wish one or two were real, but Apple kept the product well sealed up.

It will have a niche, but here's who it will not serve:

-Visual Designers (unless I'm wrong). touch screen is great for typing and browsing a UI- that's pretty much it. Now how can I use this device to draw a sketch with? can I use a WiFi connected pen-tablet as input device?
- Multimedia authors. So it's great for Internet communications but will I be able to download video files from my camcorder, do a rough edit as with FlipShare and upload the finished file?
- The 'camera' with a 10" screen is awesome. Just hope it shoots 1080p and takes accessory lenses.

More griping later...

Think 1-2 years down the line.

This thing will gather a crazy amount of steam. It's all about the App Store and its ecosystem. As the iPad evolves, so will the software, or rather, "apps."

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Less than a netbook for more money.

No multitasking--an Apple tradition.

No camera--so no skyping, no teleconferencing.

Who's going to carry this thing? Maybe women with a really large handbag, but how about for men? Maybe a really large fannypack to carry around their MaxiPad--I don't think so. And if it's not portable what's the point--you might as well have a desktop. Even a netbook, once folded, is more portable.

The iPhone and Macbook Pro are getting old and lame and need a revamp.

yeah man, the iphone is SIX MONTHS OLD!!! WTF!!! that is so LAME! and OLD! stupid 6 month old phone!

phones should be like disposable contacts, where you can unwrap a fresh one every day.

but then, every evening... you'd be disappointed by that OLD LAME IPHONE! stupid day-old iphone!

I can't stop yawning!

No multitasking makes this a HUGE yawn!

Wonderful concept, poor OS.

Apple should really get off their butts and work on their OS before they put it on a device that would scream with multitasking and flash.

This isn't a computer, it's a FAT stretched out iPod Touch/iPhone hybrid that has a few more bells and whistles. Nothing that would ever replace a 13" MBP or MBA.

While I am personally disappointed it doesn't have a video camera, I think it will be a HOT seller. Just think of everyone without iPhones. Now, they can get an iPhone like computer for only $499.

Think of all the grandparents who will love how easy it is to do what they need to do.

Think of all the college students now torn between a very cool $499 iPad and a $1,000 boring old computer.

The techies hate it, but I think the average Joes are going to love it.

Ibook reader people keep mentioning. Well you will hurt your eyes reading a book on this. its not like the kindle with the ink technology. I guarantee you when the reviews come out this will be the biggest complaint.

I think it will attract a different kind of media consumer. Voracious readers who want nothing more than the monochrome paper-like look and feel of the Kindle and Sony's readers will not come flocking, sure, but they also won't be getting full-screen color periodical content or video either.

I'm a former Sony PRS 505 owner, and I can tell you, paper-like or not, reading on the Kindle and like devices is not the Nirvana those manufacturers made it out to be. Better in broad daylight than an LCD or OLED, but they can't hold a candle to a color display for anything richer than text, and utterly useless in dim lighting.
