I was actually really excited for this device, but it doesn't support Flash so it is completely useless for EVERYTHING I wanted to use it for. It's amazing how one little feature you take for granted is left out of the iPhone and now the iPad.

Looks fantastic!!! My only complaint would be the price to add 3G as well as the monthly 3G subscription. I think if you have an AT&T iPhone plan, 3G should be included with an iPad.

Oh the memories...

This thread reminds me of the original iPod thread. They also said there was no market for it and it would fail...

I would really like one (though I can't afford it for a year or so). I will buy the 2nd generation of it though (assuming it will come out in a year).

Sounds fun and I can't wait to go to the apple store and use it in two months.

it's not a giant ipod touch since it also comes with 3G, can connect to a keyboard, has a iwork, etc.

The iPad is very much like the original iPod.

It didn't do a whole lot at first, but after only a few years it grew and grew into an amazing product.

That's how Apple works. Start simple and build and build at a steady pace. This is how you don't end up with a bunch of features no one needs or wants which only complicate the device.

This is the same way. The iPad is ok. The iPad 3.0 will be a must-have item.

QFT.

The iPad = a big iPod.

Give it time, it will become more, but right now it's just a super kindle.

I would REALLY like to know what you use Flash for. I use it for nothing, yet you use it for EVERYTHING.

So with data for my iPhone plus this is going to run me $60 additional a year? I mean, I'm obviously only going to be using one at a time, there should be some sort of combo discount in my humble opinion.

Also, anyone notice the physical difference between the 3G enabled and the non-3G version? That black plastic area?

why at&t ? have you not learned anything apple?

still with the at&t?
why steve?
it really sucks. i can't believe you guys haven't learned anything.

by only offering it with at&t you've just turned off SOOOOOOOOO many people.
i'm just going to assume that no one from apple reads any of these threads ever, or just doesn't care.

you've got to start working with other providers in the US.

please for the love of god, do us all a favor and jump off of the at&t bandwagon.

if it's some sort of loyalty/thank you for the iphone i can almost understand it, but please throw us a bone-you've got to help out the consumer from here on out. and only offering service with at&t isn't helping us one single bit..

here is an interesting thing... perhaps apple should allow tethering on the device via wi-fi and then there is no need for a second unlimited data plan. I pay $30 a month for 6gb in Canada, which I hardly even use.

The iPad looks spectacular, but not as spectacular as it would have looked had it been released before the iphone... Id probably buy one for the kids in the back seat of the mini van to shut them up, but I can't see it replacing my laptop...

although I do like the idea of bring that thing into the bathroom. Honestly, it may be its best use...

Can you print from this thing via network? What is the file structure like as far as saving iwork files etc.

No, it plays h.264. Anyone can make that. It's what the Zune uses, for goodness sake.

As a clearly unsavory character, I can admit I am not the primary market for this or, well anything. So my complaining about only apple files refers to lack of xvid and mkv files. Though some MKV files do use h.264, but I still doubt this will play them straight up. Might just need to ~repackage~.

I see someone is bitter he doesn't own apple stock.

im writing this on a mbp 17 2.66 now.
had an i7 27 inch, but had 2 replacements, and got a refund.
thing is, i dont mind spending my money on things like imac or mbp, because theyre decent. but to spend only around £100 less on a tablet, over buying a base macbook is absolutely pathetic.

Great, another thread for all the people that were expecting a $800 - $1000 tablet with potential 2 year phone contract to whine about getting a $500 device with no contract.

Haha that seems to be a prevailing sentiment.

Amazing. You give people 8 out of 10 things they want and they gripe about the 2 things they didn't get.

This will take care of buying laptops for my employees. It fits right in the middle of our office needs.

Two thumbs up Apple.

This is gonna be a hit with or without a camera. Never thought that a Kindle would sell. People will spend a little more to get alittle more for this thing. It is great and I bet have the people in here that dis it, get one! Look at the people who bought the iPhone (no mms, video, no apps at the start, people still bought it!)

Your right of course they could release an iTurd a new revolutionary form of deodorant that smell bad and as long as it was shiny and from Steve Jobs there are idiots who would buy it. Having reflected on it I feel this version is at best unfinished at worst a toy that is poor value for money.

I had hoped for more, and had been quite excited by this release.

Oh well life goes on regardless :)

According to the tech specs on the Apple website, it does have GPS.

Actually, it's assisted GPS, like in the original iPhone. It uses nearby cell towers & Wi-Fi hotspots to try to triangulate your position. I find that on the original iPhone, this is iffy. Sometimes, it gets you within a few feet, or if you're in a building, right outside. Sometimes, it's several hundred yards away.

It's an iPod touch, more accurately, with 3G capability. Lacking a camera, lacking a decent screen - sorry Apple, but in today's HD world, anything less than a 10.1" 1280x720 screen on such a device is basically unacceptable, really. No mic either, so much for Skype or VoIP usage - of course the headphone jack might support that but, it doesn't say anything in the specs.

1024x768... good lord. And here I am dictating this reply on my 7 year old Toshiba M205 Tablet PC - yes, dictating it with the built in field array microphones with a 1400x1050 LCD.

And sticking it to buyers again with no expansion or an SD card slot which pretty much every other damned device in the same concept/class has had for years. Want more space? PAY US FOR IT. Pretty lame, Apple.

Oh well, we can already start expecting stuff in iPad 2.0 I suppose.

Lackluster at best, for me. Been using tablets for well over a decade and I had higher hopes for this... I'll chalk it up to being a 1.0 version and see what transpires.

Didn't know the iPod touch had iWorks ( write documents, keynote and numbers) on it and was an ebook reader too! Cool if it does, maybe my iPhone does too. I can see everyone using this iPad as a camera too - who has a big camera like that. I say check it out first. I thinks it's pretty cool and will only get better.

Enormous potential... Once i make some upgrades to my wheelchair and pay for a few vacations, I'm on board. :) hopefully at least 1 revision by then.
