Yes, you may be right: perhaps there is a niche - but I don't think it is very big.

I think that, due to the iPad's size, most people will either opt for: a) the same technology in a smaller, more portable, and cheaper package (called the iPod Touch), or b) a full-fledged and far more capable computer such as the MacBook, even though it is heavier, more expensive, and not as "fun."

Certainly possible. I'm sure Apple wouldn't be upset if this appeals to enough people to generate, say, a million sales in the first year. One in 300 people in the US would cover that. Obviously they'll take as many as they can get, but there are just so damn many people on the planet today that niches can be very profitable. We'll see!

- Apple seems not to learn too much from it's mistakes. Check out what I wrote about the MacBook Air. The point is, for every 5 hits, they deliver a miss. This is a miss. Premature and hardly anything Kindle should worry about. Indeed, I'll wager $1,000 that Kindle will drop in price by 25% by April ;) That will make the iPad, instantly overpriced by comparison
OK.
That's it for me.

Agree with you that it is a 1.0 device. Do miss the camera. But anything else? I hate Flash.

I'm not with you on the MBA. I'm typing on one now. It does everything I want from an ultraportable laptop. For everything else, I've got a Mac Pro.

And as for the Kindle, the minute I can check my e-mail, the weather forecast and my stocks on it, watch a presentation and catch up on the news in full color... nah, didn't think so.

At least six items on your list, including the first and last ones quoted here, are just plain wrong with what we know already. At least six more will be proven so before it launches.

In other words, welcome to "I Can't Even Be Bothered To Read a One Page Product Information Sheet Before I Postville", population you and half of this forum.

new markets

I'm actually comforted by complaints that iPad doesn't make a better iPhone, or can't replace a MacBook. I mean, isn't that the point?

iPad is creating a new market category. It's not encroaching on existing segments already covered by other Apple products. There are people (not on macrumors) who don't own an iPhone or MacBook because they don't need to have one, but maybe those same people will find use in an iPad. I feel like my grandma could use an iPad, or maybe school kids who don't need a full-fledged laptop might use iPads. (but gosh, i really dislike the name. MacTablet would have been better)

The iPad isn't eroding current Apple markets, it's fulfilling a new one.

Learn to read the specs, troll.

Yes GPS
Yes video-out
Yes bluetooth and keyboard
Yes HD playback (720p)
Yes 64G, not 64mbs

and many other things can be done in software (syncing etc.)

But please, don't buy one. You probably wouldn't understand it.

No Ability to run custom Apps not preapproved by Apple and sold via the App Store = what a relief! no virus and spyware risks
A Very Low Resolution Display with 25% fewer PPPs than the iPhone or iPod Touch - good as my old 20" white iMac with an IPS screen- was awesome
No integrated TV antenna or Radio antenna (They even developed a HD DTV Tuner for use in cellphones to allow users to pick up OTA HDTV signals on the go! Why they didn't include this technology in this device I won't understand) - streaming from internet is the 'future' perhaps?
No Video Out - really? you sure about that?

No Gamepad attachment for Gaming With Physical Buttons/Tactile Feedback - subjective needs
No bluetooth, or ability to connect to a bluetooth mouse/keyboard -
No RFID/IR to use it as a remote, or to tag it to yourself - ?
No Replacable/Removable Batteries - what Apple kit does?
No Java or Flash support (no hulu.com) - thank goodness!

Yes, like the iPhone you will be able to run music while you browse. Also it will have push-notification. Apple have just removed the ability to 'over-run' apps -that is a common failing of mobile OS's is that people launch apps and then forget to close them meaning they stay running. Apple have taken care of the 'good' multi-tasking you need but restricted the 'bad' multi-tasking that get's most users and systems into trouble.

I haven't used it but I'd expect the apps to be a lot of fun and well thought out. Put it this way, buy it , if you don't like it send it back under the 14 days money back returns - what can you lose?
------------------

Flash adoption has ground to a halt and is imminently on it's way out. Maybe a wierd way round it but you could get a terminal app for your iPad and then remote desktop to your iMac and run the browser on that for essential flash websites. Essentially that would make your iPad a 'remote screen' to your iMac - pretty cool huh!

