Screens are scratched

Is it just me, or are all the screens scratched on the photos of the iPad on the Apple site. Really noticeable on the pricing page.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

The question for me before the event was "why would someone with an iPhone and a laptop want this?" and I don't think that's been answered. There are times when it would be the best choice of the three - traveling, sitting on a couch or laying in bed, for ebook reading, etc.

But I don't think it's enough. It's not powerful enough to replace a laptop or portable enough to replace a smartphone. So it's a third mobile device, and while it will sometimes be more useful than either of the other two, I don't think it's more useful by enough to justify a third device.

Of course, I have been saying that about netbooks ever since they became popular, and they sell great. And I can see more upside to this than a netbook. But I'm not sold on it.

And for the record, I like it. I mean, the implementation is really good. I just think it's good implementation of a product category il not sure I need. (and I was a first gen adoptor for both the iPod and iPhone).

I would think Apple is going to take over the Kindle on this one.

I think this device is an awesome concept and this device is for people that would normally get a NetBook. What NetBooks are used for this device does it all.

I am sure I am only getting the 16GB + 3G device. One movie or two at a time isn't more than I would need. Syncing is never a problem with me to change stuff out often.

I will use this device a lot just sitting on the couch watching TV at night.

It is sad to see from the Presentation there is no Flash Support still. This holds the device back from being one of the best Internet browsing devices.

We also need to see Magazines released on this device I think. I would subscribe to magazines with a digital release. More profits for those companies. Would save on printing and postage and give a more interactive approach to reading them.

Have to say I'm not interested. If I needed a netbook, I might be, but I was more interested to see if the AT&T deathgrip would be loosened. Service is getting worse instead of better, and as much as I love my iPhone, I'll be having to get rid of it and move to a better carrier that can provide service where I am. One part of me is hoping that the 3G version of this device sells really well so it can fully bring AT&T's network to its knees, forcing them to get the service up to speed.

The iPad is very much like the original iPod. It didn't do a whole lot at first, but after only a few years it grew and grew into an amazing product. That's how Apple works. Start simple and build and build at a steady pace. This is how you don't end up with a bunch of features no one needs or wants which only complicate the device. This is the same way. The iPad is ok. The iPad 3.0 will be a must-have item.
Why not just come out with the must-have item now? This has been like 15-years in the making.

"This screams!" Yeah, no s*it... it can only run one slimmed down application at a time.

What a truly pathetic debut.

pdf viewing

I am an academic, so unless I can download and view pdf documents (i.e. scholarly articles in pdf format from major journals) the iPad is useless to me. Is there a way to download and view pdf documents, or can I only view them in safari?

The iPad needs to be able to download and organize files from the internet, movies, pdf, etc. Otherwise, it's not particularly useful for anything beyond casual surfing.

Well besides all the disappointments and happiness, at least we can be glad that Steve is healthy. God bless you. :D

Screen size example

If you have a 13.3” laptop (MacBook/Air/Pro), here’s an image you can display that shows the size in inches (not pixels) of the iPad’s screen (not outer case).

These images are 888x666, but on the iPad those same inches would display more detail: 1024x768. (13” MacBooks have about 114ppi, and the iPad has about 132ppi. Courtesy of Pythagoras.)

So this is just to help judge physical screen size. Click to download, and make sure you’re viewing at true original size (hit Command-Zero in Preview for instance).

Meh got a netbook like others have said my ipod touch a 17inch laptop and a mobile phone i see no use for a giant ipod touch plus lacks any innovation i have come to expect from apple. About the only thing that dose sound deacent on it is actualy nothing sounds deacent about it .

Mr jobs and co epic fail simply you hyped this thing up so much you forgot to make something that was worth the hype. ..

Black cloths red lights top secret my backside this is not magical its embarking on the ridiculous. ..

more like because PC tablets don't sell anyway. better than no sale, is not exactly any better.

PC tablets don't sell because the experience of using one just sucks. I speak as someone who's owned 3 of them over the past several years.

All the netbook guys just don't get why the iPad will be hugely successful. For the majority of consumers, it's not all about specs and whether something has Firewire 400 ports, it's about the overall experience using it, comfort and ease of use. Most people don't need any specialized capabilities and frankly they tend to confuse non-techies.

Strictly from a design point of view I'd say this started as a failure. You look at what the device is, and what products they are already marketing it with. First the dock/keyboard, which pretty much says you'll prefer using this with a keyboard over a the onscreen keyboard. But what really bothers me is the case. Here they make this stand/case combo that has a upright and on table (slanted version) position. This should have been part of the product. You could integrate this into the product.

There isn't a real effective solution to holding the device and typing. It requires you have it on a surface and using both hands to type in landscape mode.

Sure they act like its easy to use, a great solution, blah blah. But as a "tablet" its still missing pen input. Is that not half the reason most people want a tablet?

Will it sell, of course, just like the MBA or ATV. Is it changing the world, no. Not yet.

No multitasking makes this a HUGE yawn!

Wonderful concept, poor OS.

Apple should really get off their butts and work on their OS before they put it on a device that would scream with multitasking and flash.

This isn't a computer, it's a FAT stretched out iPod Touch/iPhone hybrid that has a few more bells and whistles. Nothing that would ever replace a 13" MBP or MBA.

It's funny. A few years ago, the iPhone had the clear advantage in OS

Today? It's got the apps, but it appears that the OS is starting to lag

Disappointed by the os, they just enlarged the screen size from the iphone and spaced out the icons. I know people are familiar and like the iphone os but a little customization to optimize the extra space would have been nice. Also it needs to set it's self apart from the iphone, at least slightly newer/different look and feel. When I see this thing it looks like a giant iphone, I like my iphone but I associate it with slow internet browsing, slow speed navigating around, etc.... I can just see this chugging along on a 3G connection loading webpages and how frustrating that would be.

Can we also get an easier way to save files, maybe a usb connection to be able to use flash drives? I don't think this takes a big enough step toward laptop capabilities. I know they don't want this to take away from laptop sales, but it just doesn't do enough to justify lugging this around.

Ibook reader people keep mentioning. Well you will hurt your eyes reading a book on this. its not like the kindle with the ink technology. I guarantee you when the reviews come out this will be the biggest complaint.

I guarantee that you are wrong.

What kind of screen are you using now?

Blah blah. The haters come out, as usual.

1024x768 IPS LED-lit 9.7" display. Like the new iMacs, the display is KEY. People like the pretties, and this is DAMN pretty! I can't wait for it. :)

As usual? I've never seen so many. My gosh! They're here in DROVES! Even the fanboys are screaming mad. :(

Why do you keep saying that? It can't be used on either T-Mobile or Verizon's network.

Because people keep insisting that it requires a contract or that it can only be run on ATT. Obviously the hardware needs to be compatible, I was just talking about the fact that the hardware is unlocked.

T-Mobile's website says they support GSM 1900. What makes you think that it's not compatible?
