Well....... I keep reading different messages about some people losing their MMS and tethering and some people still having it....

I have both tethering and MMS working on my 16GB 3G....

I'm going to install the update and see what happens.. I'll post my results after the update....

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A400 Safari/528.16)

Man that was pretty quick after news broke. Way to go Apple.

what about a windows phone?

Just curious...if Apple sent this update so quickly I wonder how long it will take Microsoft to send out an update?

BeejiveIM with Push

I wonder if this update will do something to disable being able to send photos using BeejiveIM with Push.

Will this break my phone?

Will this affect the Tethering that I downloaded from 9to5mac.com? I don't want it to brick my phone?

Safari is "snapier", and am i just a ditz or has safari always had a landscape keyboard?

The tethering was still there BUT when i turned on tethering, and then i pressed back to return to the network settings, IT WAS GONE! But benm.at still works, meaning it still lets you go to the site. I will now try to download and install tethering again.

EDIT: I reinstalled tethering on my 32gb 3GS and it is working fine now.

You're right! Safari is snappier and I haven't even upgraded yet! Thanks! :D

Landscape Keyboard has always been there in Safari.

Sorry, I meant does he mean it can switch to landscape mode with the keyboard on when you rotate the phone.

You will get, of course, landscape keyboard when you are in landscape mode already. I don't think he would be surprised to see this and posted it here.

Also to note: right or wrong, Apple (and NOT just Apple) does often consolidate multiple fixes into a single patch and then release them all together. (Which is nice for the user not getting constantly badgered with little updates--just so long as the flaws aren't already BEING exploited of course!)

That's a more likely explanation for taking a month to release, rather than "they tried for a month and couldn't fix it" or "they didn't even try to fix it."

However, whatever their release plans were, they went ahead and released this one fix now instead. Exactly as they should have.

+ freakin 1!!!

They weren't planning on releasing a minor fix. They were going to quietly fix it in 3.1, until a certain someone showed the exploit to the word and forced Apple to release a .0.1 version to please people.

Geeze... if they would have just waited until 3.1 and shut up about the SMS bug, we wouldn't be installing 3.0.1 right now, we'd probably be installing 3.1 on next Tuesday.

Some people get way too bent out of shape about Apple. It's not that Apple was lazy, it's that they had a whole slew of fixes and enhancements rolled into 3.1 and them bastards didn't give them the chance to release it on Apple's schedule.

But supposedly they have known for about a month now.

I just tested what you said in Safari on 2.2.1 and 3.1 and it stays in the same position you start out with. If you're in landscape and you bring the keyboard up, the keyboard will not change to portrait if you rotate the phone.... in both versions.

That was long. It took about 45 minutes. It completely wipes your phone and reloads the OS. So, apparently this is not just some little patch that they add on. They had to wipe and reload the OS. Sheesh, they could have at least enabled MMS if they were going to go through all of that.

Thanks. Then I think he indeed was a bit dizzy, and I should not have wondered about this as this is just a 0.0.1 update.

I'm going to assume you aren't being sarcastic, and point out that the general vulnerability was already known because it affected more than just iPhone(but not EVERY smartphone). That being the case, teh Intarweb doesn't care about anyone's schedule. Teh Intarweb runs at Intarweb 2.0+ speeds.

That's why even though Microsoft officially only releases updates on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, they have done emergency updates at least 3 times, that I myself can recall. The most recent this week.

I'm just going to wait until 3.1, which should be in a 2-3 weeks or so. Oh well, I guess I'll leave my iPhone open to a terrorist-like remote take-over. Besides, if they take it over, they'll realize how slow 3.0 runs on a 3G and move on to a 3GS instead.

All iPhone updates replace the entire firmware in the same way that Sony updates the PS3. MMS is already available in firmware 3.0 and can be 'activated' through a carrier update which is a tiny settings file.

If you are on AT&T you will only get MMS when they allow it and this has absolutely nothing whatsoever at all to do with Apple. Oh, and you would have known this if you had read the numerous posts in this thread which cover the same issue.

"2-3 weeks" Where did you get that number from? Is there some type of official Apple calendar? All I know is that MacWorld is reporting some type of Apple event in September, in which it is rumored that they will be releasing something new, and MacWorld has said maybe it's a Tablet or something else that is hardware. Where did you get the "2-3 weeks" from?

"Android was fixed two days after they were notified. Apple waited 6 weeks, plus 1 day of bad press."

I would hope that it was 6 weeks of app testing that delayed Apple. After all, one of the two phones has a ga-zillion apps and that would be really bad press to break a half-ga-zillion of those while fixing one thing.

Mircrosoft, on the other hand, is too busy trying to get their iPhone knockoff (the iZune) just to function.

Did you have any 3.0 beta versions on your 3G before going to the official release? Our test handsets ran like crap after updating to the 3.0 GM build but after doing a complete wipe and restore to 3.0 GM they were fine and run quickly now. This also fixed an issue with mis-matched icons on the springboard and with the podcasts.

(we also found that after jailbreaking a 3G handset on 3.0 it ran like **** so we wiped it and it ran ok again un-jainbroken) .

This is probably a stupid question, i've only just got my iPhone and hence never done an update before. Does the update delete and reinstall JUST the firmware or does the update COMPLETELY wipe the iPhone install the firmware and then resync your content?

Mark.
