ARE THERE SERIOUSLY NO USB PORTS!?!?!? This went from "best product of all time by a longshot" to "completely awesome" to "need to get one" to "wanna get one" to "pretty cool" to "okay" to "epic failure!"

USB was a passing fad. the iPad has bluetooth which is in every way better.

One problem with USB is that USB ports must provide power to whatever you plug into them and I'm sure the iPad's battery is not up to the task.

Bluetooth provides every function to USB does, except power.

What I want to know

Does it have iTunes with airtunes capability? (Sit on the couch and beam music from the pad to the stereo would be very nifty).

If not, I hope it has the "Remote" app. (Actually hope it has the Remote app either way).

Will the pad's version of Safari be exactly like the iPhone's or any more functionality? Thinking here of using Google Docs -- read-only on the iPhone -- if the pad's safari will allow text entry in GDocs that would be a nice bonus.

iBooks: will there be some mechanism for self-publishing? Kindle has a system for this. I am hoping the pad would allow a similar transformation to open up individual publishing the way the app store allows individuals and not just big companies to sell apps.

I am little puzzled at to the target market for this device.

The iPad is not aimed at artist or developers because of the lack of CPU power and the lack of stylus pen.

The iPad is not aimed at business users on the go because the device is not mobile enough and we already have the iPhone to cover this aspect.

The iPad seems to be aimed at users who uses their PC lightly, (E-mail, surf the internet) like mothers and grandparents.

Perhaps the iPad aimed at students for note taking in class.

There is NO CONTRACT. You can use it with ANY CARRIER.

NO YOU CANT. It does not support 1700MHz GSM (TMobile) or CDMA (Verizon) for example. The UNLOCKED comment was really in reference to International customers.

Not Revolutionary

This is a nice looking piece of equipment but for the life of me I can't figure out what purpose it serves...
If this product came with multitasking or the ability to install applications from OS X in .dmg format I could see a use, however all this is right now is an over-sized iPod Touch that becomes an ebook reader (sorry ibook reader). There is no built in iChat or video chat or even a microphone for that sort of thing. It would have been nice if they allowed multitasking w/ their new iWork suite along with a video camera and iChat for presentations/meetings/conference calls.. I could go on with what i think this product needs but its probably all stuff people have said already. However it strikes me as a little naive of Apple to release this product at this time and not taking into account what users actually want to see/use with their computers but if I was to buy something at this point it would be a mbp not an iPad, it does a lot more for not so much more money.

This will revolutionize the medical app market

Think about it. Doctor's couldn't effectively show medical information to patients on a small little iphone. It's too small. Way too ineffective. But now, with bigger touch screen it will make it awesome. You could so use all those good anatomy apps way more easily now.

That is where the dollars are going to be.

still with the at&t?
why steve?
it really sucks. i can't believe you guys haven't learned anything.

by only offering it with at&t you've just turned off SOOOOOOOOO many people.
i'm just going to assume that no one from apple reads any of these threads ever, or just doesn't care.

you've got to start working with other providers in the US.

please for the love of god, do us all a favor and jump off of the at&t bandwagon.

if it's some sort of loyalty/thank you for the iphone i can almost understand it, but please throw us a bone-you've got to help out the consumer from here on out. and only offering service with at&t isn't helping us one single bit..

Maybe verizon wouldn't give them a $30/mo. unlimited deal (since they charge double that for their wireless cards for laptops?)

If you want to pay "full" price you could velcro a verizon or sprint powered Myfi to the back of it ;)

The next step

The next mac books need to have the ability to run iPad apps or even better, have the A4 chip inside so it could be either an iPad or a mac book. Dual boot.

he keynote could have been 5 minutes long. "Hey we took the iPhone and made it bigger, booya!" I can't believe this is it.

Sounds very revolutionary to me.

hey - heres an idea Apple - rather than enter the world of gimmicks and toys, why dont you spend a little more time sorting out your pathetically expensive and crap server line up?
or are you really aiming to become a glorified consumer gimmicks firm?

