Apple Releases iTunes 10 With 'Ping' Social Networking for Music

I mean come on, this is an icon we're talking about. One single measly icon. Who cares? This is the kind of crap I'm talking about:

Easy for you to say... it starts with the icon... next thing you know... there is a problem with iTunes 10... and it won't get released... today... tomorrow... whenever...

No need for 64-Bit code!

But is it a 64-bit re-write?

A cookie for the first person who can answer THAT question.

iTunes is already optimized for Intel processors. All Intel based Macs have processors which support at least SSE2 instructions. These do work with 128-Bit data fields (registers). SSE instructions make standard 32-Bit applications up to four times faster. The coming AVX instructions in the Sandy Bridge processors, can make 32-Bit applications eight times faster, because they use 256-Bit data fields (registers).

Or to make a long story short: 64-Bit code does not make iTunes much faster, because most parts of iTunes use already 128-Bit registers and SSE instructions.

Thats what i wanna know to and will it use more then 1 processor of my 8 core so i wont be seeing that beachball

I think the beachball you see comes from the GUI or more precise from the system UI server, and has nothing to do with iTunes. You can try the latest graphics update, and try to reduce the memory usage of other apps.

Argh.

I have literally been refreshing the itunes page for the last 7 hours waiting for this! It's now 2AM :p

They have 6 hours, going by Cupertino time, until it is officially "tomorrow."

Who wants to take bets on if they even post the download link "today?"

Whatever is keeping them from releasing this better be extremely important and I mean extremely important (like world ending important).

For all you crybabies that are whinning about the social network feature no one is going to force you to use it get a life seriously.

I think it's deliberate to lessen the load on their servers. Wait until the East Coast is sleeping.

On that note, though, I caught the very tail end of the keynote stream and it was awesome in terms of how it performed. Just loaded up and displayed quickly. Took about 10 seconds to optimize but was pretty clear after that. I was impressed.

What stress would be on Apple's servers? They didn't release any other software today, and the Store is on a completely different setup.

I kinda remember this moment from the one of the transition between .mac and MobileMe. Apple has learned from the experience of releasing too many products at the same time, at that moment iOS 2.0 was released aswell, iPhone 3G's were activating all over the world and that chain reaction created a total FAIL for Apple servers.

My take in this whole situation is that Apple learned to hold and release the best quality products and apps they can on the first time, because that's an issue customers don't want to face whenever Apple updates their products.

Offtopic: iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2 should be iOS 4 for iPads, iPhones & iPod touches on the first take. Just sayin'.
