This is probably a stupid question, i've only just got my iPhone and hence never done an update before. Does the update delete and reinstall JUST the firmware or does the update COMPLETELY wipe the iPhone install the firmware and then resync your content?

Mark.

Should just update the firmware. The process usually involves a backup so you should OK. If not...back that ***** up!

Then update...

I'm kind of in the dark about how exactly you go about falling into the trap of this exploit?

Does someone send you a text and BOOM your phone is screwed?

I'm kind of ocd about updating, and i like to do a clean slate update, so i really dont feel like doing it if theres going to be another, more significant update coming fairly soon.

little help?

Apple needs to figure out how to implement a diff update for iPhone OS. I mean a 300MB for a simple bug? They could just release a 512kb update file just to fix the bug. I am curious why they aren't doing a binary diff update for minor software updates like this one.

Differential updates are dangerous. They give hackers an idea where a vulnerability is and create exploits before everyone is updated.

Yes:mad:

Obviously a very carefully designed text message. Probably one that any normal phone user wouldn't be able to create, because it will be in some way violating the rules how correct SMS messages should look.

well i dont really know because i dont use it but the baseband didnt change so i think it should work !!

If you jailbreak an iPhone does that mean you absolutely have to unlock it or can you leave it locked to the carrier? I use my 3g on rogers and that's the only real viable option around here at the moment

You can jailbreak without unlocking and keep it on your current carrier.

you can just leave it locked to the carrier by not installing ultrasn0w from cydia... :)

Mac: "Hi, I'm a Mac."
PC: "And I'm a PC."
PC: "Man, those vulnerability updates are a pain to have to deal with. You're lucky you guys don't have to deal with... oh. Never mind."

True statement!

Apple for a long time was able to ignore things because of the small market share. Apple is a big time player now and customers are going to demand and expect them to stand by those cute little commercials.

Users of 3.0 who are willing to wait for 3.0.1 may wish to wait a while longer. ;P

(saurik is working on something that is going to make this upgrade process a lot simpler for people who are already using jailbroken devices. Note that by "a while" I mean "a week", not "mere hours from now, check quickly and rapidly" ;P.)

I would hope that it was 6 weeks of app testing that delayed Apple. After all, one of the two phones has a ga-zillion apps and that would be really bad press to break a half-ga-zillion of those while fixing one thing.

Mircrosoft, on the other hand, is too busy trying to get their iPhone knockoff (the iZune) just to function.

Yeah, we know Windows is a hairball, but since when did the Theory of Infinite Complexity start applying to Apple? How is fixing a complete and total bug in processing SMS messages going to break a 'ga-zillion' apps? And since when would Apple even give a damn if it broke 5% of the apps? Apple is all about screwing yesterday, long live tomorrow. "If your app is broke by our latest update, then you better get to work!"

Face it: The fix was easy, and it was delayed until the bad press started because Apple hoped to just slide into 3.1 with it. (But what about those 1.x and 2.x phones?? HUH?) What's the excuse for them?
