I am very impressed by this SDK. The App Store sounds brilliant and the possibilities for applications seem nearly endless.

I cannot wait for 12/27/08 to come (the date my Verizon contract officially ends). This is what I have always dreamed for in a phone. Hopefully by then 3G iPhones will be out.

people are going to have to live with installer and a few good apps til June

Or installer and have SDK-developed apps before everybody else. It remains to be seen if that's possible, but there's a good chance it is.

SDK is free, commericializing apps is not !

Oh man I posted too soon, you have to pay $99 to get the SDK???? WTF? Argh! NOT cool, Apple. Devs who are developing free apps, at least, should not have to pay.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
MR: "The SDK will be available for free public download today. "
My understanding is that you get the SDK free and you can write your own apps and use 'em on your iPhone. But if you want to commercialize the app, you got to pay Apple $99 as licensing/publishing fee.
This is pretty much an industry norm (BREW for instance)

On the bad side, even if somebody wanted to submit a free app they want to share, they would have no choice but to pay $99 from their own pocket OR ask for a "nominal charge" on iTune apps store !

Great Apple has gotten one step closer to making the iPhone a true performer for me. All they need to do now is make it work on WiMax with Sprint or Verison, or make AT&T step up their game with their slow EDGE network.

Once the iPhone's functionality truly competes with Windows Mobile and Palm OS (very easy to beat competitors) then Apple will have a real smart phone that will really earn them some market share with enterprise/business users, and power users that need productivity apps in their mobile devices.

I can't believe iPod Touch owners are going to complain about this again! Apple gets a part of ATT's revenue every month for the iPhone, so we are basically paying extra each month for the iPhone to get our free updates.

You all are not! Pay the few bucks they charge for a great update! The money will go to great use, since Apple is a great company. Will go into more research and development for better things down the road!

Look, this SDK is already coming out late and the fact that it will be an entire 1/4 of a year before we see anything useful to us makes this not so good.

For crying out loud, what is it with Apple and premature announcements? This is getting ridiculous. It's going to get to the point where people stop paying attention. At least don't build it up like hey here are all these apps you've really been wanting, but oh - wait a minute - they're still vaporware! Jokes on you you stupid Apple fanboy! We don't actually have anything, we're just teasing you and you'll be both grateful and lucky to get squat in at least four months from now!

I'm tired of it. Dammit, this thing should already do instant messaging and exchange. I'm tired of not being able to send a damn picture, an instant message, or use this thing for anything of value besides making phone calls. I shouldn't be teased with a live announcement announcing the very things I have been waiting for only to be told at the end of it that they don't exist yet!

If that doesn't piss you off than I just don't understand. How can it not?

It's not about Apple is good or Apple is evil. It's about managing expectations and not alienating your customers. It wasn't that long ago that Microsoft had to bail Apple out. They ought not forget that. The arrogance is astounding.

People want to moan rather than read things through properly because somehow somewhere down the line Apple owe us freebies because we spent $400 bucks 6 months ago.

The SDK is only a week late. Any expectations about applications being available today were created by the rumor mill and not Apple.

Looks like I hit the entereprise features right on the head, however not sure if they will be encrypting the data in case the phone does not take the erase command. Blackberry does that.

My company wont switch yet, maybe in a year we will switch 90,000 users to iPhone, hard to say.

It is really almost 4 full months (today is only the 6th). March, April, May and June (end of). Overall very good news today - other than the long wait. Does anyone know what is required to get the beta?

Soo... do ADC members get to download iPhone FW 2.0b today?

Their servers are slammed, so I can't check. :(

I may be mixing up my facts, but I believe you have Enron to thank for that.

Sort of. There are different levels of ADC, and I think the free level doesn't get you pre-release software. So, from that perspective...you would have to pay to become a higher level ADC developer.

Apple has said they will not restrict VOIP (voice over IP) applications that use Wifi, but will not allow VOIP applications that use cellular networks.

I wonder if this means that Apple has to approve an applications before it is put on the store or this will be enforced via the APIs.

No, it should have had it from day ONE. Obviously, they realized that they made a mistake. That's what I meant.

can anyone answer is there is like any firmware update today then or what?

Nope, as far as I can see there is NOTHING but the SDK for devos to START making apps on the iPhone without breaking it.

This is the main reason I got the HTC Touch. I never liked AT&Ts network before the iPhone and I hate it even more now. But since the iPhone can't be used a full featured smart phone without breaking it then what's the point? I'd love to just settle for a fancy phone with no buttons and some basic software, but I actually need to do some work.

Hopefully us normal users will be able to download the beta iPhone 2.0 update - those developers need beta testers for their software after all!!

I know people just like to complain.... but.

This was an amazing announcement/update. Few months delay, few dollars here and there means nothing.

The fact that Apple has demoed apps and functionality that essentially address EVERY complaint about the iPhone to date with respect to software.

This SDK does not appear to be limited. The terms are remarkably reasonable. The SDK is free. Download it, learn how to use it, write your own apps. If you want to be able to push an app to iTunes, it will cost you a very reasonable $99. I can't tell if people who are complaining are even actual developers or just think everything should be free on principle.

This iPhone announcement has suddenly positioned the iPhone/Touch to be a remarkable success.
