Mouse Gestures with iTunes after Update

Before the 10.5.8 update, my global Multiclutch gestures didn't work in iTunes, apparently because iTunes is Carbon. However, after this update, they do seem to work. I don't really get the significance of this change, but it's interesting at least.

I upgraded three Macs tonight:

Original Mac Pro

Early 2007 MacBook Pro

Mid 2007 iMac

All three upgrades went off without a hitch.

For those that have been commenting on showdowns when the Mac restarts; this is due to Spotlight indexing after the upgrade changes a lot of files. Just wait a few minutes and the slowdown disappears. Then it is quite "snappy." :D

Not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but if you've hacked your early 2008 MBP to have the four finger gestures this update either undoes those file changes or possibly kills it all together. I haven't tried to put them back in yet, but since I map four finger swipes down globally to expose I immediately noticed.

Fix for Entourage 2008/Exchange users

In this update is an unexpected fix for Entourage 2008/Exchange users switching between network adapters!

At work I switch between wireless and ethernet quite often. Ethernet is my primary fibre net connection, Airport is my unfiltered ADSL connection.

I have Airport prioritised so when i turn it on for ADSL, my general internet needs will switch over to it. However Entourage 2008 wants to also use this prioritised adapter and loses the connection to the exchange server which is on the wired network. Such a pain!

I've tested this with other machines and the 10.5.8 update definitely has resolved this issue for me. The Office 2008 SP2 update did not fix it. I doubt Apple made a specific fix for Entourage, maybe they made a change with how OS X handles the way applications use network adapters.

Everything went just except initially my logitech mouse drivers did not start up properly. It was not even visible in the Control Panel either when I checked. I did a search through Spotlight and found the preference pane.

I loaded it and it found my mouse right away. Since then it has been fine. A tiny little issue but nothing serious.

i suppose i've left it for ten minutes. i'll leave it for now and not touch it. what has me concerned is that it never gets to the point where it says preparing "x.x mb" or whatever. it just says 'preparing backup'. is that normal?

I had the same thing. Time Machine lost track where it was (and what it has done). So it has to inspect every backup that it has, and that can take a while.

I have a f/w 800 TM backup drive, and it was "preparing" the first backup after 10.5.8 for at least 25-30 minutes, and then a while to actually do the backup. IIRC it was 2.6GB for me as I installed the combo update. Have patience...:)

That is a lot to backup. Much more (1 GB) than with my incremental update.

They might have finally fixed that rotten wifi reception on aluminum macbooks and macbook pros... but I'll give it a few more days before I say that for sure.

That's really odd. Never had a single problem with my Mid-2009 MBP at all. I can walk outside, cross the street and sit in the park opposite and still have at least 40% signal strength. Maybe it's your WiFi setup / router / channel / interference?!

Yes, it gets reversed with every mayor Leopard update. But I'm used to it now. I'm still not sure what cache files I have to remove to get it to work though.

Wireless reception on the aluminium Intel mobile hardware is hit or miss in my experience. Maybe it's cosmic rays or the planets are lined up just right when it works.

I don't know what causes it. All that I do know is that one user will be just fine while the other can't get any sort of connection.

I was scared with the "Preparing Backup..." thing, thanks for letting me know it's normal, hehe. :)

Apart from that, all is normal here. Even the bug I have at the login screen, when it simply ignores my trackpad clicks and I have to keep clicking it many, many times until it recognizes the click (or use a mouse or the keyboard :p).

Battery life?

iv noticed a speed improvement. shutdown , boot up is faster

I'm seeing the above also. But I'm seeing an improvement in (reported) battery life. My battery indicator is (presently) 90% and reports 3:46 left. Never, ever had this on my Macbook before (2006 White 1.83 GHz Core Duo)

I'm going to see how long it takes to drain the battery down, but I will be VERY HAPPY if this turns out to be true.

Nope. Try it with a plastic Dell and you'll bet at 70% signal strength.

This is a known issue with all aluminum MacBooks. The strength is weak. That said, I think it had more to do with the Apple drivers and TCP/IP code, and it certainly seems fixed in this version.

I've tested with Dells, Lenovos, a PS3 and plastic mac books.

I just wanted to say a big Thank You to all of you that helped me earlier with my issue. You guys know who you are!

I greatly appreciate it. :) My iMac is working fine now.

I just successfully got done with the update. Upon restarting I immediately noticed a richer display on my 13" MBP, its no longer washed out. Blues are purple no more!

Grr. Update went fine on my iMac, maybe 6-8 minutes, the double-reboot, no problems.

My late-08 unibody MB, however, is a different story: got into the first reboot, and has been "running installer script" for about an hour, no movement on the wait bar. This seems like a really bad time to force restart, but what other option do i have?

i'm really regretting not having done a time machine immediately beforehand... stupid, stupid, stupid.

Good to hear! Sucks that you had to have the headache... at least Time Machine makes the whole restore process a little less painful...

Everything went fine with my MB - only one weird thing.
The update changed my desktop wallpaper.
I used to have one wallpaper set for the MB screen and one wallpaper set to the external 22" monitor. After the update, both screens show the external monitor's wallpaper.

Just weird,...

Screwed Up Display Resolution

I have an Acer 23" monitor attached to a unibody 12" Macbook that was working great, displaying in 1920x1080 in 10.5.7 through HDMI (HDMI to Mini Display Port adapter). Now after this update it booted into 1600x900 and the only 1920x1080 option says (interlaced) next to it and the screen is slightly shaky with it on (yes, b/c its interlacing).

What gives? I will probably just revert back to 10.5.7 if no one has any idea - can I just install the 10.5.7 update over the 10.5.8 I currently have on?

Thanks.

I believe that won't work because of version info and time stamps, so you probably can't revert by using the 10.5.7 installer.

NEW - MobileMe icon updated

I know it's not important, and we all saw this coming... But I like it when Apple follows through on something, and I was sick of the pink icon on my desktop.

Now I just wish Apple would realize that a lot of us have a finder app that freezes the desktop so icons cannot be moved/selected. (Maybe the rewrite for Snow Leopard will fix that).

Update 10.5.8

At first it took a long time to boot. Got little scared. But eventually it worked. Dont see anything changed. Waiting for my snow leopard
