Apple Releases iPhone OS 3.0

I was getting the unresponsive server message for a while, and it's installing on the iPhone now!
 
Well, I have to thank all of you beta upgraders for the info here. Way too many issues so far. For me, I think I am off to the golf course for a while. I'll check back here later to see if things have smoothed out a bit before I try to upgrade mine.

i just downloaded 3.0 for my ipod touch. It took 3 minutes to download, another 5 to install, but now it is on 35 minutes to backup and counting. WTF I didn't pay $10 for it to take an hour to backup! 😡
 
This plug / unplug thing? Don't need to do it. Just hit the update button under your "Summary" tab.

!4th try was the lucky number for me.
 
wow this thread is quick... I guess other people have seen that message.... I guess we just wait even longer! 😡
 
It's lunchtime in California.

I wonder what percentage of iPhones sold in the US are in California.

Lunchtime in CA rolls around, and the activation server dies. Damn.

Even though MMS is not up on AT&T, there is an option to "share contact" at the bottom of a contact's page. It then exports the contact's info as a vcard to mail.

I'm not sure if this was a publicized feature before or not.

It'll be great to text contact information when MMS is up, but it's nice to at least be able to email it until then.

Finally GOT it to WORK!! WooHOO

It took about 7 or 8 try's to get my phone to communicate with the servers but it is upgrading now. Woohoo!! Just be patient folks Apple is getting Hammered today!! There is no way to avoid this with the amount of load they are getting, it will get better. 🙂
 
... and then I post, wait a couple of minutes, try again and the server seems to be working! And one realises one can forgive it - more than 30 posts were made here in those couple of minutes I waited, just imagine what the activation servers are up against 😉.

Doing a fresh restore: progress bar on iTunes about 80% done, progress bar on iPhone only 25% done, barely a contest!
 
2G unlocked - DO NOT UPDATE!!!

It is now a little later for me that assumed the risk, and for other people that tried, but here goes the ultimate advice for people who have unlocked iPhone 2G and wants to update for 3.0 now:

DO NOT update your 2G iPhones yet!

DO NOT believe the people that tell you that you can update without being locked!!

I just updated mine (I have unlocked and jailbroken my phone many times previously), and now my iPhone 2G is ready only for emergency call.

It is now asking me to connect to iTunes with a supported SIM card, because mine is not supported. An supported SIM card is needed for the activation process.

iPhone DevTeam is working to release a Pwanage Tool today, so let's wait for it...

(Now my iPhone is blocked... Well, thats the price we pay to be on the edge!!)😀😛

Update: it seems that in some countries, for some carriers, it still working just fine.
 
Got the server unavailable error earlier. After a few attempts, I got through the queue. I think there is just a lot of user traffic trying to upgrade right now.
