All in all this device seems impressive. Obviously this is just launching. As time goes on (like the iPhone), Apple will add new and better features to the device. As it stands currently, this seems to be an awesome student companion.

Developers play a huge roll in whether this device succeeds or flops. The good thing is Apple has a huge application library for it already and as time goes on, it will only grow. The smart thing Apple did was make it backwards compatible with the apps users already have.

The inclusion of iWork was a really good idea. That really solidifies my believe that this will function best as a student companion. I plan to get one when I start back to school.

you really think that apple wont get a portion of that?

No.

They worked out deals for the iPhone that involved AT&T subsidizing the price of the device.

There's none of that going on here, so why would AT&T be sharing any of that money? This is the same as the other 3G netbooks that AT&T provides service to already.

That's strange, my netbook has:

-A trimmed down Core 2 based processor with 2GB RAM
-250GB of storage
-6 hours of battery life
-Can run the full x86 library of apps
-I can download/install apps without going through the App Store
-I can save, edit, and upload documents, pdfs, presentations, spreadsheets etc.
-I can browse the entire internet, including flash
-It has a better resolution
-It can read SD card info, meaning I can move photos from my camera onto it to edit or store
-It has USB slots, meaning I can charge other devices, read from external storage, and even tether a phone
-Oh yeah, it even multi tasks!

Oh, and it's priced less than the cheapest iPad which has fraction of those capabilities. So tell me again, how did netbooks get killed?

because theres too many people like him who have more money than sense.

Why do people care about the lack of a camera? Do people really want to hold up a tablet to take a picture?

it's called video conferencing... you know, that thing laptops/netbooks, and most nokia phones can do.

That keyboard dock has got to be the stupidest accessory ever. what year is this?

why wouldn't the dock just have bluetooth built in, so you could use your / any bluetooth keyboard?

actually attaching the keyboard to a dock thing... ridiculously ugly and stupid. and backwards. WTF?

I agree with you completely, but you're on an Apple-centric board so it'll just get lost in the shuffle (not the iPod shuffle, that is). :D

No Usb Ports!

ARE THERE SERIOUSLY NO USB PORTS!?!?!? This went from "best product of all time by a longshot" to "completely awesome" to "need to get one" to "wanna get one" to "pretty cool" to "okay" to "epic failure!"

It does have GPS. Read the tech specs

No, it does not. I wish everyone would stop saying that.

* Wi-Fi
* Digital compass
* Assisted GPS (Wi-Fi + 3G model)
* Cellular (Wi-Fi + 3G model)

Thats not GPS. Thats approximating your position through AT&T's towers and whatever wifi spot you're connected to. Not GPS.

past the tipping point...

...but not quite far enough for me. Congrats Apple another milestone, but I'll probably wait for Rev II. They certainly left the door way open for updates...

I'm a little ambivalent on it. But the confusing thing for me is understanding why or how in the world this took 'years' to develop? I don't see anything that would have required so long to create. the form factor is basically a stretched ipod, OS is iPhone, etc.

utter garbage.
64gb, 1gHz, no camera, massive bezel, nothing new at all, for $829???
$30 a month for 3g? no thanks, o2 can do unlimited data in the UK for £7.50. I've got my own wifi at home. I would rather have a proper LAPTOP, or a macbook for like $50 more

f*ck you steve, you robbing c*nt. no wonder you reported $4bn quarterly profit.

I see someone is bitter he doesn't own apple stock.

I went from being extremely disappointed in this thing, to realizing that with the standard productivity apps, iwork, and the appstore, it actually fulfills most peoples computing needs. And it's portable. And dockable. And cheap. And it's not ugly to use. I can think of three people off the top of my head that, when their Dell desktops die, this will be a more than ample replacement.

Wireless printing?

And I don't want a crummy third part App for this function. I want to be able to connect my printer cable to my iPad and hit "Print."

I haven't bought a printer in a few years, but the one I have is wireless - the first couple of years of its life it spent in a closet out of view. Why would you want a printer cable dangling to be used only once every so often - wireless should be possible, no?!

There is NO CONTRACT. You can use it with ANY CARRIER.

Any carrier that supports this:

UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
GSM/EDGE (850, 900,1800, 1900 MHz)

which in the US is only At&t but I guess you could get EDGE on T-Mobile here.

I think they meant 125 million iTunes accounts. And yeah the tablet was exactly what I expected it to be at a great price, but I am surprised the ONLY product involved in today's event was the iPad. The iPhone and Macbook Pro are getting old and lame and need a revamp.

Giving money to AT&T = Profits for Steve

Yeah, ok. That makes a ton of sense.

My goodness people! I hate these kind of statements... do people not realize companies... ALL OF THEM... are in business to make money?

It's just cool that we have companies like Apple who want to make money by giving us killer products.

I think people are WAY underestimating the impact of this device. Kindle has been very successful for not much less and the base iPad makes the kindle look like something from the 80's.

Apple said:
Start developing the next generation of innovative applications for iPad with iPhone SDK 3.2 beta.
…
iPad provides new opportunities to create Multi-Touch iPhone OS applications on a larger display than ever.
Closest thing I can find that says what OS the iPad runs.

*high-fives MacFly123*

We made it.

Is there a headphone jack?

Is there a headphone jack?

How long until it's jailbroken and can run VoIP on 3G?

Also, it uses Micro SD sim. Does anyone think an adapter will be made by a 3rd party that allows the use of a iPhone 3GS sim?

Why do people care about the lack of a camera? Do people really want to hold up a tablet to take a picture?

gee, this question has been answered 100 times before.

people want a front facing webcam because they use video skyp a lot.

every netbook has one, every notebook has one. if this is to replace netbooks they should have included a cheap webcam.

this question is so dumb. the ipad has a microphone. why don't you complain about that because who records music on an ipad.

Although nice there is nothing "magical" or "revolutionary" about the device. I was expecting so much more from apple on this one.

I agree. $500 for, as I see it, an oversize iPod Touch or possibly iPhone. It's got all the features of both except the phone. And add that it allows me to read a book. But, I'm not a book reader.

I'd also like to understand how I am supposed to keep the screen from smashing or denting or knicking when I carry it around.

Cool device...could have been cooler. I might pick one up in July after people give it some real world reviews...

i have no need for a giant iPhone.

so disappointed :(

i can buy the Google phone with a 1GHz processor so that is sad as well.

the slim netbooks running OS X with 9 hours battery life will eat this thing for breakfast at a price of only $299.

first time i have been this sad about an Apple release.

ooh well looking forward to the 4G.

At&t :(

The fact there is no Verizon version for the US makes this a non starter for me. I am constantly fed up with AT&T on my iPhone where my data usage is mostly just email and some light web browsing.

As for wi-fi when I am home I might as well use my laptop, phone or desktop.

EXACTLY! I got a very good netbook for $300 (EeePC 1000 HEB) a year ago and with win7 it really flies. I was even surprised when I had a 1.3 megapixel cam and an SD card slot. If I'm feeling crazy, I can even push it to do 720p video. I love my netbook (and I might still even when I pick up a new macbook pro).
