I confirm that factory unlocked iPhones (= all of them in Belgium) can use tethering again under 3.1.3 even when connected via a 3G provider which isn't the official Apple partner.

Uhhh...

Is this in jest?

When you are composing an SMS/MMS and you are in the To: line, it will use the alphanumeric/QWERTY keyboard, not the number/phonepad keyboard. This is normal, and it's supposed to be this way. It's so that you can type in the NAME of a contact in your contacts database to look them up instantly, instead of needing to know their phone number off the top of your head or force you to scroll through all of your contacts.

Not a bug.

That may have started with MMS to allow you to send a message to an email address. If you turn off MMS and reboot it will come back.

Huh, thanks for the tip, I just turned off MMS and it works now! I didn't even have to reboot. It was that way originally but I guess they DID change it when they added MMS. Mixed feelings about that.

Are you guys using Push and MobileMe for email? Why would it happen to my phone and no one elses? Not only does it waste battery, but it is disctracting to see the screen come on while I am working at my desk.

I connect to our Exchange box through IMAP and I have a secondary GMail account. Yes, Push is turned on.

Someone else has the same problem?

My problem and my wife has the same issue on her iPhone is that once I dial a phone number and they ask me to type some other set of numbers, the iPhone starts blanking the screen and wont let me enter the numbers. For example when calling the credit card company and they ask for your card number.

Doing a hard shutdown sometimes clears the problem but not always.

Anyone else has this issue or knows a fix?

Ive a factory unlocked iPhone from Italy and I cant see tethering with 3.1.3? Can anyone else with a factory unlocked phone check this??

I called it. I said an update was coming after iTunes was updated yesterday. This update is WORTHLESS though. Lol. I thought my battery level was just fine. Lol.

Ohh, my iPhone is snappier. Lol. Yeah, right. Every update we got, we used to say that.

I'm guessing this is the last update until 4.0 this summer. We may get 3.2 in March though.
Updating....

man I have been listening to that joke(Snappy) for almost a decade.

I can remember the Thread. hmmmmmm.........

iPhone OS 3.1.4 (carrier only update) is soon to be expected due to the premature release of tethering in iPhone OS 3.1.3 (for certain carriers).

p.s. This update was originally planned for Friday the 15th but didn't make it due to a certain bug that had to be fixed first.

Trouble-free update on Rogers (iPhone 3G). Definitely much, much snappier than before. Tethering immediately reconnected upon iPhone restart, and my 3G speed is suddenly twice as fast as my previous average. Getting almost 2300kbps tonight, typical 1200bps previously. Awesome!

A user with a factory-unlocked phone and Telecom NZ SIM (not an Apple-approved operator) also reports not being able to enable tethering.

To those that have it working, what exactly did you have to do? Is there a specific APN setting for tethering or does it pick up the "normal" APN? Also, do you have a custom carrier bundle installed?

Update: Confirmed working with Telecom NZ. You need to remove the unofficial TNZ bundle that's been doing the rounds.

Not much for 200MB+ of download. Multiply by 40 million phones or so, and that's a lot of data.

Is it me or has battery life gotten better with this update? I will have to fully charge my phone and test this but it might be so.

Agreed, I thought I was imagining things, but my 3G is definitely smoother on home screen animations (returning to home screen from an open app) and things opening quicker.

The noticed the same thing with my 1st Gen phone. I was running much smoother with this last update. Not as fast as my 3GS but much better than before.

You are dreaming.

Not that much. iPhone OS has gotten a little slower with iPhone OS 2.0, and much more with iPhone OS 3.0. With my old iPod Touch 1st gen I could clearly feel the difference. But it wasn't THAT terrible either. The guy seemed to say the speed was unbearable - clearly not. But yes they really needed to compensate by adding more memory and processing power, but now the iPhone 3GS with 3.0 on it is much faster than iPod Touch 1G with iPhone OS 1.0 ever was.

Btw, this smart playlists bug is totally annoying the hell out of me. It's driving me nuts. I reported it to Apple like 2-3 times on their official feedback report page, with the clear steps to reproduce the bug. They won't fix it. They won't listen to me. And to other people either.

But someone on neowin just told me I could add a new condition in each smart playlist and... it works!

Just add the following :
"Playlist is Music"

This is nitpicking I know but the podcasts scroll up and down is still jerky....I have an Ipod Touch 2G

Sorry but I still like my tethering...not updating.

Oh and ATT, FARK YOU and thanks for constant dropped calls and EDGE taking over 3GS.

You guys say you have the fastest 3G network...maybe but only when you are freaking lucky to have a network signal. I live UNDER a 12 cells right in the middle of Chicago (they are on my own roof) and I still get dropped calls every nights FFS.

If people right next to your Cells get dropped calls what the fark do you think it says about your crappy network.

/endrant
sorry for that

Native Tethering enable again! Thx Apple!

I have an official unlock iphone 3G from Australia with an unofficial carrier in Taiwan. Just updated to 3.1.3 and now have tethering enable. Both USB and Bluetooth working. I'm so HAPPPPPY.

I was missing tethering since i updated to 3.1.2.

I didnt even have to do any setup. The tethering just work in 3.1.3. And my iphone 3G is SNAPPIER as well. The ipod was so slow to load b4 now it loads in 3 secs.

THX Apple.

now just waiting for Arrandale update in the Macbook Air and i'm set. I'm patient since i already have a 2008 white macbook 2.4 GHZ.
