So I decided to take the plunge. Not iPhoto because my luck with its updates has been less then stellar. All seems to be working however on boot as I was watching the startup I saw the message "diskarb isn't ready yet; we'll try again soon about 6 times, then it gave up and rebooted. Yes I boot my Mac in verbose mode. I like seeing what is going on in the background instead of a pretty boot screen. Anyone know what diskarb is? Google isn't being overly helpful. :p

So, how many have there been?

I'm trying to count up the number of OS versions (major and minor) since my G5 landed in my hands. It came with 10.2.7, and I believe that I went right to 10.3. (At least I can't recall if I installed 10.2.8 or not.) There were ten releases of 10.3, and now ten for 10.4. I believe that makes 21, with three OS reloads (I clean-install every major version.)

In all that time, I've had no major issues at all. In fact, the only real MacOS issue I've had in that time was at my former place of employment, when 10.4.3 broke NIS/NFS automounting on all the macs I administered.

Having started right at the preview release, I can honestly say that, at least in my case, OS X has worked well as a desktop system, especially since 10.2.It's not quite as robust as Solaris, but it's pretty darned good. Plus, Apple did a wonderful job with networking - many of the System Administrators I associate with have switched to carrying Powerbooks (now MacBooks), as they are wonderful for troubleshooting networks.

Hmmm, I've probably gotten off-topic, but since I've been crabbing a lot about Apple as of late, I thought I'd offer some props as well.

Rebuild the desktop... classic! Brings back memories of all the things you had to do to optimize Finder performance back in the day.

Sounds like most of the issues from the update are coming from folks who have semi-modded their systems; I'd almost bet that the ones who have zero problems are running "stock" systems?

Utter nonsense. Rebuild your desktop while you're at it.

I'm in the same boat as you. My update was corrupt and gave me an error, and I've been stuck at the loading screen for a while. I'm currently trying to fix it - I'll let you know when I am done.

This happend to me also, has anyone came up with a way to fix it?

Maya 8.5 works much better. The CV's not showing up on Mac Pro's with the nvidia card was fixed. Hopefully the constant crashing is fixed as well.

there's a trial of pages? where?

It normally comes on an iWork DVD with the Mac you purchased. Not for download AFAIK.

Update hasn't caused any problems here.

Sorry for the following topic hijack. Could someone try www.ebuyer.com in Safari. I just wanna make sure its not just my browser having trouble viewing the site correctly. The site works fine in opera and firefox.

hmmm, anyone know what the new "Mouse scrolling and keyboard shortcuts" are? Sounds interesting. I guessing the keyboard shortcut could just be the longer eject time on F12.

Hmm - the old sleep shortcut of Cmd-Alt-Eject no longer seems to work. I don't know if this is just on my system or whether this what you mention above. If they have changed this, does anyone know what they have changed it too?

Edit - scratch that - it hasn't changed, they have simply added a slight delay to the shortcut. You now have to hold down the key combination for a second or so, rather than just hitting it like you used to be able to. Fits in with what you say about the longer eject time

No matter what i push i can't get past the folder with the Q mark, id i start up with alt pushed it does see my drive so i hope i can repair with the disk utility, this is the first time i have ever had an update mess up my system ever.boehoeee, i'm so not amused.

The only time I've come accross the folder with the ? mark, and couldn't get passed it was back in January. I called applecare and immediately they said it was a HD problem. Solution, replace the HD (which they did the same day in store)

Gmail problem?

Since installing 10.4.9 I have not been able to view my Gmail account - I just get a blank white screen (well, window) with the message "Done", when it obviously isn't.

I don't yet know whether it is a Google problem or an Apple problem or a me problem - any other experiences out there?

After the update iSync found my Ericsson Mobile Phone K800i. I previously had a plugin from feisar installed and hat to remove it first. After that iSync worked great.

It seems that the supported mobiles have been increased. Did anyone find a link with all new supported devices?

Took them long enough, most people only keep thier phones 12 months to 18 months in the UK.

Thank god though, it synches, woo hoo. :)

I'm having a problem with safari losing connections constantly. I can usually load a page 2/3 times but there will be a few errors on each page caused by lost network connections. I have no real way of knowing if it's 10.4.9 or my ISP right now, though I'll find out tomorrow what's happening. (ICMP packets from ping have no trouble getting through so maybe it's something weird with the ISP and http)

Edit: A restart of the computer/modem/airport seems to have solved the problem.

External Drives

Be sure to "eject" yout external HD's before you update. As this should keep you from having to deal with resetting icons/fixing permissions/drives not mounting/etc. etc.

I did this and it everything worked out fine for me. No external drive problems.

The only problem per say was that my wireless card didn't reconnect or even see my wireless network. Just a simple restart, of the router and Mac, and all was well.

Is it just me that hasn't got this in Software Update yet? All I'm offered is an Airport Extreme update on my Intel iMac on 10.4.8, no sign of 10.3.9 nor iPhoto.

Gmail

I had a issue loading gmail too. When I went to login the screen locked up and said done. Though i could see my information on the left side, i didn't see my emails. I just refreshed the screen and it cleared up. Right now I am logged into Gmail and no problems.

Macbook Pro C2D Bricked?

Well, it looks like I can't boot up my Mac after performing this update. After getting past the rEFIt screen, the boot process commences for about 5-8 seconds before it's interrupted by a "You need to restart your computer" kernel panic. I can boot into Debian fine and mount my Mac startup disk with no problems. There doesn't seem to be a panic.log file in /Library/Logs and no file in /var/log has been updated since the panic.

I'd like to try some magic with the recovery disk but it's at a different location right now. Weee.
