They might have finally fixed that rotten wifi reception on aluminum macbooks and macbook pros... but I'll give it a few more days before I say that for sure.

Unfortunately something went horribly wrong during the update process I would imagine. Some important file becoming corrupt or something...the only thing I can tell you is reinstall from the CD and do the combo update.

In other words, you recommend reformatting the C: drive?

I'd love to see this "Mac vs. PC" ad, where "Mac" says "yes, sometimes Macs need to reformat too. Stuff happens.".

I don't think that a minor software update can replace an aluminum casing with one that has an RF transparent port for the radio antennae.

Note that other companies manage OK - most metal cased Dell systems have a port - note the thin line near the close edge of this Dell - the top section of the lid is a gun-metal grey plastic that matches the rest of the metal lid, yet allows the radios to work.

Display resets to FULL BRIGHTNESS

After I installed 10.5.8 through software update, my screen resets to full brightness every time I restart. I have an iMac CD2 White Mid-2007. Anyone else having this issue right after the update?, I tried resetting the P-RAM but that doesn't work. Please help! :(

The real problem wasn't that it was slow - it would basically give up. The iphone is actually similar in that respect... It's like the signal is now constantly trying to connect and reconnect, whereas before it would simply lose a connection and then stop for 10 or 30 seconds.

I don't see why people think aluminum is such a great choice for a laptop casing. It dents easily and provides poor wifi connectivity.

It's sad that a cheap dell that costs 1/3rd as much gets better WIFI performance.

What do I look for in verbose mode? Im getting text on a black screen.

What is the last line of text that you see? Normally it will go through all sorts of text, then go to the login screen. The last item may (i emphasize may) tell us where your computer is hanging and what might be causing the problem...

It keeps repeating the same text. Its going so fast i cant read it.

So it just keeps going, and does not stop spitting out text at any point? That is certainly odd. Try taking a picture to see if you can read it, I guess. Not much else I can tell you :(

edit: do what Eidorian said. that might help. if not, you are more or less hosed. it sucks but you will probably have to reinstall...

Single user mode and read /var/log/system.log?

I have to agree that an Archive & Install or Time Machine restoration is in order.

So far I am delighted as this update seems to have fixed my wireless issue. Because I know that the wireless issue is a bit controversial, allow me a to provide a little background to qualify this post.

The wireless connection on my iMac would not work more than about 5 minutes without the connection becoming unusable.

I have 6 other computers, 2 cell phones, and 2 ipods that all work flawlessly on my wireless network. My iMac running OSX would not stay connected. The wireless connection on the same iMac using the same hardware running XP in bootcamp works brilliantly. After doing weeks of research I concluded that there were probably several different wireless "problems" that people encountered but I could not find a solution for my problem. Reference: Good summary

With this update my wireless on OSX now works! So, your wireless problem may not be my wireless problem, but give it a try - there is hope.

Just so you know, when I said this update, im talking about 10.5.8 which i installed 3 hours ago. As for apps, i dont have any dodgy apps. I dont have very many 3rd party apps.

Well, that told the forum nothing; what third party applications do you have installed? Do they use the 'Application Enhancer' Framework? If you want assistance - how about helping yourself by providing more details as to your systems configuration.

Ok so Im putting in the Install Disc. Nothing is happening! Ohmygod Im screwed more probably.

Are there any buttons I press when starting it up with disc in?

It's a definite improvement.

The issue with my iphone isn't on the WIFI, but it'll often show full bars and just sit there while trying to load a web page. If I hold down the two buttons and start the system reset, but hit cancel before it actually resets, the IP stack seems to reset and try to connect again.

Hooray. I've been waiting since 10.5.6, having decided to pass on 10.5.7.

One, 3 weeks after Leopard was released (and one day before 10.5.1 came out). That was the only numbered release Apple has made to an old version of OS X after the release of a newer version.

But you never know now with PPC support gone. Leopard might continue to see updates. Especially, I don't think everyone will be upgrading to Snow Leopard like with Leopard. I would have to say it will be 50% even with Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Try holding down the option button after the startup bong. That will allow you to select which disk to boot from. Select the "OSX install DVD" or something similar.

I've already noticed better memory management in this update. Also the structure of Applications updated such as Dock, Address Book etc. have taken on the structure of Snow Leopard, with _CodeSignature. We're nearly there...

1) Put in CD

2) Hold down option key when booting (make sure you're pressing it before the chime)

3) Select your cd and click on the arrow

4) Installation will start

Hold down Option while booting, as if you were going to boot into Windows. It should show the Apple logo, then an image of a HDD and a disc will appear. Click on the arrow under the disc.

While I agree with you point concerning PPC users, I disagree that not many people will upgrade. For $30, why wouldn't you upgrade, especially with the potential performance gains? I feel that the majority of people who won't upgrade are those that are unaware of SL...