Good multi-tasking vs. bad multi-tasking?? Seriously? Apple leaves at least three of their "good" apps open when you quit them normally - mail, Safari and iPod. The iPod is left open even when there is no music playing at all. Why is this OK? Why does Safari need to stay running in the background? The only good that has ocme of that is some developers have taken advantage of it to stream something in the background via Safari/Quicktime. An example is most of the police scanner apps.

Flash adoption ground to a halt and imminently on its way out? Please quote your source. I come across tons of web sites that extensively use flash for video (e.g. MSNBC, HULU, etc...). I am not for/against Flash. I could really care less, but the reality is that many sites use it a lot. Maybe they will not a year or two from now. Who cares. We are talking about now.

So... I'm thinking use an iPad [Wifi] + Skype instead of any cell phone at all. I'm in wifi when at home & work (85% of my waking life). Maybe use a pay-as-you-go cell for the times I'm not in a hotspot as backup.

Whaddaya think? A bit different - maybe even a bit inconvenient. But when it's technically POSSIBLE to use VoiP and IM instead of PAYING $90 per month for unlimited talk+texting... how we allow ourselves to be suckered in is baffling.

Drawback to using the iPad+VoiP app as a phone: awkward to use earbuds instead of just holding a rectangular box up to my head.

Answer: um... well, I guess it's what we're used to. iPad pairs w/ bluetooth earpiece, I think. Just a matter of the habits we have. Just like the transition from email to wave, I think the move away from traditional cellular "minutes" and "texting" will take a while and come with plenty of doubters and nay-sayers. But honestly, progress Will happen. ;)

Hmm... only a matter of time before someone jailbreaks this to allow tethering to my MacBook.

Yeah. A 10 inch OLED screen at a density of 252 ppi does not sound like a $500 device.

Exactly. Is anyone shipping a device with a touchscreen that size at that density for that price?

Photos, check. iTunes, check.

But does it have all the functionality of iPhoto yet? Cropping, fixing redeye, all the sorting features, the ability to upload to a website?

And if they can do iWork, why not iWeb on this? I'd love to dump my "kitchen" box for one of these, but no deal if it can't do those two. Hopefully both are coming sooner or later.

Have fun saving its files...

If iPhone doesn't support it already, I don't see why Apple couldn't add syncing of "documents".

I need a good large screen ereader. With an eye straining LCD screen this is not it. DAMN I really was hoping too :(

You really thought Apple would release a device that only does black and white?

1) Apple Apps - they are running for a reason. a) to run music concurrently b) to recieve mail c) I don't know why Safaris stays running. Regardless that's not the same as a user leaving 50 apps running. The app dipping rate on an iPhone is far quicker than on a desktop OS and so this makes sense. I've used win mob after ignorant users leave apps running - it's part of why it's a disaster.

2) mmh, NBC Universal - hardly surprising given their animosity towards Apple! Really, offered a future internet with or without flash which would you prefer ? I've nothing against Adobe but Flash is a resource hog and buggy as can be. Once Youtube removes Flash then pretty soon the rest of the net will follow. Adobe have been given plenty of time to sort it out - they haven't - so people are voting with their 'click-to-flash'. I'd not want rid of it if it didn't behave like a piece of malware

All of this bickering and debating reminds me of the first iPhone. The device is cool, the content isn't there, and the next few versions will improve it - then the masses will buy it.

I will admit the ipad is exactly what I expected and that is a little disappointing because it was hyped as revolutionary and magical. However it has potential and I am sure it will reach it over time. Apple does need a new naming scheme though - ipad just sounds lame.

In 2 years I bet most of us will have them but I have no immediate intention of buying v1.0

I'm actually comforted by complaints that iPad doesn't make a better iPhone, or can't replace a MacBook. I mean, isn't that the point?
....

The iPad isn't eroding current Apple markets, it's fulfilling a new one.

I am sure Apple hopes you are right....although they haven't identified the new market yet. Apple should have built their tablet with better specs, free wireless (like Kindle), and an SD card slot to say the least. As far as user input, they didn't need to allow for external keyboard, they needed a stylus and handwriting for note-taking. As it is, we have our Macbooks/Macbook Pros for laptops, our iPhones for cell phones, music, youtube, and games. So what do I need a poorly implemented tablet that functions rather large iPhone for?

