Everything went great updating my MacBook. Noticed that iTunes no longer asks to "Allow Incoming Connections" every time it's loaded when the Firewall is set to "Set access for specific services and applications."

Working well here...

Installed the update to 10.4.11 and have noticed no difference. Exactly as it should be at this stage...

Telling one third of your user base to go F themselves is probably NOT a good idea in the worst economy in all of our lifetimes.

I'm not sure about the 1/3 part, but certainly if I had bought a new machine in the last 3 years that was no longer going to be supported by new operating system releases I would not be happy. I got 8 productive years out of one of my Windows desktops with only a RAM, HD and graphics upgrade after 4 years: so-called old and obsolete equipment can be kept going for a while.

As it happens it is unclear how well my GMA 950 will handle Snow Leopard, though I guess I'll find out...

Apple doesn't need to support PPC users? why should they it's old technology and will force people to upgrade hardware.

These tactics would/will be used regardless of the current economy.

actually, i think the lube icon sucks.

the pink one was much better because it doesn't blend with the folders, now I need to find a way to change it back to pink ... or black or red or something that stands out :(

My message is not too short.

Whats with all the warnings: [not on Apples 'safe' list]

Code:
Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/vpnd" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Warning: SUID file "usr/sbin/pppd" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Extensions/webdav_fs.kext/Contents/Resources/load_webdav" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources/DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.

I started installing from updater... it froze so I stopped, clicked start again and it picked up where it left off... Before restarting when it installed itself, about halfway through the harddive got noisy which is the first time since I had the machine. - what gives, so much problem with an update that apparently doesnt have much?

Peace

dAlen

Well, was searching some of these Warnings on the net and on Apples site saw how someone downloaded the standalone version of the update and it fixed their problem...

So I went and downloaded the standalone update Combo and it no longer shows any of the "Warnings", thankfully - but the typical permissions were still done. Didnt do it twice to see if its clear the second time, used to it would be, but with this new machine it does the same repairs each time.

Peace

They will still offer some support for PPC users. If history is any guide we can expect security updates for Leopard and probably Tiger for some time to come. Possibly even updates to iTunes or Safari.

It is sad that new features will not be added to the OS for PPC, but you're not left totally in the cold. However that machine is used now it can be used that way for a long time yet.

Black Screen Issue!

This morning I installed 10.5.8 on my Santa Rosa MBP (2.4 Ghz) after having made sure there were no weird issues with it (by reading this thread). However, after reboot the screen stays black. Not only the backlight is off, but also there is nothing on the screen (checked the screen in full sunlight).

I turned it off, took the battery out and unplugged the cord an turned it on to make sure it was really off, but that didn't help. Resetting PVRAM didn't help either.

I tried to boot the Leopard DVD (c key pressed) and it looks and sounds like the DVD boots properly, though still nothing on the screen.

Last week I installed rEFIt in order to boot Linux from an USB stick, not sure if that has something to do with the issue. One would still expect the screen to light up and the apple logo to show...

If the issue is related to rEFIt it might be that the Mac does not boot from HD, however you would expect it to be able to boot from DVD and that it would show the Boot screen (Grey screen with mac logo) properly. I do hear the bootup sound though...

So, now I am at the Apple store where they had a quick look and hooked my MBP up to an external monitor, no luck either. They only tried to boot it from harddisk, so I am going to find a friend with an external monitor to try to boot from DVD and see if that will show on the external monitor.

Anybody experiencing similar issues?

My wife's laptop was at "preparing" for about 20 - 30 mins. It's backing up now, 1.3Gb. Mine didn't take too long, not that long, but I wouldn't worry about it.

My MBA Rev.B took longer than usual "preparing" the wireless TM backup over my QNAP NAS (that was the first one after the 10.5.8 upgrade).....the backup went ok though.........

I just updated.

Everything seems fine so far... But i continue to have a huge number of wrong permissions...

My Macbook Rev. C 2.13 SSD installed the update without issue. Went pretty quick actually, but it was also the only update I had.

Bluetooth and wireless seem to be improved. BT mighty mouse and alu keyboard connect instantly now instead of having to wait 10-15 seconds. Wireless also seems to connect and begin working instantly as opposed to waiting 10 seconds. But I use a Belkin router, so that might have had something to do with the 10 second connection time before.

I don't notice an improvement in boot up or application launches, but that's probably because mine uses an SSD. A 10% increase on half a second for application launch isn't really going to be noticeable.

I can't believe I hadn't heard of that app before. Gonna give it a whirl.

Upon reboot:

1. MSN Messenger said wrong password, every time I retyped it still said it was wrong.
2. Mail hung.
3. Safari would not launch, just bounced then stopped.
4. Upon logging out it never made it to the login screen, appeared to keep cycling the bit when the background colour changes.

Had to AC power off in the end, on 2nd boot all seems OK.

Odd indeed.

Pre update my airport extreme 5ghz 802.11n connection was good for over 20MB/sec, now it won't do any better than about 500KB/sec and takes quite a while to establish a connection to that, or the dlink 802.11g unit. Guess I'm gonna have to do a reinstall of 10.5.0 and then d/l the combo update and install that. :(

I was so hoping the airport fixes would get it to actually reconnect properly when waking up and not telling me that the preferred networks weren't available then proceding to ask me to connect to those exact same networks as were in the preferred list.

It seems that my iMac lost wifi connectivity with my other devices that are still running 10.5.7. They show that connection is established, but nothing happens. Anyone got this problem?

Huh...I still get that prompt when loading iTunes, and my Firewall is set as you indicated...

something has definitely gone wrong

How is being insulting adding any more validity to your argument?

Btw, this isn't the worse economy all our life times - where I live we had unemployment of 11-12% during the 1980s, a public debt so bad in 1984 it almost bankrupted my country. What is being experienced now is pretty minor on the 100 year scale let alone the 2 decade scale.

These people who bought PowerPC machines knew full well that that they were buying a dead asset - they could have kept pushing their old machines going along until the Intel Mac Pro's came out but they chose not too.

They made their bed, now they have to sleep in it.

3 years isnt that long for any computer.

3 years is right on the line of having to be replaced.

If you bought a computer for NZ$1800, over three years it would be NZ$600 per year, which breaks down to $12 per week, which breaks down to around 2 coffee's per week, a meal at McDonalds or a return train ticket.

In other words, its hardly anything when compared to the garbage most people waste their money on.