The "gimmicks and toys"--iPod, iPhone, and so on--are changing the industry. So get used to them.

Not sure.

I like a lot of poster was expecting a lot more. I just don't see a need. I have an iMac, 13" MacBook, 3 iPhone 3GS's and 2 1Gen Touches in my household.

This is really nothing more then a large Touch. Everything they demoed today I can do on my iPhone or Touch.

My biggest disappointment is the use of the iPhone OS. I was hoping to be able to use the iPad more like a netbook.
No multitasking is a big negative.
Safari and the lack of Flash support are two more negatives for me.

I'm also now pissed at what Apple has been charging for the Touch. The iPad starts at $429 yet the dam Touch in 64gig is $399?

My goodness people! I hate these kind of statements... do people not realize companies... ALL OF THEM... are in business to make money?

What kind of statements?

Some dude said that Steve Jobs was being greedy because AT&T was charging too much.

I pointed out that AT&T's profits don't go to Steve.

What do you "hate" about that?

Ummmm no. What happens when you don't get cell signal? You have a weak little GPS receiver trying to compensate. Dedicated GPS systems always work better.

Assisted GPS uses cell phone towers to QUICKLY home in on the GPS location before all satellites are acquired.

When you first start up a regular GPS receiver half way across the country from where you last used it, it can take a few minutes for it to locate its position. Assisted GPS provides a good guess to help home in. Once all the "birds" in the sky are tracked, it falls back to using the GPS receiver by itself

I was thinking more about this since my initial reaction. You and I have come to the same conclusion, and I can start to understand this product more. That still doesn't change the fact that the iPad is not revolutionary at all. It brings nothing new to the table other than a 10" screen. It's just a giant iPhone.
If Apple didn't bill it as the most revolutionary product ever, I wouldn't be nearly as disappointed.

Exactly!

It's exactly what I thought it would be, I couldn't possibly imagine them doing anymore than what the iPade actually is.

But don't bill the D@mn thing as being so friggin 'revolutionary', and 'magical'. That bit in the video about not being able to comprehend how something works.... what a serious joke.

It's a big iTouch. The battery life is great, but realistically, netbooks can do more! For less! Just wait for Micro$oft to one one-up Apple, because they def. left the door open for improvements!

I can see who this product is for: But it sure isn't for me.

Pah.

sooo much content now is based on flash. i can't believe you don't realize that.

and by "content" you mean "really annoying ads and grindingly slow, inefficient video / anything else"

maybe i'm just not looking... but i haven't seen anything compelling out of flash for... well, the 10 years you mention.

1024x768 IPS LED-lit 9.7" display. Like the new iMacs, the display is KEY. People like the pretties, and this is DAMN pretty! I can't wait for it. :)

It's absolutely pretty. Apple is great at "pretty." But what would I use it for? I don't see how it makes my life any different or easier. I have a 13" MB Pro. It can do far more than the iPad can ever hope to do, and it's not that much bigger if I want to carry it around. For true portability, I also have an iPhone. So why should I pay an extra monthly fee to AT&T (of all companies) if I want to take my iPad on the road? I just don't understand the market for the iPad. There's no camera, so no photos or video capability. That to me seemed like a no-brainer; what a great conferencing tool it could have been! There's no built-in audio recording capability. It's not a big iPhone; it's a big Touch.

I like the idea of the iBook store, but I should be able to access that on my iPhone or MacBook as well. If iBooks are limited to just the iPad, I predict a colossal fail.

That keyboard dock has got to be the stupidest accessory ever. what year is this?

why wouldn't the dock just have bluetooth built in, so you could use your / any bluetooth keyboard?

actually attaching the keyboard to a dock thing... ridiculously ugly and stupid. and backwards. WTF?

You can use the apple wireless keyboard with the iPad... you don't have to use the dock/keyboard. :)

still with the at&t?