Sounds very revolutionary to me.

hey - heres an idea Apple - rather than enter the world of gimmicks and toys, why dont you spend a little more time sorting out your pathetically expensive and crap server line up?
or are you really aiming to become a glorified consumer gimmicks firm?

Oh my God I see what you did there. Props.

What i want to know is... say im working on a pages document, and want to include a link to a website... Do i have to save my document, close it, open safari, find my site, copy the url, close safari, open my document back up and paste it in? what a PITA! BRING ME MULTITASKING and ill consider your tablet useful for more than entertaining myself... oh and offer me HULU or something equivalent, I dont want to pay hundreds of dollars for TV just to have to go and pay apple again to catch a show I may have missed...

And shake the iPad when I need to undo the paste :D

Did Apple buy delicious library? iBooks looks like it?
Guess they're reusing the iBooks name now. :)
I assume the missing Stocks/weather/Clock apps are just because this isn't a finalized product yet (would seem odd for Apple to drop these).

Pluses

+Small size and weight
+Decent design (although I wonder if it lays flat on a table and how scratched up the back will get).
+Prices are great, but makes the iPhone look overpriced in comparison now ($299+contract for 32GB vs $599/729 with no contract for 32GB iPad)
+Finally a wallpaper for the home screens.
+ Decent battery life (although I still prefer removable batteries in general).
+ Not locked to AT&T (of course, it seems it'll only work with AT&T in the US, but at least traveling internationally may be easier)

Minuses

-Not a Mac OS X device
-It *IS* just a big IPhone/iPod Touch (I'm sure some people will complain that it's not, but it really is)
-Only 64GB of storage max. This type of device needs 128GB at least
-I certainly hope that the home screen can handle more icons with a smaller grid spacing. They're so spread out it looks wasteful.
-Seems the iBook app is only on the device, so I'm assuming you can't read them on Mac or PC via iTunes. Really would be nice to buy and browse on a computer then sync to the device as well (like we're used to doing with all other Apple media).
-Locked to the App store only,
-I wonder how much censorship will be imposed on the iBookstore
-Glossy screen (in general, I hate glossy screens, but for a device to read books/mags? Ridiculous to have a glare screen)
-It's that size and they can't even provide STEREO speakers? Wow, bad decision.
-No camera
-Still no data info on the lock screen (new mail indicators/weather, etc...)
-Use it on AT&T's already overloaded 3G network
-No multitasking/background processes
-Specs also don't say iwork apps can output Office formatted docs (says they can import) Makes it hard to send to business users (although RTF should be readable by Office, sometimes people need it in Office format exactly)

In the end, if it could run all Mac OS X programs I'd pay 2-3 times what they are charging. But I don't need a big iPod touch, so no sale here.

You'd be comparing a quad-iPod touch (since the iPad is effectively that) against a real full blown computer which doesn't make it a fair comparison.

The iPad is no match for even a $250 Netbook in terms of actual computing usage at this precise moment in time. The Netbook does more, with more functionality, expandability, upgradability, real USB ports, potentially a larger higher resolution screen, etc...

Simple.

And yes I know you're comparing it to a Tablet PC, so... the 7+ year old Toshiba M205 Tablet PC I'm dictating this reply on (yes, dictating it) is more useful and powerful and capable than the iPad, and I paid $700 for it.

Ahh....so you greatly overpaid (adjusting for inflation) in 2003 even if you bought it in Hong Kong. Too bad. It's so cool that you're such a busy guy that you're dictating (yes dictating!). Yawn.
Of course, it's always the device with waaaay more features and specs that people want---or maybe not because most users don't use the features that techies think are so awesome. I saw a study once that only 1% of computer users use even a single expansion port. So much for the need for expandability.
Upgradeability: To what? Most RAM is resting most of the time. Most hard drives are never filled in the last decade or so.
Netbooks are incredibly s-l-o-w, I guess you just forgot to mention that. And regarding USB...you have heard of wireless and bluetooth, right?
Potentially higher resolution screen? How does that work, just trade the screen in? Oh, you mean some netbook somewhere, sometime, might have a higher resolution screen. Wow, I'll keep it in mind. Of course the human eye can only resolve up to about 300 pixels per inch in a flat image at 18", so some of this screen resolution stuff is just digital masturbation.
